Some tips you can use to improve the faces: don't use black paint there but tone that down with brown and red colors. I always use a brown-red wash to get some shadow, this is really easy to apply and gets some life in the flesh color. Try some dry-brushing on the clothing with a lighter tone of green, this will also bring more depth
22 October 2024, 09:20

I would but i only have black wash and with the black i wanted to represent the horrors of war, that no matter which side your on you suffer and that only the dead see the end of the war. Soldiers go, corpses come back
22 October 2024, 10:07

I also don't have red wash, I make that from red paint. If you have red and black, take a drop of both and mix wit 75 per cent thinner (with acrylics that's just water) and just throw it on with a brush. At first they will seem all reddish, but it will dry transparent. Only if they look natural, start your horrors of war experiment adding some grey stains, maybe a very thinned wash around the eyes.

My stalled first attempt at building a Wingnut Wings kit showed me that I still needed to develop a lot of skills that I would need to successfully complete one of these. Since then I have built a few other biplane kits to try to develop these skills so maybe I should get back to this one sometime soon.

My oldest shelf queen. She has been languishing for nearly 30 years. She has survived South Africa's heat and two address changes. I hope that all the parts are still here, as well as being able to do justice to this gem.
24 October 2023, 17:33

The partially assembled engine block and supercharger was found. Using bleach I am stripping the paint before detailing and priming the sub-assemblies. So far so good.
27 October 2023, 06:38

Gorby: You are welcome.
Yeon Sung Jung: 이 모델을 제작하는 것이 좋습니다. 또한 1975년에 생산된 이 모델을 손에 넣을 수 있었던 것은 매우 행운이었습니다.
This project was started before the introduction of Tamiya Extra Thin Cement. I seem to have used a combination of Tamiya Cement and Super glue. I have been busy checking what is in the box and assess what I have done. I cleaned the parts from dust, assessed damage, paint parts with a primer, removing chrome, fill ejector pin marks, do some repair work and try to determine if there are parts lost. So far, the only part missing is the backing for the back seat. There has also been close to no damage.
This kit is part of the Connoisseurs' Series, which mean that the kit has the potential to be motorised. The kit comes with two sets of instructions: 1) One set for the Connoisseurs' Series, and 2) The standard kit. The only difference that I could identify is that the Connoisseurs allows for inserting gears to accommodate an electric motor. I will not be installing a motor nor the gears.
Fortunately, there are many reference photographs. I do not plan to do a lot of scratch building. What my skills allow and to enhance the exterior of the model. My research indicate that the coachwork/ body was a wood frame covered in green leather.
My plan is to: 1) Start with the chassis, including painting and detailed painting; 2) Engine, drivetrain; 3) Fuel tank and exhaust; 4) Body, firewall, interior; 5) Nose; 6) Wheels.
14 November 2023, 21:34

Thank you Yeon Sung Jung for the compliment.
The search for an accurate colour match is under way. Two objectives: 1) A highly gloss for the chassis, mudguards and fuel tank, and; 2) A similar colour that will show minuscule differences between the metal surface and the leather surface.
16 November 2023, 14:02

You are welcome David.
Humbrol 003 Brunswick Green represents the real colour best. I am very satisfied how the Humbrol paints are laying down.
16 November 2023, 17:26

Yea, folks knock humbrol enamels (rightly so for the pricing) but just spend three minutes mixing the stuff and do it well. Some of my 1990s batch are still very good when thoroughly stirred up. (WEM also). Still dislike acrylics.
Watching as usual with awe...
20 November 2023, 16:55

Thank you mates for visiting and your kind comments.
I am not an expert on paint. I use a variety of manufacturers and is very much still in the experimental phase. That being said, there is a lot of nostalgia in using the little tins on a British classic. 🙂
28 November 2023, 06:06

A lot of time was spent on finding the desired colours, contemplating levels of detailing and stripping back paint just to be painted again. Despite the kit's age and shortcomings, I thoroughly enjoy the model.
7 December 2023, 04:06

Definitely enjoying your paint selection process, and very cool that you're getting around to building it after so many years. Excited to see how it turns out!

