Phantastic result in 24 hours, Mike! Do you print decals yourself for the wooden finish?
20 February 2017, 21:03
Mike Grant
Thanks guys! @bughunter The wood finish is painted using Vallejo acrylics, thinned with their Glaze Medium. I used a hair-dryer to speed drying time.

Really good looking. Did you replace the canopy?
21 February 2017, 00:15
Mike Grant
Thanks guys! @KollHBM Yes, the kit canopy was a horrible fit so the replacement is a piece of clear packing tape. Unfortunately the shiny finish repelled the acrylic paint while I was painting the framework, it really needs re-painting.

Thanks again for the nice comments 👍

On the one hand, it's an ideal kit for a quick build- there are only 7 parts to the plane, including canopy, joystick and seat. On the other, it needs a lot of refining: all of the trailing edges were thinned, the pebbly surface texture sanded/polished off, all lines re-scribed, sidewall detail/instrument panel/bulkhead and new seat added in the cockpit. After painting the canopy was also replaced. I could have spent much longer on it, and the handling trolley, if I'd had more time. But, that's part of the challenge/fun 🙂 (I'd definitely build another, without a deadline this time.)

Very good and clean job mate! Well done! I also made this kit and I know how tricky this is.. It needs you to contribute adding some extras to production process and forces you to find ideas to cover up its flaws. For example I added rivets by means of punching at the edges of the panels, used electrician tape to fulfill the gap between the canopy and the fuselage etc. But when you finish your job, you achieve some sort of special feeling that, this kit belongs to you different than other ready to make faultless products somehow! I won a third prize in a modelling contest with this one in ''what if'' category btw.. 🙂

Album info

Built as part of the Unofficial Airfix Tribute Forum's 'Blitzbau' – build a model in a day. It's the PM kit: quite crude, few parts and pebbly plastic. Originally I'd planned to build it wheels up, in flight, but I couldn't get the pilot to fit and with so little time, opted to leave him out and go with the kit-supplied trolley. Obviously, with more time I could have spent more time on bodywork and adding detail, but part of the challenge is deciding where to compromise in order to meet the deadline.

I borrowed the scheme from someone's online build of the 1/48 Mauve kit.The aircraft never made it to prototype stage, so any scheme is spurious.
