Album image #24
On the front it is visible.

Album image #25
Best parts of the premium are real metal exhausts. No paint needed.

Album image #26
Engine of the non premium edition - cylinders glued into cowling.

Album image #27
Vickers comparison: Part PE, Gaspatch, kit part the lowest

Album image #28
The closed front is not nice.

Album image #29
Album image #30
The bigger size is correct but will be a task to make it fit.

Album image #31
Axle is bended outside, and the diameter in the wheels is bigger 🙁

Album image #32
Some problems: 1. prepared for metal half axle, 2. to wide - to shorthen teh middle part removes details, still to wide on the picture, 3. struts are now to long due to new angle

Album image #33
So I made a new brass construction, mainly squezzed pipe for struts. The lowest part is a tube!

Album image #34
Inside pins to hold the middle part.

Album image #35
New wooden part ...

Album image #36
Covered with thin brass and soldered on the back side. Opened the cut outs only on upper side!

Album image #37
Plugged together - I like the outcome!

Album image #38
Compared to the original - the suspention will be made from streteched sprue.

Album image #39
Tinned.

Album image #40
Primed with Mr.Metal Primer and MrPaint PC10 late.

Album image #47
Plugged to the fuselage

Album image #48
moved stitching up (with Eduard PE)

Album image #49
The struts needs to go out one rib more

Album image #50
The "wing windows" are provided as PE, but closed.

Album image #51
So I created some space for it in the thin wings.

Album image #52
Some small brass and copper work.

Album image #53
Some tap on the right side, and vertically the pump.

Album image #54

Album image #57
Pulleys mounted, the holder are streteched sprue.

Album image #58
With window and PE frame it will look like this.

Album image #59
Seems to be in scale - looks better then closed PE in pic 50.

Album image #60
No dials in kit, so I added spare decals and PE

Album image #61

Album image #69
Blue parts are painted

Album image #70

Album image #73
Painted black, google for "Aldis sight".

Album image #74
You see my roof window 🙂

Album image #75
This was damn complicate to integrate the Gaspatch Vickers!

Album image #76
Album image #77
The halves bends together, so creates pressure with 0.6mm nickel silver.

Album image #78
Control stick and other details added.

Album image #98
All parts mounted and painted, look nice....

Album image #99
... but BIG FAIL !!! The bonnet does not fit on it!

Album image #100
Made a new one, V2.0 is much more backward.

Album image #101
The look is ok.

Album image #102
The bonnet fits and was fixed.

Album image #103
The openings shows the pipes and the gear

Album image #104
Wheels were already painted with PC10, removed and painted blue

Album image #105
I love the blue and PC10 combination

Album image #106
The rudder assemebly is painted too

Album image #107
Radiator are mounted, added 0.4/0.2mm brass wiring (steam overflow?)

Album image #108
The lower wings (very sturdy!) and landing gear are in place.

Album image #109
The metal exhausts of the Premium edition are fantastic, love them! Very thin opening.

Album image #110
That is the actual state.

Album image #111
Cut boxwood stripes and sanded struts.

Album image #112
A macro of the unpainted struts, brass is 0.4mm.

Album image #121
Now there is a nice solution for RAF wire rigging on British biplanes!

Album image #122
Those little beats have a hole! EZ line fits as recommended.

Album image #123
Or a 0.1mm wire.

Album image #124
Some terminals on a 0.1mm wire for metal paint.
Please note the small size!

Album image #125
Some prepared for rigging.

Album image #126
To have the kit PE already mounted was a very BAD idea, lost some paint because I had to remove the ears of the PE.

Album image #127
This is one of the better connection, not all are that nice.

Album image #128
Landing gear is also rigged, as seen on pictures.

Album image #129
Here the model alone again.

Album image #130
Ailerons mounted and control wires added.

Album image #131
Here I'm in the process to add control wires to tail plane.

Album image #132
All the wires together.

Album image #133
Still a lot to do, for example rigging of the tail.

Album image #134
Or a lot of small details, like this multiple part kit PE for the pitot.

Album image #135
That is the actual state, all parts are finally mounted.

Album image #136
Another 14 connections around the tail and for securing the control horns from the back.

Album image #137
Inside the cockpit 6 lines was to be added. That is tight and hard to see, but this is only possible after mounting the upper wing.

Album image #138
A nice example of the great kit PE, that is a cowling locking part ...

