Type 89B Medium tank, Luzon, Philippine Islands, Dec 1941. The Type 89 was the first Japanese medium tank design/development in 1929 and was in service by 1932. The 89B model came into service in 1936 and was the Worlds first Diesel powered tank. By 1930 standards, the Type 89 was a rather impressive medium tank, but by the late 1930's it was to be replaced by the Tpye 97 Chi Ha. Japanese tank production, however, never delivered sufficient numbers of tanks for various reasons (raw materials shortages, low priority over other weapons, etc) and the Type 89 could be found in service throughout WWII.
