The 33rd Armoured Brigade was initially established, as the 33rd Army Tank Brigade, an independent tank brigade in August 1941. In June 1942 it was renamed the 33rd Tank Brigade, attached to the 3rd Infantry Division. In April 1943, the brigade was detached from 3rd Infantry and resumed as an independent tank Brigade. throughout most of this time the brigade had trained on Churchill Tanks in an infantry support role, but it was converted to Shermans in the Spring of 1944 and accordingly was renamed the 33rd Armoured Brigade.
The Brigade landed on Gold Beach on D-Day and was involved in the battles to take Caen and then fought on toward Falaise. After the Normandy Campaign, the brigade converted to Buffalo amtracks and fell under command of the 79th Armored Division.