Album image #139
... mounted here in front of the exhaust. This pictures shows also the last two rigging lines from cowling to upper wing. Used Gaspatch One End turnbuckles since this are no RAF wires.

Album image #140
The lockers on the windscreen sides are the smallest PE parts of the kit. The shape looks exactly as on pictures of the original biplane, unbelievable! See both below the "C", only the manual is wrong, because each one has a different form and an individual number.

Album image #141
The windscreen was mounted together with the prepared Aldis sight, and this little PE glued in place.

Album image #142
Another topic on the ToDo list was the airscrew.
The kit contains two variants. The upper one looks exactly like as on the prototype, could only be a bit longer. The one below is more a later one, according to my reference book. So I made a wooden one of the first production batch, which this serial belongs to (the C3799 is not a kit offering). Here the raw sanding on front.

Album image #143
And the view from back.

Album image #144
The prop boss is a kit PE, but I added a middle locking, turned on lathe from brass. First wood varnish.

Album image #145
The final airscrew, the locking is glued and the boss is "bolted" with 0.2mm nickel silver.

Album image #146
Plugged to the Dolphin. Originally I wanted to paint the blades gray, but the airscrew is to nice to hide it!
The Datafile shows beautiful pictures of C3786 with a wooden airscrew. The C3803 as option of the WNW kit has a wooden airscrew. This C3799 is just between them, so I guess this painting practice was done later and not yet on the first Sopwith batch.
It is not glued yet, so any veto against my theory?

Album image #147
I ordered also this Lewis from Gaspatch. I had some, but not this variant. Painted with Alclads and scratch build a mount. I guess this (white) plate is to avoid to shot into the airscrew.

Album image #148
Painted and glued in place.

Album image #149
Pitot was added and connected with 0.2mm lead lines.

Album image #150
And a final view!
The scratches on the vickers was fixed with painting Alcalds with brush, other scratches fixed too. The RAF wires are metalized and the sockets of the RAF wire terminals are painted black. Finally a very light weathering was applied.

Wow, thank you all for visiting!
Copper State Models was known for resin kits, now located in Lettland under new ownership. This kit was the first plastic kit. Really pitty, the Premium Edition is no more available (may be ebay or some seller still have it in stock). I will show the differences during the build or visit my review on Modellboard.

dear lord... I'm not sure I can take another one so soon... The man has absolutely no consideration for others. Why can't he just let us wallow happily in our own mediocrity? WHY?
27 November 2018, 23:02
Daniel Klink
Because he is shameless. Even in small exhibitions i have to sit with my constructions right next to him and his perfect squadrons.. But otherwise he is one really nice and funny guy and thats the more important thing for me, and that 90% of the visitors just walks by or looking through my works on the table 🙂

But more impressive for me than the quaity of each of Bughunters works is the output of them in numbers and in nearly no time.

A warm welcome to the new visitors!
These parts have been stored in a half-finished state for far too long and are really worth to convert it to a biplane! One reason for the delay was a Memorial Group Build. I was awarded for my result (the yellow/blue Fokker D.VII) with a free selection of two sets of the actual Pheon decal program - thanks to the sponsor Pheon! One of my selections was the Dolphin/Snipe set, because the decals on my Snipe kit from HiTech are much to old. As side effect this offers the possibility to not do the C4131 (decal of the premium kit edition) as planned but paint the nose are other parts blue and built the colorful C3799 by Capt Irving 👍
Sometimes it really helps to wait a bit😉
15 April 2020, 15:14

The blue paint is on, decided for Gunze H5. Some details are also prepared.

Yep - real brass, but not soldered. I constructed the parts from micro tubing and glued with CA.

After a long mounting session I can only say, do not try to use Gaspatch Vickers, don't even think about it!😉
19 April 2020, 20:22
Slavo Hazucha
I see you are working in an accelerated mode too! 🙂 Missed this before, but at least I now had something nice to set my eyes upon on a Sunday evening... I really like the seat - probably not even in the top 10 challenging affairs in this build, but it's just so nice... (maybe my time in the garden today helps me see things this way... 😄). And the blue is just gorgeous - it may have one DNA-string in common with Peter's Aussie truck, but it surely does look absolutely "royal" on a plane too!

