Formed on 15 July 1940 at Fort Benning, Georgia around the Provisional Tank Brigade. Training conducted 1941-1942 before landing 2 Light tank Battalions on French Morocco on 8 November 1942. The Division then undertook landings at Sicily, Italy on 10 July 1943. Mid June 1944 saw the Division deployed to Normandy along with the 3rd AD to drive South to St Lo and breakout of the hedgerows
during Operation Cobra. August and September 1944 saw the Division advance across France and Belgium the the German Border where terrain, weather, and strong German defenses created a stalemate. The German Ardennes offensive in December 1944 moved the 2nd AD south to attack the North shoulder of the Bulge and fought to push the Germans back to their border. The final phase of the war in Europe saw the division cross the Rhine and take part in the Ruhr Pocket battles and then driving East to the Elbe River to conclude the War.
