Nigel Chapman
Hi I have just bought a transit kit. How do you intend to build it ?
6 June 2019, 20:16
Munkyslut
Hiya Nigel, I was planning to do a mild late 70's custom, smooth the shell a little, no bumpers, big n little mag wheels, custom interior & bucket seats, sidepipes, spoilers etc. Not sure on a colour tho.....
6 June 2019, 21:18
Nigel Chapman
Cool I was considering something similar myself but more 80'S. So far I have a pair of resin Recaro's and a resin Rover V8 and maybe a day van type interior.
7 June 2019, 09:02
Munkyslut
Rover block would be great, they have a fixed bonnet so any engine mods would only be visible from the underside.
A day van interior sounds good, plenty of shag & cocktail cabinets!
7 June 2019, 10:12
Munkyslut
Are you thinking more 80's with paint? Like more modern graphics rather than old skool?
I was going for flake & pearls but still not sure on colours......
7 June 2019, 10:15
Nigel Chapman
Opening the bonnet would look different as well as show off the engine.
A 70's paint job would look fine - How about the Dirty Donny decals from the Chevy van kit ?
For my van I'm thinking a plain colour with tiger stripes (remember them ? every Ford had them) or going pastel shades and daft graphics (80's / 90's pro street).
There is a resto mod Transit in all the magazines at the moment - Stock body with AMG V6 running gear, lowered all round on slot mags.
7 June 2019, 17:27
Munkyslut
Little bit of progress........ front spoiler fitted & now trial fitting various wheel & tyre combo's, I think this Goodyear tyre & chrome slot mag look pretty good.
Tyres were nicely moulded but had a mould line that needed shaving off, a new plastic razor does the job perfect!
Also I painted the grille with a chrome pen, I think it's better than matte black.
30 June 2019, 11:02
Nigel Chapman
Like the wheels. Where did you get them ?
30 June 2019, 21:03
Munkyslut
They came in that Japanese manufactured 73 Challenger Rallye box in the background. I needed Magnums for it that Bill kindly sent me over from the States.
30 June 2019, 21:08
Nigel Chapman
What suspension set up are you going to use ?
2 July 2019, 21:53
Munkyslut
I've used a Mopar 8 & 3/4" axle out back that I'm gonna paint red & maybe put a soft LED over it just like back in the day.
Up front is the stock Ford dropped beam axle painted with a chrome pen cos it looks like nickel, all the 70's Gassers & rods used those Transit front axles.
Keep it period 😉
2 July 2019, 22:04
Nigel Chapman
Sounds good. I remember the lit up rear axle, they always seemed to be painted red.
What sort of chrome pen do you use ? I've always tended to use bare metal foil.
2 July 2019, 22:10
Munkyslut
I just ordered off eBay Nigel, I can't remember where they came from but the brand is Molotow Liquid Chrome.
www.molotow.com
I originally got it in different sizes to repair the worn out chrome on my vintage Hot Wheels Sizzlers but found it so good I use it for almost every chrome or bright trim, & to be honest I just don't have the patience &/or skill to use BMF properly.
2 July 2019, 22:45
Nigel Chapman
Thanks. I've never heard of Molotow, will check them out
2 July 2019, 23:59
Chris Greathouse
Does this van come with a "free candy" sign? 😛
3 July 2019, 02:07
Munkyslut
Haribo only 😉
3 July 2019, 08:12
Nigel Chapman
Checked out Molotow - Amazing range of markers and spray paints. Will definitely be giving them a try. Reasonably priced too
3 July 2019, 22:19
Munkyslut
Glad you found em useful Nigel, I'll post up their website on the newsfeed for everyone to see.
3 July 2019, 22:37
Nigel Chapman
Had another rethink about my Transit. I am getting a damaged Tamiya 1998 Subaru Impreza kit this week off Ebay and was considering grafting the front and rear wings onto my van. In theory this would give me a wider wheel base and I could go for something a bit like the x-pack body kits used on MK2 Escorts and MK2/3 Capri's
9 July 2019, 16:37
Munkyslut
That'd be very cool Nigel, I like it 😉
I did consider IMSA style boxed arches cos I could scratch build out of flat pieces easily but just went for a protruding tyre in the end.
9 July 2019, 16:41
Nigel Chapman
Showing my age here but I think Steve Stringer did something like that, I recall seeing pictures in a magazine. I suppose I could go the Ford Supervan way.
9 July 2019, 16:55
Munkyslut
I remember Stringer! We all fat too old now.......
9 July 2019, 17:28
Munkyslut
Original supervan was coolest, just fat 15" slicks hanging right out at all 4 corners
9 July 2019, 17:29
Munkyslut
Eventually had time from work & looking after me poor old mum to start on the floor pan of the Tranny.
I had ideas of painting the axle red like we used to for real back in the day.
But then I really didn't want a spotless underneath to what would've once been a working van before the imaginary late 70's customisers got their hands on it.
So, flat black brushed on to look like thick underseal, then the exhaust & fuel tank distressed with a coat of zinc enamel with blacks & greys dry brushed over the top.
I'm happy with the fuel tank & how the majority of dirt & staining are at the leading edges, not so happy with the exhaust tho, might do that again.