Michael. I am also happy to eventually working on the Bentley. It has been 30 years languishing in an open box. 🙂
15 December 2023, 07:49

As a child, about 45 years ago, I built that big Bentley, but after 4 times changing the houses it is gone. Luckily I found my tiny little 1:32 Bentley I built this year after 23 years of absence. But now I will lean back and enjoy the building of the/your big Bentley while watching your work 😄 Thanks
Btw.: All that is left from my childhood is the instruction book.

I am wishing to each and everyone all the best for 2024.

This really looks excellent, and it's more impressive having sat unfinished in the box for so long! Very much looking forward to seeing the end result...
11 January 2024, 21:31

Love how you step us through your method of madness in restoring the details! Looking forward to seeing this gem all done up after the long wait on the shelf! 😀
19 February 2024, 15:41

Good work V. I believe it was the first British car to be built using metric measurements, but I could be wrong
4 March 2024, 21:19

Love the old Airfix Bentley. I built my father's kit last year after it had languished in a closet for nearly 50 years. Unfortunately the tyres had been left loos in the box and melted a few parts, mainly on the engine valve cover and the gearbox, but I was able to rebuild them. I used SMS British Racing Green for the shiny parts of the body. I think it looks similar to the colour you used. I used BRG mixed with Schwarzgrun and a bit of white for the passenger compartment and a BRG/white mix for the leather. You are a braver man than me stripping all that detail off the fuel tank. It's looking good though.
9 May 2024, 01:07

Hope you are able to finish this one. One of my all time favorite cars and looking at your other projects there's no doubt it will turn out amazing 👍
5 December 2024, 05:23

Indeed a beautiful subject. This model has been sucking the energy out of me. There is still some wiring issues as well as a scratch build cradle for the brake lights to do. I am nearly finished with the 1936 Mercedes 540K Maharaja Sport Roadster and hope to have the Bentley across the finishing line before January 2025!

Thanks Boozer. But I think I will build my Unimog first before building this truck. So I won't run out of kits. I always wanted to buy the recovery truck and convert it to a German one, simply changing the cab to a Mercedes Benz Actros or MAN TGM.
1 10 February, 07:55

I also got that kit recently! Looking forward to your modifications. My one will be probably just out of the box
1 11 February, 18:59

I seem to remember KFS used to offer a off-road conversion kit for MAN trucks. I'm pretty sure it at least included the bumper which might be hard to scratch build if you can't print it. Can't find the kit anymore tho
2 28 February, 11:11

I searched on the internet for this kit but I couldn't find it either. We will see how this trick turns out
28 February, 12:25

Just realized the bumper out of the box is accurate for offroad already since it's a 4x4, and the same as in your pictures. I had started working on a similar project but with the older MAN TGA kit from Revell as a basis and that required heavy modifications all around. I'm glad you're moving towards more custom projects because they are a lot of fun to get into, and watch other people get into...
1 1 March, 15:25

Nice stocking up and scratch building... Should be a very interesting build.
Actually, I never saw this concept of fire truck with a rear lift and wheeled equipment carts. Can see the benefits of this when a lot of equipment needed to be moved fast (at least until hitting the first step...).
1 6 March, 17:59

Thanks Goldman. There is another reason why these trucks make sense: You can carry different stuff which is normally loaded by special vehicles. So you don't need different vehicles just this one and the equipment carts and you are ready for nearly everything
7 March, 07:04

The headlights guard looks very good to me. Did you use plastic or metal rods? I don't think you can get any thinner with plastic
1 17 March, 05:10

Thank you Goldman! I used cables. I bended them to the right shape. The outer and inner parts are from the same cable just with and without isolation
1 17 March, 06:14

The tires looks great. Much better than those in the kit. Well worth the investment
20 March, 20:25

I have had some success printing thin parts for the kind of headlight detail you are working on. They are very fragile and I've never tried painting them but I think there's a lot of potential for this kind of application. I uploaded a picture here: FDM 3D Printer experiments | Album by Ecko
21 March, 11:25

Currently I don't have a 3D printer but I think of buying a resin printer for such purposes. It would help me a lot with scratch building. Lets see wat the future brings
1 21 March, 11:50

