Blue Thunder (WIP)
Fit is... bad
Fit really is a issue...
Extreme sanding
Finally, the cushions fit the chairs
Seats varnished and ready for detailing of the seatbelts and oils
Cockpit varnished
Cockpit almost done
Scratchbuilding a fire extinguisher
Scratchbuilding a fire extinguisher
Fit is a nightmare!!!
Even the simplest parts don’t fit
AK Primer applied to check for defects - quite a few corrections to do... 🙁
🙁
First layer of Gunze H326 (Blue FS15044)
Two colors applied
Engine exhaust painted with AK 480 Dark Aluminum over Gunze H2 (black)
Some subtle oils were applied on the upper parts to add some weathering
Some subtle color on the exhaust
Painting the red stripes... later I'll find out this red is much stronger than the weak red of the decals... I think I'll leave it as it is, I like to contrast with the strong yellow
Decals applied
Test fit of the canopy - not perfect, but I confess I expected it to be worse
Due to the extreme sanding, some correction will be needed in the front
Using canopy as a jig, some Milliput was inserted in the front and then covered with Liquid Green Stuff from Citadel (iPhone camera focus is on the wrong spot, sorry)
All masking removed from the interior and canopy is ready to go
Last look before closing
Canopy closed with Micro Kristal Klear
Warzone... 🙁
Some priming with AK Primer and Microfiller
Oils applied on the upper surfaces, for a subtle faded look
Here we go...

Ricardo - I will follow with interest if I may? It is an old model, so be kind to it (it won't be the best fit, as you appear to have found). I have a 1:32 Monogram release deep in my stash somewhere, and still have a built 1:72 scratch conversion, based on an Airfix Gazelle, I made just after the film was released back in 1983! Have fun! 🙂

Thank you guys. To be honest, although as a child I watched (and loved) the series, it would not be a subject of choice. However, a friend of mine asked me to build it, as a favour. My only problem so far is that the instructions are in korean and I haven't figured out a way for translator, in my mobile phone, to let mw see which colors to use. As such, I'm looking at a Monogram build here on Scalemates as a guide.

Ricardo - My Monogram model is in DEEP stash, otherwise I would put the instructions up on this site for your reference right now. The build by Jorge Ortiz is very good, and pretty much spot on with the colours - I would say IMHO it is probably a better guide than a very old-style set of instructions! Good luck! 👍

Heh cool 😄 Airwolf's little brother. Or the result of a Gazelle getting humped by a Decepticon 😄 Could never make my mind up 😄

I remember building this kit as a young teenager, I loved it. You're making a great job of it so far.

Blue Thunder is a big favorite of mine, yours looks great! (And Playtime 222... Blue thunder is the big brother of Airwolf, it came first but of course Airwolf became much more popular)

Yes, I loved it too. I've watched it a few times lately on Youtube and the opening theme still rings the bells of memory in my chest. 🙂

Looking good Ricardo. 👍 Do the decals include the very small white lettering 'GH-17A' between the tail-code (25102) and the red tail stripe? (Sorry, I have gone into 'rivet-counting' mode!).

Hi Derek. The decals do not include the "GH-17A" letters. They include the red tail stripe, but its red is very dark, so I sprayed it over with red (Tamiya X-7) and then toned it down with the diluted blue used in the rest of the body.

I remeber the movie and series. Still watch it when I can find it online. Looking good! Can't wait to see it complete.

Yes, it's a nightmare. I never imagined a kit could be this bad. Maybe the original Monogram is better...

Thanks mates. Almost finsihed now - the lack of quality of the kit shows in the results... some of my lack of skills or patiente also show... fortunately in the photos these are not so obvious; anyhow, expect to finish it by tomorrow, I'll post better photos by then.
