MikroMir Foxtrot Class - B-59
![Album image #1 Album image #1](/albums/img/6/8/0/247680-15269-80-720.jpg)
The contents of the box. I really had not envisaged how TINY everything would be
![Album image #2 Album image #2](/albums/img/6/8/1/247681-15269-31-720.jpg)
... or quite how flashy. Lots of this stuff to clean off
![Album image #3 Album image #3](/albums/img/7/1/3/247713-15269-61-720.jpg)
The hull comes together. Not so much in the way of locating pins
![Album image #4 Album image #4](/albums/img/7/1/4/247714-15269-79-720.jpg)
The Sail parts. Once again, no locating pins to speak of
![Album image #5 Album image #5](/albums/img/7/1/5/247715-15269-68-720.jpg)
A spot of rescribing required after they come together
![Album image #6 Album image #6](/albums/img/7/1/6/247716-15269-64-720.jpg)
And then it's straight on to the raised section of the hull. No guids here so you'll have to eyeball it and fill any mistakes 🙂
![Album image #7 Album image #7](/albums/img/7/1/7/247717-15269-85-720.jpg)
At this point I decided to add the PE deck. In hindsight, probably not the best move
![Album image #8 Album image #8](/albums/img/7/1/8/247718-15269-58-720.jpg)
And then on to the fiddly bits. Each screw is made up of 2 parts ...
![Album image #9 Album image #9](/albums/img/7/1/9/247719-15269-74-720.jpg)
... that need to be bent and then glued together.
![Album image #10 Album image #10](/albums/img/7/2/0/247720-15269-36-720.jpg)
Success!! Up until this point, I had ben ready to ditch the model completely. I was rather unimpressed.
![Album image #11 Album image #11](/albums/img/7/2/1/247721-15269-31-720.jpg)
After the success with the screws I decided to get adventurous. There's not proper shaft shaft to attach them too so ... A couple of holes ...
![Album image #12 Album image #12](/albums/img/7/2/2/247722-15269-74-720.jpg)
... and a couple of 0.5mm brass tubes later ...
![Album image #13 Album image #13](/albums/img/7/2/3/247723-15269-84-720.jpg)
And we have prop shafts 🙂
![Album image #14 Album image #14](/albums/img/7/2/4/247724-15269-87-720.jpg)
And now I was starting to have fun
![Album image #15 Album image #15](/albums/img/7/2/5/247725-15269-61-720.jpg)
While I had the brass tubing out, I decided to replace most of the antenna ...
![Album image #16 Album image #16](/albums/img/7/2/6/247726-15269-18-720.jpg)
... sensors ...
![Album image #17 Album image #17](/albums/img/7/2/7/247727-15269-39-720.jpg)
... and periscopes with brass
![Album image #18 Album image #18](/albums/img/7/2/8/247728-15269-36-720.jpg)
Coming together nicely
![Album image #19 Album image #19](/albums/img/7/2/9/247729-15269-67-720.jpg)
A couple more bits and bobs to add ...
![Album image #20 Album image #20](/albums/img/7/3/0/247730-15269-14-720.jpg)
... and some filler in spots ...
![Album image #21 Album image #21](/albums/img/7/3/1/247731-15269-44-720.jpg)
... and I figured it was time to start playing with paint, First a flat black primer ...
![Album image #22 Album image #22](/albums/img/7/3/2/247732-15269-90-720.jpg)
... and a base coat of Dark Sea Grey ...
![Album image #23 Album image #23](/albums/img/7/3/3/247733-15269-49-720.jpg)
... With the shiny bits touched up in Gold
![Album image #24 Album image #24](/albums/img/7/3/4/247734-15269-58-720.jpg)
And then the part that was alien to me. I wanted to weather with washes but I'd never done a ship before. First was the black wash to give definition with some rust added for streaking
![Album image #25 Album image #25](/albums/img/7/3/5/247735-15269-79-720.jpg)
![Album image #26 Album image #26](/albums/img/7/3/6/247736-15269-61-720.jpg)
![Album image #27 Album image #27](/albums/img/7/3/7/247737-15269-92-720.jpg)
For the streaking, I first added a spot of wash to the desired location ...
