"Tiger "Ausf. E (Trumpeter, 1:35) <- from 3rd company of 505 Heavy Tank Battalion, Poland, June-July 1944.
Works on construction of Tiger I tank began in 1937. The first heavy tank designs were prepared by Daimler-Benz, MAN and Henschel. Porsche became involved in this project only at the end of 1939. Ultimately, the Panther tank was constructed according to the design of Henschel and MAN, and competing concepts were developed based on the designs of Porsche and Henschl.
The Porsche and Henschel designs competed with each other, but from the beginning Dr. Porsche's design was favored by many decision-making instances including Hitler.
By order of Hitler on February 27, 1944 the Panzerkampfwagen VI was renamed the Tiger Ausf. E.
The Tiger was a well armed and well armored tank, but its weight of 56 tons put extreme strain on the suspension, drivetrain and power transmission systems. Tigers were more often destroyed by the German military for lack of fuel or spare parts than in combat with Allied tanks. However, this does not mean that they were indestructible. The Allies learned that their tanks could handle Tigers, but it required more skill and cunning than dueling with another tank. Though they certainly preferred to call for air support first. ?
