Is it too late to drill out the holes for the cannons?
Seems like an easy improvement. If you do, trick is to first center the point, and using a pointy sharp blade is ok, but expect the tip to break if you are a little rough. Then you can use a smaller drill bit to make a basic hole, then increase the diameter. The important part is to center the hole ofc. I find that a small hand held drill tool/handle is very nice, as an electrical drill might end up deforming the circular entry hole if one isn't careful.

Treehugger, I'm not yet at such level of craftmanship. If the cannons were not glued in place, I'd try. But as is, the danger of ruining the model it would be considerable, since it would be my first attempt of this kind. I have zero previous experience in using mini-drills on models.
