1/350 USS NAUTILUS SS-168 Makin Island Raider
The castings are very primitive compared to 21st Century casting tech. If this Submarine didn't have a pivotal role at Midway, I probably would have treated this kit like Plutonium.
Very rough, going to remove a lot of the BS(Bird Snot) looking details and replace with styrene and or brass.
This Pig Boat is a putty queen.
Keel stabilizers getting the treatment
First attempt with styrene did not work out as planned. Going to try brass sheet later.
Sorting out the bow upper torpedo tubes
Anchors aweigh!!!
It was probably around here I decided to use the Nuclear option on dealing with the crappy deck details
The resin was very brittle and was broken in a few places that I removed and tried to salvage, but it just was working out for me.
Started laminating sheets of styrene .010, now the deck detail will have something positive to glue to.
Not to shabby so far
Looking at replacing the upperdeck section as well, the Conning tower / Sail maybe I'll keep that, we'll see.
Started scribing the deck
Didn't take too long
The last elements have to have more preplanning needed to get the angles correct so they match up Starboard and Port.
Getting the forward superstructure elements in place