Just make sure that you are aware of potential hazards that come along with resin printing.
1 21 March, 20:45

Yes handling resin and post processing it takes a lot of extra work to do properly. And space too. I can't do it at home because I live in a flat with my cat and I have found a filament 3d printer can unlock many possibilities to enhance scratch builds without the hassle and hazards of resin.
21 March, 21:28

I've gotta admit, I had fun with my entry level filament printer, but I now own 3 resin printers too, and they're never turned off. Yes, they do have to be taken care of, especially with regards to the resin, but it's worth it.
At this point I'd better add, all mine are in my purpose built mancave, however I did run them in the house kitchen, for a while.
Each one has it's own personality, kinda like a cat or a car? But once you hone into it, you can create almost anything? The details are immense and your own imagination, is your limit!
I've literally just printed a 1/14 truck, with all the bells and whistles, and I'm happy with the results. It's taken me around 2 weeks, but I did use 6 bottles of High Speed Resin, which without, probably would've taken me another 3-4 weeks?
For you guys in the know, Standard resin prints at roughly 4 layers a minute. High Speed Resin is around 12 layers a minute.
My love for the printers, is because I can print models, that we can't buy?
I love scratchbuilding, but now I can flick my finger and the cab, hood and sleeper are printing, while I'm building the chassis? It's definitely been a game changer in my life, without a doubt.
You definitely need to be aware of the dangers though. Plenty of ventilation, gloves, mask and goggles. I also have mini air purifiers in each printer, and heaters.
And whatever you do, don't smoke near the 99% alcohol!
And most importantly, don't drink it!
2 25 March, 17:26

Thank you Bozzer for your information and opinion. I will see what the future brings and if it's time to by a printer, I will definitely research and inform myself about it a little more and maybe come back to you guys, because you know the terms of 3D printers definitely better than I.
And don't worry, I do not smoke or drink alcohol. So this won't be a problem 🙂
1 25 March, 18:22

The front section looks great. Are you planning to completely scratch building the rear section?
3 May, 08:12

Thank you. Not everything. The tailgate is from Italeri and I will use a few of the parts from the HLF for the equipment compartments
3 May, 09:58

Excellent quality. 10+ surplus track parts per side as reserve for a total of only two defect links encountered.
Ready for assembly, no clean-up required. Perfect fit. It takes about 2 hours to assemble per track.
No sprocket wheel included, but fit well over Dragon kit sprocket wheels. Remain flexible after thin coats of primer and base color.

I agree with my mates above: Great job.
One detail: Israel buys the D9 and adds the armour later on. So the basic Caterpillar will have the yellow-orange Caterpillar base color, while the armoured cabin will not.

Do not be alarmed! The pictures look really brutal. 🙂 This spin-off of the N1K1 construction is at a stage where heavy covering with "Maskol" should provide a lively IJN-green surface. The construction so far is documented in the second N1.K1- gallery, where I will show the further construction steps up to the finished N1K1 in US markings.

Das freut mich Jürgen. Werde bald Bilder der fertig lackierten N1K1 zeigen können- die Decals sind jedenfalls seit gestern aufgebracht.
That´s very nice to hear, Jürgen. I will soon be able to show pictures of the paint-finished N1K1, the decals have been applied since yesterday.
10 January 2023, 09:07

The construction of the Japanese N1K1 has now taken a few significant steps forward: the surfaces are now finished, and the not so small amount of details will now be completed or attached.
12 January 2023, 19:11

Very nice 👍 I have a soft spot for late-war Japanese types. They are often not very elegant like a Mustang but they look really cool.

This N1K1 George is now also finished, this time in the original colours of this machine. Against the background of its place of operation - the Philippines - the picture background with the lush and mountainous landscape fits quite well.
All in all, the two models were a relatively quick and really enjoyable, entertaining modelling adventure!

