Oh. I applied it with an old cotton glove. Let it set for a minute at the most, then buffed with same glove. After I was sure it was on there and dry and a bit shiney, I broke out the Dremel with a buffing pad and went at it.

Don, when you say you applied "it", did you mean the Rub'n Buff or the silver spark metallic lustre paste? Over primer definitely looks shinier.

Glen the kit with those wings came from is the old Lindberg kit. And that is a spare kit that I have because I had to buy a second one because I lost a part. One part that was it. But it was part of the engine. And I couldn't fabricate it so I have that kit sitting there missing a single part.

Angie, yes, I think it will do nicely. Still have to test it for masking and decals though.

Dutch, the rub n buff. The other stuff didn't work at all. I just posted the pic to show everybody to let them know don't even bother with that stuff. The rub n buff is the stuff to go with.

Don't have a Dremel. Hope good old elbow grease will give as nice a finish...

Don, did you dip the tip of the buffing wheel in Rub'n Buff, or just go straight at the area to be polished? What speed? I assume slower is better?

No, I just buffed it after applying it with cloth. I buffed by hand a bit with the cloth and made sure it was on there good. Then I hit it with the Dremel. Kept it moving back and forth so heat couldn't build up too much. Mine has a digital speed read out and I had it on 6.

Cortex, Augie so totally caused this. Her experiment spurred me to try what was available here.

Go to my Monogram 1/48 B-17G father/ son build project where I have posted my latest natural metal finish pictures. BTW, in the US, Michael's craft store has Krylon Chrome Paint in a spray can for approx $5. I might just become a natural metal finisher after all! I will post a link to my Monogram 1/48 SNJ in foil later.

Monogram B-17G Rub'n Buff Natural Metal Experiment | Album by Dutch (1:48) is almost done. My son did not want to experiment with different natural metal finishes, so we stayed with the Krylon Premium Metallic chrome paint. No Decals just yet. He only wants basic markings so he can Photoshop his own onto the plane. His inspiration was the book "A Higher Call" by Adam Makos, the Franz Stigler and Charlie Brown story.

Oh, and Don, thanks for steering us away from the DecoArt Metallic Lustre Silver Spark paste. I saw it at Michael's the other day in the picture framing section, so I assume it is a faux silver leaf compound. I have plenty of Rub'n Buff and Krylon chrome paint left, so I will keep experimenting with a few different projects. Thanks to Augie for starting this thread and to the rest of your suggestions, I am re-motivated!

How does the Rub N'Buff look ovet filler? I assume a primer would be needed to get good finish over filler...

Dutch
Gordon, generally speaking for any metallic finish, yes! It needs a good gloss undercoat to be really effective. So, once filler is sanded and panel lines re-scribed, I would recommend a light coat of primer followed by several light coats of gloss paint before letting it cure for at least 48 hours before applying Rub'n Buff and polishing. Don suggested cotton coin collectors' gloves, which I have ordered. I was using cosmetic cotton balls, which did not achieve the level of shine I was looking for; more closely approximating dull aluminum. Hopefully, the gloves will allow brighter polish due to the mush finer weave. R/ Dutch

I havent tried it over filler. I would presume exactly what Dutch said would hold true.

Album info

So here are my results using the rub n buff.

I got two products. The one on the right does NOT work on plastic, primed or not. Dont even bother.

The rub n buff did great straight on the plastic (wing on the left. And the pebbly surface is my fault) but I really liked it over Mr Surfacer 1200 black (wing on the right).
