The kids invaded the mancave, so no painting of Graf Spee today. My frustration build will be this one. Still not sure whether to build a RC-5 or an A-5.

Fit and detail is stunningly good for a kit from 1989.

have i seen that box before? 😉

ah yes, the golden age of naval aviation. and the correct scale as well🙂

Welcome friends.
I intend to do the Buck Danny paintjob: google.nl/search?cli..imgrc=lLiEE9wYnoVTNM:

Okay. Finished the two Martin Baked them seats. Ingredients are two relatively bare seats, RLM70 for the frame, RAL6003 for the seat itself and RLM23 for the headrest. A 7B pencil provided the silver lining.

Very neat!

The greens are AMMO paints. Work fine in an airbrush, but with a regular brush there's a lot of layers necessary to get them to cover properly. I tried to use this to my advantage and simulate the creases on the seats with it.
Not my best work, but with the tiny canopy, no one will ever notice. 🙂

Again, I'm very impressed with the surface detail and fit of this kit.
4 May 2018, 09:05
Peter Hardy
Really Martin? I'm very impressed with the detail you are putting into this kit!

Gluefinger
Heck, what's taking you so long? When I built this kit 40 years ago, it was finished in an afternoon! And a week after that, it was blown to pieces by a firecracker! 😉
4 May 2018, 10:55
Martin Oostrom
Hey Gluey, back in the day it would have been an afternoon. But now I'm converted to the ways of the Prophet Kerry Cox and I have to do my utmost on this kit. 😄
Why the firecracker? You thought it could function as an afterburner?
5 May 2018, 16:45
Łukasz Gliński
Back from holidays and I see I missed a lot 😉 Will watch, the same kit is waiting in my stash

Been there, done that! Tried a skyrocket up the clacker of a Mig 15 40 years ago. Won't tell you the result, but my Mum gave me a sore bum!

@Martin Oostrom:
>> Why the firecracker? You thought it could function as an afterburner?
Back in the days, it was the classic way to finish a build. 😉 Actually, after a while, I mastered the art of piercing firecrackers in a way that would turn them into jet engines. This not only resulted in a few seconds of uncontrolled flight, but left a heap of burning and smouldering plastic which was a lot more fun than the bits and pieces left after a microsecond of explosive activity. Ah, happy days of pointless violence, and all without the loss of life or limb!

Okay, primed this one with mr surfacer 1200. Thinned with mr color. At first not a success. I got cobwebs along the edges which would have kept Frodo in Shelobs tunnel.
Added extra thinner which solved the problem. In the end the ratio was approximately 50/50.
Sprayed the leftover surfacer on the F-100 without problems.
14 May 2018, 16:40
Peter Hardy
Got the required surface Martin. Frodo wasn't worth getting out of the tunnel anyway. Love the name of this plane. Vigilante! Sounds dangerous and a thing to avoid!
14 May 2018, 20:59
Martin Oostrom
Vigilante, Dementor. It's evil and it's coming your way!
Lode, you made me chuckle. Sonny would prefer something like my P-38, don't you think?

Martin Oostrom
Painted the exhausts with Alclad. Started with black gloss primer, then an overall layer of aluminium, dark aluminium at the rim and then a mist of jet exhaust. What do you guys think?
20 May 2018, 15:44
Peter Hardy
I think you have too much time on your hands. Is this four or five concurrent builds?
20 May 2018, 20:59
Martin Oostrom
Let me think. 1 Graf Spee 2 Vigilante 3 F-100. That makes an even 6!

Hind started and put back in box, Indy started with my son, Stranraer is in the cursed corner.

