The Battlefield - The Black Knight of Berlin (part 1)
What a Sweet looking box... I mean Platz!
Quite a bit on the sprue for a 1/144 scale kit, no?
Another lovely box. I really like the red bottom... too bad it's not part of this build.
Another lovely set of highly detailed sprues.
The Mustang kit goes together nicely, even with a small DC motor standing in for the engine.
Same goes for the Fw190. Fits like a glove!
Almost ready for take off. I decided to leave the resistors outside the fuselage. Not that much room to work with, but I can hide them easily in the base.
This will be in flight, so no need for landing gear.
Pilot ready for takeoff!
The Fw190 is a bit trickier with the half-open wheel covers. I needed to file down the wheels to fit properly.
This is a black knight... but we need a white undercoat first!
The homemade decals can't add the white, so the undercoat will solve that problem... now for some very careful masking! The metal finish of the Mustang is much easier to deal with.
I only masked the white part and as little of the black outline as necessary. Hopefully this will blend the paint coat and the decal nicely.
Mustang masked up for the invasion stripes. Fw190 painted black.
Not bad. Only a TINY bit of overspray on the Mustang...
The rest of the decals applied... some homemade, some from the kit. Looking good if I do say so myself. The base is a wooden coaster with a homemade decal, it's a technique I've used for my Area 88 1/144 projects and I like the look.
Almost had a disaster when the motors were hooked up. One of the 4 Mustang propellor blades was not properly glued in and I launched it across the room when the motor started spinning. Luckily a clean up and grid search allowed me to find the missing piece. Whew!
A bit of cotton smoke for effect... and a check of the spinning props... and I'm done!

This one has been kicking around for a bit, but I decided to buckle down and start moving things off the shelf of doom. This project is based on the "Battlefield" (aka "the Cockpit") manga series by Leiji Matsumoto. It's in two parts. in the first part, the so-called Black Knight of Berlin shows chivalrous mercy to his opponents… and gets his Fw190 shot down by a P-51 Mustang for his trouble. In part two he gets in a jet black Me262 and shoots down the B-17 he first showed mercy to.
Likely the trickiest part of this project will be getting white homemade decals on a black Fw190.

I always love adding the decals. It's amazing how much better they make a model look. Now to find some propellors...

Got the two planes mounted on the base, so mainly just a bit of wiring to do now. Almost had to deal with a disaster on the Mustang though. The four prop blades are glued into a 2-part nose. One of them wasn't properly secured in place, so when I connected the dc motor it flung one of the blades into orbit. I had to tear apart my monkey business room to try and locate a single 1/144 scale propellor blade. Luckily after a massive clean up and grid search effort… I found it next to the fish tank. 😉 Phew!

Haha! Thanks for that Matthew!
Just to prove that the props actually spin...
Youtube Video
You can even tell I got the prop spinning the right way because of the wind on the smoke cloud! 😉

I've also updated my blog with this project... if anyone is interested in reading the Leiji Matsumoto chapter from "The Cockpit" that this project is based on - strobez.ca/wp/index...-part-1-the-cockpit/

Album info
When the Black Knight of Berlin's code of honour is used against him and his Focke-Wulf Fw190 is shot down by a P-51 Mustang, he comes back with a vengeance in a new Messerschmitt Me262 and shoots down the American Boeing B-17 Bomber he had at first only disabled.
