Skip Ziegler was a Curtiss test pilot that raced the last of three XP-40Q's made at the 1947 races. He didn't qualify fast enough to make the race, but started as an alternate when one of the F2G Corsairs didn't start.
On the 14th lap the Allison engine blew, Ziegler bailed out breaking his leg and the plane crashed into a Cleveland rail-road yard.