![Album image #28 Album image #28](/albums/img/7/3/8/247738-15269-98-720.jpg)
... and then, with a clean, dry brush, I draged down over the wet wash, starting from above the wash location. Varyuing the speed and strength of the drag will give differing streaks
![Album image #29 Album image #29](/albums/img/7/3/9/247739-15269-74-720.jpg)
The anchor was painted with Dark Iron buffable metaliser ...
![Album image #30 Album image #30](/albums/img/7/4/0/247740-15269-48-720.jpg)
... buffed and then attached
![Album image #31 Album image #31](/albums/img/7/4/1/247741-15269-64-720.jpg)
I used white was to try and create some salt streaks on the upper surfaces
![Album image #32 Album image #32](/albums/img/7/4/2/247742-15269-87-720.jpg)
My references showed that the subs usually have white borders around the sensors on the hull and sail. I certainly didn't feel up to painting these so I hauled out some spare invasion stripe decals and cut them into strips.
![Album image #33 Album image #33](/albums/img/7/4/3/247743-15269-37-720.jpg)
I think the strips for the bow sensor are a little too wide ...
![Album image #34 Album image #34](/albums/img/7/4/4/247744-15269-85-720.jpg)
... but the ones on the sail worked fairly well
![Album image #35 Album image #35](/albums/img/7/4/5/247745-15269-31-720.jpg)
While I had the Sol and Set out, I decided to add the kit decals. And here I made my greatest error. I did NOT add a gloss coat before applying them. They went straight onto a 'flat' paint and, off course, silvered like hell
![Album image #36 Album image #36](/albums/img/7/4/6/247746-15269-76-720.jpg)
The one side , at least, did not look too bad after a flat coat
![Album image #37 Album image #37](/albums/img/7/4/7/247747-15269-17-720.jpg)
The deck was then spraysed with more Mr Metal Dark Iron metaliser.
![Album image #38 Album image #38](/albums/img/7/4/8/247748-15269-53-720.jpg)
Seriously, this has got to be one of the greatest metalic paints out there. Even the new AK stuff can't come close to the metallic effects you can get with this stuff
![Album image #39 Album image #39](/albums/img/7/5/1/247751-15269-91-720.jpg)
Other than the decal issue (rather obvious here) I was actuallr rather pleased with the progress, the 'sticky uppy' bits also got a spot of Steel metaliser with flat black tops
![Album image #40 Album image #40](/albums/img/7/5/2/247752-15269-53-720.jpg)
Then I got adventurous and decided to add a flag and flagpole complete with halyard. The pole is 0.5mm brass tube. The flag is the kit decal on some lightweight foil and the halyard is 2 strands of fine wire braided together
![Album image #41 Album image #41](/albums/img/7/5/3/247753-15269-93-720.jpg)
Looks quite nice attached 🙂
![Album image #42 Album image #42](/albums/img/7/5/4/247754-15269-99-720.jpg)
The final construction step was to add the forward dive planes. I'd left them till last simply because I couldn't decide on whether to havce them stowed or deployed. In the end I opted for deployed.
![Album image #43 Album image #43](/albums/img/7/5/5/247755-15269-17-720.jpg)
You may nitice the grey patch over the identification number. Saved by history. On the cruise to Cuba, they painted over the numbers so I was able to hide that awful decal 🙂
![Album image #44 Album image #44](/albums/img/7/5/6/247756-15269-13-720.jpg)
A spot of dark grey wash was added to the sections of the hull that would have been underwater, to make the upper surfaces appear bleached
![Album image #45 Album image #45](/albums/img/7/5/7/247757-15269-42-720.jpg)
And the final step. A line of white wash was uses as salt encrustation at the waterline.
![Album image #46 Album image #46](/albums/img/7/5/8/247758-15269-40-720.jpg)
And then she was done ...

Great model! Do you happen to recall what size brass tubing you used for the antennae?

If I recall correctly, it was a combination of 1mm and 0.8mm