Oh ya!
Built a couple of Broplan vac kits, a real challenge but great for the feeling of overcoming a challenge and creative accomplishment
11 July 2024, 23:27

OMG, what a challenge! 🙂 Those panel lines look quite uneven, will you try to rescribe them or just take them for what they are? In any way, I am super curious how these sheets of plastic can be turned into a model, so I will watch with interest!
12 July 2024, 02:31

Welcome mates, the panellines are aweful but the material is so thin, i'm scarred that i cut right trough it when i try to rescribe them.
1 12 July 2024, 06:24

Following. Got my first vacu kit this weekend. I hope I can learn something here.
16 July 2024, 14:48

Hi DuperScale, I built a couple of Broplan vac ATR kits, converting one 72 500 to a 42 300. A few pics of the work in my "albums" if you're interested in the kind of model you can achieve from a Broplan kit with a bit of work…sweat and tears, foul language, alcohol and time….
1 16 July 2024, 23:24

DuperScale, how about scribing into a layer of primer paint?
This way, scribing should be a lot easier afaik, scribing into the primer layer of paing, and not plastic.
This guy on youtube did this, on regular plastic models though.
1 20 August 2024, 05:21

As for the clear parts, I wonder if it could be done this way
1) Cut out a square/rectangle shape, removing the oval form from windows. The larger the hole the better, to create some extra space around the old window shape. Enough space to work with putty later on.
2) Glue in a flat thin strip of transparent styrene on inside of model.
3) Glue in a square/rectangle shape transparent styrene, outside the model, laminated with the existing strip of transparent styrene on inside, so double layered.
If keeping the new window parts larger than the old window shape it should be easier to use some putty after adding masking tape that have the shape of the old windows. The larger these new outer square/rectangle window shapes are, the easier it is to add putty to create a smooth surface, then hopefully the center part is clear enough, to mask off the final shape of the old window shape, before painting.
Afaik a common issue using Mikro Kristal Klear is that you can't sand the clear part afterwards, because the clear part is like rubber iirc. You can iirc easily remove this clear part though, just poke/pull it out. Unsure if there would be any residue left after removing the rubber like liquid clear stuff after it dries.
1 20 August 2024, 05:25

Another thing one could do with clear parts an idea:
1) Glue in a long strip of transparent styrene on inside of plane.
2) Add some kind of epoxy or something that can be sanded, without the epoxy damaging the underlying transparent styrene.
3) Idea is to use the liquid stuff to fill in the perfectly shaped holes for the windows, then sand the liquid stuff flush after it dries.
What won't work imo, is doing multiple rounds of adding liquids to create some goo that goes transparent. I think if you sand this stuff multiple times adding more liquid stuff, you get a flawed result I think. I tried something like that with gloss varnish, trying to build up a solid clear shape. Did not work as expected.
1 20 August 2024, 05:35

In this thread, and in photo #13, the guy apparently put tape outside, and poured clear resin on the inside to fill the window holes. Unsure if such resin will react and maybe eat up or warp any thin parts ala vacuum kits. I guess this can be tested with some scrap plastic if having some piece left over.

1 20 August 2024, 07:35

The UV transparent resin is usually sandable (to some degree), maybe that might help?
Similarly to Treehugger I'd reinforce it with a transparent styrene from the inside of the fuselage anyway.
Or you might leave the windows open and fill them with Kristal Klear after painting - this is what I did on my Jetstream, Avanti & Yak-40. But if you want to seal it with gloss varnish, remember to keep very thin layers (guess how I learned it 🙂).

Hi, thanks for the input mates. I'm quite happy with the kristal clear on the small windows and i think i do it like Lukasz said. After everything is done i do the windows as the last step.
The windscreen window could work but i think i used little to much of the kristal clear.

So tell us what you really feel about Vaccuform! Don't hold back on us...
1 13 April, 13:29

I'm done, from this point it's just getting worse… 🤪 my opinion, for that price (over 50€) it is really not worth it… the amount of headache you get with a kit like that you can build 10 normal kits. The lack of detail and wrong shapes is so massiv, it's stupid i paid that price 😂
24 April, 20:28

High price? No details? Pain in the a***? Hey, this is the holy grail of modelling. Just bought my first vacu-kit. Ask me again after I build it. 😉

Of course the transparencies would look better on a Tamiya kit, but hey that's not what vacu is about! 😉

Excellent build of a difficult kit. I've never been brave enough to tackle a vacu kit so far. The closest I got was cutting a vacu canopy to fit on a build and I found that a challenge! 👍