Okay guys, I need some help/advice. The legs of this girl should be kept hidden beneath a long skirt. I'd like to make this a post-crash dio, just as in the comic book. I need to make some foam like this: google.nl/search?q=i..imgrc=rZmTRSDRFgkJBM
I was thinking about cutting some styrofoam to shape, paint it a blueish off-white, and then add some Vallejo water on top for the transparent touch.
Any suggestions on how to do this much better/easier?
21 May 2018, 08:10
Spanjaard
cool idea... you could take some thick fiber glass or so, to make the "arches" and then cover them with something (mix of white and transparent), thin in the begin, thick at the end..... but i have never done anything even close to these

Didn't check the fit of the canopy well enough. Jusr spent an hour cutting off 3mm of the back end and then sanding everything at the right angles. But it's done and the canopy seems to fit rather well now.

seems quite good fit now.

Found some time to preshade this rather large plane. Because she will be light gull grey with white, I chose for a tan preshading as I think black would be too harsh.

Looking good so far. Good sized bird for 1:72.

Well done so far, Martin. Following!

Brown's better than black. But it gives a dirty look through the white. I think a (dark) grey would have been better. Lesson learned.
30 June 2018, 07:19
Martin Oostrom
Seagull grey sprayed. This bird is dirty 😛

you seem to have the us navy grey/white scheme well in hand. perhaps you should continue with an early Tomcat?🙂

Martin, this one is in the stash since father's day: scalemates.com/kits/1117736-..4a-tomcat-vf-84-jolly-rogers

You can with all of them... You can be Super Martin!!! :-P

Lovely results so far!

Martin Oostrom
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It's Super Martin, going down in flames!
Icarus I am not.

At this rate all three could be finished at the same time. I have my fill of the corrugated Devastator, it's too hot to toy with an enamel panel line wash for the Sabre, so it's back to this one.

Martin Oostrom
Okay, put the decals on last night. The idea was to get her as close to Buck Danny's XF-13 as possible, so there are some deviations from the instructions.
Radar dome is black, not ochre. Top of flaps is gull grey, not white. Tail is plain grey, with the exeption of part of the leading edge, which is red. No squadron numbers or plane type references.
To get some variation from the grey on the wings, I kept the 603 decals.

Lode, as the instigator of this XF-13 build, is it close enough for you? 😉

Looking great Martin. What's that black stuff in pic 30?

Lode, I'd love to take that ride! 😄
Urban is right Alec: scalemates.com/kits/268737-mxpression-mxa001-panzer-putty Flexible, low tack, works as a flexible mask.

Nice to see such an granpa of a kit again on a desk! Years ago, i purchsed mine with a bag full of pennys. The seller was not very amused... 😉

I have fond youth memories of this one too. My first attempt at thinning paint. A tin of white Revell paint and some drops of water from the faucet. Man, was my learning curve steep back then!... 😄
5 March 2019, 14:56
Holger Kranich
Patrick - And i thought, the thicker the layer of Revell paint is, the better it sticks. 😄😄
5 March 2019, 15:36
Martin Oostrom
Thanks my Mates.
Patrick, let me guess: thinning enamel with water equals big mess?
5 March 2019, 15:44
Patrick Hagelstein
Well, at least I had a non-slip surface all over the model. Even on the underside, while hanging upside down, the crew wouldn't slip off. 😉
5 March 2019, 18:49
John Thomas
Very nice work
6 March 2019, 01:25

@Patrick... you are describing the paintjob of my Tomcat 30 years ago.... it had so much white Testors paint, that it is difficult to know if the detail is engraved or raised 😄 😄

Spanjaard
very nice Martin, by the way 🙂

Regarding thick paint: maybe we used to think that putty and paint could be combined in a single product? 😉 D)
6 March 2019, 13:13
Spanjaard
noooo! at that time, i simply used paint AS putty 😄 😄
6 March 2019, 14:53
Patrick Hagelstein
Well, actually I used old thickened paint on a 1/72 Marder 1A3 to replicate weld beads on the turret and it worked! 🙂

>> maybe we used to think that putty and paint could be combined in a single product
That product is called "Mr. Surfacer".

As my man cave is invaded by my son and his friends for some computer games (yeah, vacation), I can't paint my Graf Spee 🙁
