Unboxed all parts and some of the parts have a kind of gold metallic flakes in the plastic....
first time I see this lol

Bozzer
I'm in!

Danny Meer
👍 welcome to the show....truck build 😛
26 November 2020, 18:38
Nigel Chapman
The real truck comes from Italy. Are you building it out the box ?
26 November 2020, 19:35
Martin Oostrom
If the gold flake looks good enough, can't you just clear coat it?
26 November 2020, 20:17
Danny Meer
@Nigel yes, gonna be an OOB build 🙂
@Martin was thinking the same, try to polish the plastic parts and only clear coat cuz it does look kinda cool with the gold flakes in it.
27 November 2020, 08:00
Danny Meer
@Martin, to bad....It's only the parts on the right sprue and the left sprue all "normal" black plastic.
So will paint all parts but not sure what's best to use as primer for the metallic black paint, should I use white or grey primer?
27 November 2020, 12:39
Nigel Chapman
Are you using rattle cans ? Then the label will tell you what primer to use
27 November 2020, 14:14
Bozzer
I was thinking about a primer of gold Danny? I've never heard of anyone doing it before, so I might give it a try on an old kit, and see how it comes out?
28 November 2020, 04:42
Martin Oostrom
If not exactly a primer, paint it gold first and then mist on the metallic black
28 November 2020, 08:15
Danny Meer
@Nigel with metallic paint I always use cans, works best for me 🙂
And Bozzer and Martin, nice tip. Think I will use that flip flop oriental sun that I still have (hope it's enough)
And then a light coat of black metallic and pray it works 😛

I have a question about the steering, part 83 goes into part 84 but when I glue this, it can't steer. when I don't glue it, part 83 will fall out part 84.....what am I missing here?
30 November 2020, 09:31
Martin Oostrom
It looks like 83 will be kept in place when you glue 84 to the chassis?
30 November 2020, 10:43
Danny Meer
I checked that Martin but there is to much room so it can fall out..now placed some extra plates behind it and won't fall out. But it has some poor steering angle to the left...
And the fan and radiator are the next challenge atm. Maybe just gluebomb the whole front end lol

But first I will put some primer on chassis and engine and see
Really don't like to build the chassis of trucks lol
30 November 2020, 11:13
Nigel Chapman
Danny, there used to a magazine called Truck Model World dedicated to Trucks and heavy machinery in all scales. You might be able to find some old build articles or try Kit Form Services- they produce high quality resin and photo-etch parts and have tips and advice on various trucks.

Did someone say trucks? Watching this one!
30 November 2020, 15:51
Danny Meer
Thx for the tip Nigel 👍
Don't expect to much from my builds Brandon 😛 my builds cannot compete with your work lol I'm just happy to have something to do during cold and wet days 😄

Got 2 layers of primer on the engine and 2 layers of primer on chassis and 1 layer of flip flop paint, today I will get the black metallic paint in mail

Looking forward to seeing the black paint Danny. I've just picked up several of the Alclad II Candy range. It's a tricky paint to use, you have to handle your parts with cotton gloves on, for both the base coat and top coat. Only when you clear coat it, can you handle the part. But, they have some amazing colours, which you'll see in the near future

Danny Meer
Hope it works out with the paint Bozz, looking forward to some pictures of your build 🙂
Used chrome on some parts of my engine but not sure if I keep it like this or give it some more color

Danny Meer
Really don't know how some of you can do those little detail so perfect...
Tried to do the Scania letters with a toothpick and goldpaint but still hard to do 😛
2 December 2020, 18:11
Martin Oostrom
It is, isn't it?
You can always sharpen the tip of the toothpick with your knife. Slow and steady is the trick. It helps to steady both hands on your desk.

Brandon H
Danny, I've had some luck before with painting the color for the raised detail first, then slopping the base color right overtop of it before sanding it away to reveal the lettering. I'm also wondering if a real thin, dark wash over everything might crisp up details like that by settling at the edges of the letters - I might try it on some upcoming parts.
2 December 2020, 18:19
Danny Meer
There's my problem Martin...the steady hands 😛 not easy with rheumatism and high humidty 😄
And that was my problem Brandon, thought of doing the gold letters after painting the engine 😛
I hope that it works with a thin dark wash for you, then I can try it aswell in the future when needed 🙂
2 December 2020, 18:48
Bozzer
Looks bloody good to me Danny! I respect your problems with Rheumatism. I was born with it. As a kid, it ruined my early years. The pain was horrible! Luckily, I managed to grow out of it, but I still remember the experience! Thankfully, it's never returned! However, I bet you make a cracking Vodka/Martini? Lol, that's just me joking 😛 For the letters, I'd try Brandon's idea. It's something that I do, with my dashboards. Just try not to flood the area with paint.