I think you did a great work with the kit, pushing through the challenges! Hat's off👏🏼
Vacu tends to be a real pain in some stages of the builds. Nevertheless it's a good way to challenge yourself and develop your modelling skills
As some wise fellow modeller said: "Why buy a Tamiya instead of vacu when you can have great fun, rip your hair, spend hours on dry fitting, putty, sanding & rescribing, question your choice of kit during the build…" 😉😅
1 25 April, 15:39

Great job! Many of us couldn't have done it better. Plus, you now have an exclusive model in your display case 😉
Congrats!
1 25 April, 19:32

This is a fantastic effort. There are sooo many pitfalls associated with vac kits. Your efforts look great so far!!!
1 25 April, 21:23

Great result. 👍
Now you can say: "Now some easy kit from Amodel or Mach 2 for relaxation." 😛

Beautiful done jerrycans! Nice and very fine inscriptions. Expensive, but way better than the kit ones. Only bugger is: in the two sets I have only two of twelve cans have the wing nut undamaged! There is no protecting cage printed over those very delicate details… 😕

Hmm. I realize now I should have painted the deck first. It's my first ship.
30 September 2024, 01:03

Good grief this kit is older than me. I thought it was just dinosaurs which are older than me. 😄
Interested to see what you can do with it.
14 December 2024, 09:38

And people actually crossed oceans in these oversized bathtubs
14 December 2024, 12:14

Yeah this kit is one of the oldest I've built. Still, going to try to make it look good.
14 December 2024, 14:46

It looks quite toy like, but it is a cool subject.
Will follow this 👀
1 14 December 2024, 15:14

I'm excited, this looks to be a bigger project. Do you know how many pieces there are?
4 January, 22:18

Major colors now blocked out. Need to do next round of masking and painting after the blue dries.
1 19 April, 18:14

Painted after masking and did some detail painting. Will have to mask and paint the hull two more times I think.
1 21 April, 01:55

I was thinking of doing some sort of rigging on this but it's really small and fragile and primitive, so I think I'll call it done. First ship I've built in a long while.
3 May, 03:26

This kit is older than I am! Are you sure it isn't made of Bakelite? 😄
Nice work on such a tiny old kit Ben.

Nice work! To get a smooth finish with green stuff, you can use a tiny bit of vaseline. It makes it easier to flatten and doesn't stick to your shaping tools anymore.
1 18 April, 09:25

Thanks mate! It's been a long time since I used it to sculpt Steel Legion gloves onto Cadian models, so thanks for the reminder! Must keep that in mind next time a fat but brittle sprue connection wants to dork me and destroy my parts...

Oh no, I leave the site for a few days and attract onlookers! 🤣….will post some shots soon…the detail's good so far for 72nd….

I guess the observer may need some massage treatments on his back and neck after each mission🥹🥹🥹 following
1 11 February, 02:28

@Lorraine, yes - these planes weren't built for comfort….champagne for every successful mission return though?….
1 11 February, 23:12

I think one of the worst RAF planes for relative combat losses to number flown? Slow and defensively weak. I never built this as a kid, so intrigued by this offering!
12 February, 20:48

Andy, despite this, it will look great in the display case 😉
Nice interiors 👍
1 13 February, 19:30

Let me find a chair for this one. I don't know if helps any but I find in a pitch painted tamiya masking tape works well for seat belts.
1 17 March, 05:02

Good evening Villiers, Dave and Nicolas…
Dave I admire your comment on seat belts but one has to keep the global wine industry going with a foil capped harness…photos to come!
3 19 March, 23:41

Thanks Nicolas and others, just put some more progress shots on this project. The fit is up there with Tamiya and very intricate detailed parts. Similar to the Hobby Boss Sunderland. But clearly the best Battle in 72nd
1 17 April, 19:31

Somehow I missed the beginning, but from now I will follow your build-log with pleasure and interest, Andy 🙂
17 April, 19:45

Thanks Robert, Alec, Cuajete, and David, glad to have such discerning eyeballs on the build!….managed to lose the front windshield- so trying their customer service to see if there's a replacement service….🥴😞
19 April, 14:42

