Buffalo progress

Album image #1
Cockpit is finished with Eduard PE.

Album image #2
Album image #3
Album image #4
Engine detail in kit is actually really good.

Album image #5
Landing light reflector made with milliput. Following in David Dameks footsteps 😉

Album image #6
A little detailing in the wheel well added, also following David Damek's video.

Album image #7
All puttied up and waiting for sanding.

Album image #8
All the small parts are painted and the canopy is attached. As this canopy is a single piece, I've decided to leave it un-glued when the model is finished, so I can take it off and look into the cockpit. At the moment it is glued with micro crystal clear.

Album image #9
The Montex mask for the canopy is applied.

Album image #10
In the instruction, it says to paint the underside for this paint scheme and not have the window, but I chose to mask it anyway, as I like the look of it.

Album image #11
An experiment with pre-shading with both black and white.

Album image #12
The basic camoflage is finished. Just a few reparations to be made before starting to mask and paint the markings.

Album image #13
I like this split camo for the underside. It is not visible in the picture, but the black is XF-69 (Nato Black) sprayed over the pre-shading so there is a bit of definition to it. I will work more on that in the weathering stage to make it less uniform.

Album image #14
Masking for the walkways on the wings.

Album image #15
I used Tamiya XF-1 for this.

Album image #16
Masking for the roundelles on the top of the wings.

Album image #17
I painted Tamiya XF-7 for the red.

Album image #18
For the blue I mixed Tamiya XF-8 with XF-1 to get a dark blue color.

Album image #19
Masking for the roundelles on the bottom of the wings.

Album image #20
I used Tamiya XF-3 for the yellow. The bottom layer is Tamiya XF-2.

Album image #21
The blue has been sprayed and masking for the red center point.

Album image #22
A misalignment between the masks that has to be fixed.

Album image #23
The alignment is better on this side.

Album image #24
Masking for the stripe around the fuselage.

Album image #25
THe best color match I found for the color of the stripe was Tamiya XF-71.

Album image #26
Masking for the insignia on the vertical tail plane.

Album image #27
Again the base is Tamiya XF-2.

Album image #28
Album image #29
Album image #30
A bit of leakage in the mask, but the panel liner will take care of it.

Album image #31
Masking for the roundelles on the fuselage.

Album image #32
Album image #33
Album image #34
Masking the squadron markings.

Album image #35
I used Tamiya XF-66 for the lettering. Also masking for the plane identification tag.

Album image #36
Tamiya XF-1 was used for the identification lettering.

Album image #37
Album image #38
Album image #39
The only decals I will use will be the Lizards on the sides of the fuselage.

Album image #40
The Buffalo is finished! 🙂

Album image #41
I used 0.03 mm AMMO of mig Rigging line for the rigging.

Album image #42
Album image #43
Album image #44
Album image #45
Album image #46
Album image #47
Album image #48
I used 1 mm styrene rod that I drilled for all of the machine guns.

Album image #49
I scratch built the mirror holder from some spare photo etch and used tin foil for the mirror.

I've started the build of the Buffalo. As David Damek (PLASMO-plastic models) has made a build video of this plane on YouTube, I have followed along and made some of the additions from his video on my model.

Cool, following! What markings will it be in?

Another update, the base camoflage is now finished. As I have the Montex Maxi Mask set for the plane, I have decided to paint all the markings also, so that is the next step.

I've spent all day, masking and painting all the insignias and markings. It was fun, but I'm pretty happy that it is over with 🙂.

Thanks bobinspokaloo! 🙂
My name is a swedish secret😉 The easiest way is probably the copy-paste method, that's what I usually do when I can't find the letters on the keyboard or if someone has a loooong name😉.

Looking very good Bjorn! I really like the barrel like look of the Buffalo and the fact that the Dutch also flew them in the East Indies helps.....Yours is looking splendid

The painted markings look better than decals. Haven't seen that done before.

Quick question, which fonts did you use for the markings? I need to make my own for a buffalo project too
23 December 2018, 09:41
Björn Svedberg
Thanks mates! I'm happy that you like it! 🙂
@Wim, I used the masks that came with the Montex-kit. Finding the right font is always a problem, sorry I can't shed any light on that.
23 December 2018, 12:22
Wim van der Luijt
Hey no worries....the right font will pop up somewhere

So the Buffalo soldier is finished, finally! 🙂 I even did the rigging this time😉, and I scratch built the mirror holder from some spare photo etch.

Congratulations, very nice work Björn. I like your Buffalo.

Since I remember Saburo Sakai's rendewous with Buffalos over Surabaja, I like the obsolete plane.

Thanks Stephan! 🙂
It's actually an old build (from December), I just replaced a few pictures that had been corrupted in the build log.

But it's still nice😉
