They were still in service for the first couple of years of my time in the RAF. remember seeing them at airshows. They had quite the reputation and were quirky designs to say the least. To start them, they used a highly explosive liquid starting fuel. It was also said that there was a height restriction for lightning pilots due to the cockpit screen frame presenting a danger of amputating legs at the knees for pilots over 6 foot tall ejecting.