Just had an attempt at weathering after a quick read of Nigel's posted articles.
I thought well just dive in, enjoy ya self & see what comes out, it's pretty good if I say so myself.
Plus I can see it improving with every step & there's no pressure to get it right either, if I proper fk it up then I can just go back over it again & again.
I'm going to introduce some different colours & see where it goes! Thanks for the inspiration Nigel, that really spurred me on to do better 😉
22 July 2019, 13:27
Dominik Weitzer
Hmmmm....if you planed a custom, why is the undercarrige so dirty?
22 July 2019, 14:31
Munkyslut
Good point Dominik! I thought it would be an old school late 70's maybe early 80's street van, not a full on show circuit custom.
So probably one that had been used for some sort of trades, plumber, decorator etc, hence the grubby underside.
Driven regularly on the streets of England covered in spilled diesel & cow shit 😉
22 July 2019, 14:42
Anton
Oh hell yes, this is my jam! Great work!
22 July 2019, 17:22
Nigel Chapman
Looks good so far all you need is a grubby topside
22 July 2019, 20:24
Munkyslut
Thanks Anton & Nigel! I really enjoyed it
22 July 2019, 20:29
Nigel Chapman
It might be a bit late but check out motobitz.uk - They produce resin conversion parts for the Ford Transit - LWB chassis and van panels, doors, rear light and even a tipper body.
Best of all they do front and rear independent suspension - I'm inspired for my van now !
4 August 2019, 21:16
Munkyslut
Why did you show me that??? You know I now must look at it, buy it, and change ALL my plans LOL!
4 August 2019, 21:54
Munkyslut
Website is very good, some amazing wheel sets
4 August 2019, 22:17
Munkyslut
Finally got a chance to lay about in the sun & get back in to this one, got a nice coat of primer on the shell, doors, tailgate & cabin floor.
Also had a little go at doing the dashboard but I am hopeless at small details so I'll leave that till later.....
29 August 2019, 10:24
Munkyslut
Tricky with fingers of a gorilla but I managed to trim the rear floor and wheelhouses with some excellent fabric that looks like velvet.
I'm pleased with the results 😉
8 September 2019, 11:44
Nathan Dempsey
Great idea. Looks good 🙂
8 September 2019, 12:33
Nigel Chapman
ditto
8 September 2019, 16:22
Chris Greathouse
The fabric looks great mate!
8 September 2019, 17:30
Chaz Gordon
Having spent too many hours underneath the real thing, that undercarriage looks pretty realistic, Gearboxes usually have a shiny aluminium spot right wherever the oil is seeping out of it.
23 September 2019, 23:06
Munkyslut
Thanks Chaz! If you want to see realism then check out Nigel Chapmans weathered van pics 😉
24 September 2019, 17:17
P J
Looks great! How long to completion?
4 October 2019, 11:56
Munkyslut
Result! Been waiting for these AMT flame decals to finish off the Transits paint job.
I'm going to use the Gold & White set from the bottom left, I'll cut them out first & lay them on the shell & gauge how to place them.
25 April 2020, 09:43
Chaz Gordon
Yay, this build is in transit again.
25 April 2020, 11:21
Chaz Gordon
Sorry, couldn't resist
25 April 2020, 11:21
Munkyslut
Forgiven 😉
25 April 2020, 11:42
Nigel Chapman
Where did you get the decals?
25 April 2020, 19:09
Munkyslut
Off eBay mate, I'll pm u the details 👍
25 April 2020, 19:34
Munkyslut
Eventually I got time to have a play with some different colours cos I wasn't really taken with the white pearl.
So I flatted it & shot some Tamiya Red Pearlescent metallic over it & I got a sort of pearlescent lilac......
I actually quite like it, the pic don't do it justice, very sparkly & a proper pearlescent flash to it.
I've got some blue & purple flame decals going on later today.
It's 34c in Buckinghamshire today so it's dry in record time!
31 July 2020, 14:25
Nigel Chapman
Nice one Munky, that colour is sweet and a good combo with the wheels
31 July 2020, 18:00
Munkyslut
Cheers Nigel 😉
Here it is with some decals
31 July 2020, 18:42
Chaz Gordon
Reminds me of "That Colour" that used to be a regular sight on a Mk4 Escort Convertible.
But I think the Van is better as there's lots more space for the Floor Standing hairdrier😉
Nice Work MS.
31 July 2020, 19:24
Munkyslut
Yeah I remember that tarts boudoir colour Chaz!
All the best Sharons drove round in one of them 😄
This isn't like that thankfully, but I can't get a decent pic to convey the pearlescence & metallic sparkle.
31 July 2020, 19:59
Nigel Chapman
Looking good. All you need are some furry dice, the green sun strip with the names and those rubber strip things that were supposed to 'earth' your car.
1 August 2020, 01:25
Munkyslut
Ahhh but it's fully Kustom mate so it'll have a chrome chain hanging down from the rear valance 😄
1 August 2020, 09:29
Nigel Chapman
How tasteful. Side pipes ?
1 August 2020, 14:38
Munkyslut
Do you know what??? I was just thinking of fabbing some out of chrome sprue!
1 August 2020, 16:11
Nigel Chapman
A pair of fake Lake pipes would do the job. I've just got the Jo-Han 1963 Plymouth Fury that comes with scavenger pipes (never heard of them), they would look good on your van
1 August 2020, 18:51
Munkyslut
Yeah good call, Lake's would suit it good👍
Scavenging is something I'd expect to see in a two strokes expansion chambers, sounds good tho dunnit?
1 August 2020, 18:59
Nigel Chapman
Apparently they were a 'straight through' end tail pipe rather than bent over the rear axle. popular in the 1950's & 60's.
1 August 2020, 19:57
Munkyslut
What you reckon Nigel? Just fabbed em out of some chrome sprue......... bit of sanding & some Molotow chrome & I think they'll be ok.
2 August 2020, 12:17
Nigel Chapman
Dude I'm impressed. Is that really only sprue?
2 August 2020, 14:26
Munkyslut
Yeah just bent in hot water ........the thinner ends are from this kit & the fatter 'tubes' are from the 1/8 Revell BMW R75. Not bad eh? I was mildly impressed meself!
2 August 2020, 14:30
Nigel Chapman
Way to go. What's next ?
2 August 2020, 18:03
Munkyslut
Carpet the walls & roof of the cabin & cargo space with the same mink I used on the floor, that looked good.
I need to find something I can make captains chairs out of then start on the sofa bed, cocktail cabinet & tv/stereo.
2 August 2020, 18:52
Chaz Gordon
A couple of spare recaros from a car kit on a simple scratch base, and some arm rests filed out of a fat sprue would work
2 August 2020, 20:36
Munkyslut
Good call Chaz 😉
2 August 2020, 21:23
Munkyslut
Eventually got around to tackling the interior upholstery on the tarts boudoir.
Made a pattern for the flock fabric I used on the floor for the side walls & the roof, also the tailgate.
Just trimmed it carefully & glued it in with pva.
Cut some hearts out of soft wood to make floor seating & wall furnishings, painted them pink, stuck some hearts on from the local hobby store, looks suitably 70's love hippy culture 😉
5 September 2020, 10:19
Nigel Chapman
Looks more like 1970's risqué adult movie to me !
5 September 2020, 12:22
Munkyslut
If the vans a rockin don't go knockin 😄
5 September 2020, 13:07
Munkyslut
Just finished the swivelling bucket seats, also installed the dash & front screen, trimmed the door cards & hung the doors & tailgate.
6 September 2020, 17:46
Nathan Dempsey
Wow Munky, that plush interior is sweeeeeet. 🙂
6 September 2020, 18:01
Nigel Chapman
That looks brilliant. Just imagine the amount shake n vac you'd need.
6 September 2020, 19:56
Munkyslut
Cheers lads 😄
7 September 2020, 12:32
Dominik Weitzer
styllish 80s 😄
7 September 2020, 13:15

