Operator: Iraqi Army
Location: Iraqi Southern No-Fly Zone
Timeframe: 1996
Personal interest:
Prior to Operation Desert Storm, Iraq was known to have over 9000 Anti-Aircraft Artillery guns of multiple types throughout Iraq. Many of these guns were towed along with maneuvering Army units. Many were fixed in place around high value targets throughout the country to provide density of coverage along with SAM systems. Although Iraq had lots of AAA, most of them had to operate autonomously. Operators were guided by voice command over radio or by simple observation. Despite being fired upon many times, no Operation Southern Watch aircraft were downed by Iraqi AAA.
