S-300 PMU
NATO: SA-10c Grumble C
Operator: 11th Air and Air Defense Forces Army PVO
Location: Eastern Military District (Russia)
Timeframe: 1993-94
Personal interest:
This model represents the 30N6 target engagement radar (NATO Flap Lid) and the 5P85S and 5P85D transporter erector launchers of a Russian S-300PMU complex. The S-300PMU variant was introduced in 1985 as a long-range mobile surface-to-air missile system, and many were in operation in the Russian Eastern Military District during my Alaskan service with the US Air Force. Although the 56-mile maximum range was significantly shorter than the S-200, the S-300 has maneuverable and extremely high-speed missiles, making it a lethal threat to every type of aircraft in the US inventory.