7 September 2020, 20:56
Munkyslut
Nigel...... Shake'n'Vac 😄
7 September 2020, 20:57
Nigel Chapman
How about some furry seat belts?
8 September 2020, 11:04
Phil M
nice one!!!
12 September 2020, 11:02
Munkyslut
Finally got the van to where I want it to be, still not finished the soft furnishings for the interior but I can work on that.
Also not sure wether to detail the door handles & windscreen trim black or chrome?
Got the slotmags on & installed the sidepipes, painted, chromed & installed the lights, mirrors & grille.
Quite happy with it!
24 September 2020, 16:14
Nigel Chapman
Looks very effective. The colour is just right.

Yes Dominik, I'd decided that as soon as I posed the question, just too lazy to do it!
I'll wait for the decals to set over the weekend & do it👍

Munkyslut
Thanks Christian, couple of tiny detail touches & it's done 👍
28 September 2020, 08:52
Bill Newcomer
Way cool van. I have a Chevy I would like to do 70's style called the "Love Box" Want to have wheels where the holes are in the shape of little hearts. It will have interior with a bed and privacy curtains. I'll make a decal that says "If the van is rockin' don't come a knockin'!"
28 September 2020, 22:06
Munkyslut
Wow that's a cool plan Bill!
Can you put up an ideas post with some pics?
28 September 2020, 22:29
Christian W
@Bill - sweet decal idea😉
29 September 2020, 07:14
Bill Newcomer
Thanks for the feedback. However, that project is WAY DOWN the queue so far it is not even on the list yet.

How many rock bands owe their tours and groupie 'interactions' to the back of a Trannie?.....

I once had a white Boxer dog called Ajax, she lived to 15.

Don't know how I missed the finally on this. Actually, now that I think about it I've been a building machine to cope with the stress in my life this year. I never would have pictured this out come from the beginning stages! This came out awesome!