Working on some tools and 2 truckers 🙂
How many wrenches can you put on a 5 eurocent? Alot! 😄
7 December 2020, 16:38
Martin Oostrom
Nice shiny tools. Must be a new set 😉
7 December 2020, 16:43
Danny Meer
lol indeed, fresh out of the toolbox 😛
7 December 2020, 16:43
Nigel Chapman
Will you have a tool box ?
7 December 2020, 17:31
Danny Meer
I'm still not sure what to do, scratchbuild a toolbox/car or try to buy 1..
My scratchbuilding isn't that great 😛
8 December 2020, 08:30
Martin Oostrom
You've got some examples in the Unimog

So tiny! As if it weren't easy enough already to lose exactly the wrench you need right this minute....
8 December 2020, 13:55
Nigel Chapman
That would drive me nuts
8 December 2020, 16:46
Danny Meer
Gonna need a bigger table to build both at same time lol... 😄

Question for the truckies: Is a single drive axle realistic with such a six-axle trailer? Asking for a friend
9 December 2020, 13:20
Danny Meer
I was wondering the same 😛 or should I use those 6 axle trailers on other trucks...
Was first thinking of using the heavy gravel on the alaskan truck and the 2 other 6 axle trailers not decided yet, maybe 1 behind the heavy haulage scania
9 December 2020, 13:29
Danny Meer
Think with the V8 and if there are no major mountains/hills to climb it could work 😛

Danny Meer
First time for painting a trucker and not sure about the face...used revell 10 for base, what kind of color do I need for highlighting cheeks, forehead and maybe chin? a kind of soft pink?
clothing i did with 2 diff blue colors, shoes brown and underside black...still need to do shirt eyes and mouth
9 December 2020, 16:45
Martin Oostrom
For highlights you can use the same colour, with a touch of off-white. Add more off-white to create even more lighter shades. Use shades (add white or black in tiny amounts), not different colours. Lines in faces can be done with a brownish colour.

Thank you for the tips Martin 👍 much appreciated 🙂

👍 😄

I'm sure a single drive is realistic enough for a lot of trucks. I'm not as familiar with how trucks are spec'd in Europe, but over here, my company sells countless combinations of power ratings, transmissions, and final drive ratios and configurations. All depends on the exact duty cycle that the truck will see.

Found a vid on yt with a Dutch Daf XF single drive axle 🙂

In the UK, trucks are based on axle / gross weight: 4 x 2 tractor unit with 2 x axle trailer is up to 38 tons, 4 x 2 with 3 axle trailer up to 40 tons and 3 axle tractor unit with 3 axle trailer up to 44 tons.
I know in The Netherlands, they run multi axle container trailers at round 50 - 60 tons (I think). In Scandinavia they can run even higher. In Italy they use specialised trucks for hauling marble etc... at higher weights with multi axles either rigid or artic.
Not sure if this helps or hinders but food for thought.

Single axle and duel axle trucks, in Europe, are mainly influenced by the roads and loads. Our USA counterparts, tend to have long straight roads, but need long range. Australia, aim for long times away from destination and civilization. Hence why the massive difference between them all. When it comes to hauling, that's another cup of tea! A single axle can easily do our crappy, tight English roads, but a duel axle could easily do the same. In Germany, they'd go for dual, but Italy, they'd go for single axle. As with anything, it's down to the market. Roads definitely make the difference, when buying new stock. My question is though.. Why do America make grade crossings, to a height, that trucks get stuck? Surely it makes sense to keep them level? That's why in England, we call them 'Level Crossings' ???

Hey Danny, just catching up on this build. I'm kinda doing mine, in-between doing everything else. I too found the steering box issue. I've got my chassis built, and I've got my cab, almost ready for paint. The interior is done and fitted. Any updates on your build brother?
