P-40E "Kibosh"
Comments
Really nice John! Great research and great job bringing it to life. Nice decals you made and I love the blue patches.
Album info
This aircraft represents the P-40E of Lt. Ed Dyess, commander of the 21st Pursuit Squadron. "Kibosh" was reportedly the last flyable P-40 in the Philippines in 1942. I stumbled across a profile of this plane in Janowicz' Curtiss P-40 Vol II and became interested in the aircraft. During the build I read "The Dyess Story" on my Kindle. It's a fascinating read.
"When the crew finished with old Kibosh the plane was olive drab and the external patches were bright blue. There were sixty-five or seventy of them. You could hardly see Kibosh for the patches."
-The Dyess Story
Lt. Dyess subsequently escaped captivity and returned to the United States. After a brief recuperation, newly promoted Lt. Col. Dyess died tragically when the P-38 he was flying caught fire and crashed.
Apparently, there are no known photographs of Kibosh. Therefore, some artistic license was used. This was a fun little build. I made a few mistakes here and there and it's not as clean as I'd like but I think it's an interesting subject.
