A-10A

Album image #1
Those Revell pilots aren't very sharply moulded, and my painting certainly doesn't help with the result. Looks good enough from a distance. Helmet visor, hose and HUD were made from scratch.

Album image #2
Almost ready for painting. Fit was decent, the right wing was about a millimetre short though. Filed down the nose to make it a bit rounder, as the kit is really boxy, then had my first real try at engraving panel lines that were gone.

Album image #3
Primed with Mig ammo one shot. Medium green applied, XF-73 + XF-4 + X-25 10:10:2. The left profile painting instructions are wrong.

Album image #4
Gunship green applied, might be a bit dark. XF-26 + X-23 + XF-1 10:5:2.

Album image #5
Aaand I probably did something wrong, both greens are off while they looked alright during my mixing tests.

Album image #6
Trying to correct with a greener filter. I might just stop there, it's looking better with normal lighting. 3 & 4 at the bottom right were the colours I settled with while testing, I probably did NOT write down my mixes correctly 🙂

Album image #7
Some postshading and general blending with XF-26. Might still not be accurate but I like the result. Next up, varnish and decals.

Album image #8
No time for a decaling session, but the thing now stands on its legs and has a proper gun.

Album image #9
Two decaling sessions later. The decals are a pleasure to work with, although the instructions sheet is next to worthless for positioning them. I am happy to have managed not to butcher the mouth. Not looking forward to all the stencils though.

Album image #10
Stencils done, only lost like 1 trying to blow away dust 😮

Album image #11
Brrrrt.

Album image #12
Album image #13
First time trying x-22 + MLT, I like the shine better than future. It went down almost flawlessly, hiding most of the decal outlines. Will need a second coat. Just a few bubbles on the left wing roundel, hopefully some sanding will erase those.

Album image #14
Bought some AK paneliners, these are pure magic. Process is going slowly as I am also trying to learn how to use a DSLR and edit photos properly.

Album image #15
AK Paneliner for brown and green camo.

Album image #16
Hello there. Blemishes fixed, matte varnish sprayed and canopy unmasked at last. Things left to do: oil weathering, antennas and sensors, position lights and load.

Album image #17
Some silvering, but much better overall than my previous model. Pebeo matte varnish gave me kind of a pebbly finish and some white runs this time though.

Album image #18
More brrrt.

Album image #19
Might just load it with a pair of fuel tanks, but the kit ones seem too small.

Album image #20
Album image #21
Built a pair of 600 gallon tanks sourced from a Hasegawa EF-111. Looks much more the part than the Italeri on the right. Still need to find a good looking bagage pod, then this kit might be completed!

Album image #22
Finished at last!

Thanks, gonna try oil paint weathering on this after I fix those bubbling decals, it's going to be fun. And hopefully not a complete mess 🙂

Thanks 🙂
Progress is rather slow, and the model is getting stashed away unfinished as I have other non-modelling projects going on and I need to make some room.

Lovely job. Great attention to detail Pierre. That canopy painting (17) - stand out!! Like the little pilot figure.

Thanks for the comments guys.
I'm tempted to go with a pair of 600 gallons drop tanks as I like the way they droop but those in the kit seem too thin and straight compared to the one picture I found ([img1]). Maybe a travel pod too.

Thanks! I guess I found out with this build I'm a sucker for oversaturation, I feel this looks nice next to all the grey jets and drab helicopters 🙂

Thank you all for the kind words. Hopefully it'll be joined by a grey C version in 2019, and my pictures will be sharper by then😉

Probably not. Said red lady is even oversized compared to the profile that can be googled with little effort.

Amongst other things, the MAWS is also not the correct one, the kit nose and MLG nacelles are wrongly shaped, the turbines faces show the wrong number of winglets and a inaccurate cone shape, the cockpit and landing gears are overly simplified.

So now you know what kind of research and modifications to make when you build your own kit to your own standards.

lol @bobinspokaloo "build what you want, the way YOU want it, and above all: have FUN!"

And if you comment publicly, expect to be called out, albeit politely like here on scalemates, for crossing the fine line between critiquing and simply being obnoxious.

Thanks for the laugh.

Now that's I've regained my composure, I must say I find your stance fascinating.

Am I to believe that, by your logic, [****]ography becomes acceptable when it is historically accurate?? Would make cocks be insulting to women modelers as well??

So many questions...

Also, yes, military planes from the US of A showing nudity and profanity flew on many theaters. Search for "plane nose art" when you have a few minutes.

Martin Oostrom
I think you two guys hare banging heads against a cultural wall. Pierre is French. Being from Europe as well, I dare say we see the decal as just that, a decal. (in my case: a bit of colourful variation over the camo)

Bob is from the USA and clearly has a different view of these decals. As I don't know a better description, he is more politically correct (I don't want to put a label on you Bob, I just don't know a better phrase).

from a cultural perspective the both of you could be right. This is a public forum as stated above, just remember that chewing one's head off, also reflects poorly on yourself.

And now I wish the both of you a very merry Christmas! 👍

Wow, that escalated quickly 😉
But I can't agree with the hypothesis that the nosearts disappeared soon after WW2. Here's one of the proofs: dstorm.eu/pictures/nose-arts/a-10/?C=M;O=A
There are couple of more 'obscene' ones than the red girl on Pierre's Hog IMHO (e.g. "Playtime" or "Night Penetration" - the latter one made my day). 🙂
25 December 2018, 10:14
Pierre
Thanks for taking the time to try to explain this.

Nudity isn't [****]ography for most of the western world, nor is it considered sexist. Neither are male cocks a problem. Actually, I'll make sure to add in memoriam [*******] in my future models.

It really is a weird fight to pick over here on scalemates, especially since A10s from USAF notoriously also wore old fashioned nose art.

I'm still dumbfounded, as I originally understood the aggressivity to be about modelling accuracy.

Anyhow, merry christmas to you all.
25 December 2018, 10:28
Stephan H.
Hi Pierre.

Merry christmas and congratulations for the very well build bird. Crazy how anyone can think about [****]ography while seeing such an abstract illustration. Maybe not my generation. Anyway I believe any modeller can decide for the degree of historical accuracy he/she wants to realize. One very little change I would do to the red lady: cutting the decal along the panel line and wash the cut to improve depth impression.

Kind Regards