@David- I hear there are many issues with Trump's 48'er?….
@Ł- so far they've come back to me and maybe able to help…I am not sure if it's me, but hunting high and low reveals no piece 🥴
21 April, 11:54

Andy, I hope you have luck with the spare parts service or finding the missing part... Maybe some day you'll find you have both.
Cheer up!
21 April, 16:49

I believe there are some vac canopies out there Andy.I personally hate vac form canopies but!!.
21 April, 17:53

Thanks Cuajete, a forensic search of the studio floor and workbench has yielded nothing….but if they will send a spare for hopefully a nominal charge, I'll be happy…otherwise it's a search for something similar and the ensuing botch-job!
@David, vac-forms can be satisfying when delicately removed and cleaned up. For the sake of a mistake it's good when companies (Rob Taurus) often give you a couple in the packet? Best of luck!
22 April, 09:00

Thanks Patryk S.
Update on the missing part…Gilles who is the MD of FFROM has kindly sourced me a replacement. The moulds come from Ukraine and naturally are a little hard to come by with the current situation.
Therefore on here I'm recognising great customer service from FFROM!!
So far the kit is beautifully detailed and building well.
More photos to come!

Sticking to the Japanese theme, this was staring at me from my stash, begging to be build 🙂
Being a Meng kit, this will be a treat after the AZ kikka....
25 March 2021, 11:29

This is now ready for paint, hope to paint it this weekend if I can find the time 🙂
26 March 2021, 17:50

Ah very cool Jan is infected with the Nippon What If Virus...🙂
Well done and great progress so far Mate 👍
1 April 2021, 12:22

Thanks Daniel.
I was infected a while ago, seems the incubation time is over now 🙂
1 April 2021, 12:33

You got a Reppu or Keiun in your stash?
perhaps an idea for a mini gb in the future 🙂
1 April 2021, 12:51

No, I have not, I do have a zero, Ki98 and a shiden though.... Zero Group build would be Nice
1 April 2021, 13:20

Always wanted to take a hand on the A6M8 by Hasegawa that sleeps in my stash for nearly 20 years now.
Mitsubishi A6M8 Zero Fighter Type 54/64 (Hasegawa 51946, 1:72)
1 April 2021, 13:36

Very nice progress Jan 👍
Did I just hear Zero GB?! 🙂 I'm in!
@Daniel: Is that the A6M8 with resin cowling and so on? I use to have one but ended p using it for spares since I was not impressed with the quality of the resin parts. A couple of years back Hasegawa issued another A6M8 in all plastic (kit no. 09821) You can still pick one up for under 25,-€. Worth having a look 😉
Mitsubishi A6M8 Zero Fighter Type 54/64 (Hasegawa 09821, 1:48)
1 April 2021, 13:45

I have a 1:72 hasegawa A6M3 in my stash, was just about to start on a Hurricane, but like the thought of a zero gb......
Mitsubishi A6M3 Zero Fighter Type 22 (Hasegawa 51315, 1:72)
1 April 2021, 14:02

Hi Sebastian,. Yes the Resin Cast is the reason why the kit is still in its box🙂
But 1/48 is not my scale sorry
1 April 2021, 14:04

Scalemates Mitsubishi A6M Zero Group build 2021 (1. Aprilie pana cand 31. Decembrie, )
Just added the group build to the list of events 🙂
1 April 2021, 14:24

Daniel I have the utmost respect for you '1:72 people' 👍 I'm currently working on Arma's Yak-1 in said scale....boy I couldn't do that kind of tiny stuff all the time 😛
So....who's creating the GB then?! 😄
1 April 2021, 14:26

All done!🙂
Thanks Sebastian, I used valejo aluminium and new wood and a fine brush for the chipping.

The paintwork is done, weathering started. Interestingly at the moment the washing seems to have only a minor effect. This should change after the final coat of matt varnish. I assume it is due to the properties of Meng´s engravings. They are deeper than Tamiya or Hasegawa but not as pronounced as 1/72 Airfix kits. So the preshading from the black primer has already a deep effect which the washing only enhances a little bit.