Well done & at least I can follow the finale! 👍
19 April 2020, 21:00
Wim van der Luijt
Great work so far! As for the Vickers: if you call it complicated that means us mere mortals would probably give up in frustration 😄 they do look good now, as does the gunsight
19 April 2020, 21:00
bughunter
Welcome! Slavo, most of the work was done 2018, but stopped due to a group build. After being annoyed by decals, I turned to this shelf queen. The blue one is the only colorful Dolphin I know, the others uses Battleship Grey noses or PC10. Gunze H5 matches nearly the blue ring of cockades, if painted dark in many layers.
Wim, see pics 28-30, then you will know why it is so hard to make them fit. That is often the problem with aftermarket parts, also engines. They are in scale, but do not fit to the thick plastic cowlings etc. The kit parts are undersized to make them fit.
19 April 2020, 21:35

The wings are prepared and painted. The next step are decals.

Bugsy... can I just put in a standing order for "gobsmacked amazement"? Just assume that for every single one of your projects, and I'll let you know if something changes. That'll save me a lot of work trying to come up with new ways to express my jaw dropping fascination with your builds. There isn't an unlimited supply of adjectives in English you know...😉
26 April 2020, 15:56
Daniel Klink
the same procedure as every bugproject 🙂
Looking once, twice....mouth opens wide eyes are getting bigger and bigger..

Then..pure amazement and joy! 👍
26 April 2020, 16:39
bughunter
Thank you my friends, but I have build better models. There was not enough gloss here and there, so I got a lot of silvering, also some bubbles. I tried to recover with Daco Strong - better, but not perfect.
From a distance it will be ok😉
26 April 2020, 17:16
Wim van der Luijt
I'll take the same order as Greg...all your builds are really really supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

27 April 2020, 23:37

Thank you my friends! It means the same for all - I had to build this part again. I have no problem to spend hours to build something, but I really hate to work for the bin! 🙁
28 April 2020, 16:58
Wim van der Luijt
What's next? A pilot with working bowels? (all you did was find a way to not make the interruptor gear, that's not failure🙂 )
28 April 2020, 17:01
Bernhard Schrock
Pictures 100-103: Just I have counted the teeth with the gearwheels: your Wieheisster have a gear ratio of 44/18. 🙂 its a pump?
28 April 2020, 18:59
bughunter
Thx Wim! Bernhard, you made my day! I just created fake cogwheels of a looking-ok-diameter, and Bernhard counts the teeth😉 But you are right, it was somehow a pump. The book describes the Constantinesco interruptor as hydraulic. This allows faster rate of fire than mechanical systems, due to lack of inertia. Each pipe controls one of the Vickers MGs.
28 April 2020, 19:30
bughunter
Remaing parts painted blue and radiators are mounted now.
28 April 2020, 20:24
René "Lord Bilbo" Bartholemy
Small question: what do you use to remove paint?
28 April 2020, 21:03
bughunter
I masked the wheels first and removed the MRP PC10 with a cotton swab and alcohol (C2H5OH), not to wet. This works also for Gunze. The Alclad grey primer resists. Fortunately no alcohol got under the masking film! So the "rubber" paint with a Gunze grey is still ok.
28 April 2020, 21:11
Slavo Hazucha
Very nice detail with the "Flare Dispenser" next to the cockpit!😉
29 April 2020, 08:27

The Dolphin is a monoplane now. Love the colors of the last picture 👍
29 April 2020, 19:43

Leave it that way Frank... It looks already flyable even in this state of built..
Great mate...once again 👍

Looks very good, the colors are striking. Looks like it could fly ...
30 April 2020, 12:51

Thx Daniel! For steam punk it is a great idea, but I think I continue to build a Dolphin, as biplane😉
30 April 2020, 12:51

The manual of the Pheon decals recommends to create the struts using boxwood. You don't have to tell me things like that twice!
1 May 2020, 20:52
bughunter
One step forward, two backwards. The frame between the upper wings breaks 😭 The struts needs to be shortened further and repainted - but now it is a biplane!
The project is now on hold until a parcel arrives from Greece.
2 May 2020, 16:58
Thomas Bischoff
... turnbuckles from Gaspatch?
2 May 2020, 17:08
bughunter
Nearly ... I have the stash full of turnbuckles, but this bird don't use them. Again a british biplane with "RAF wires". These are aerodynamically profiled rods with threads at the ends. The best representation I created for the Bristol Crocodile, but this is huge effort. So I want to try something new while using the kit PE holders.
2 May 2020, 17:23
Alexander Grivonev
Incredible 👍

Astonishing work on a very elegant and rather rare Type..
Love that Blue 👍 Frank you are topping the top with every built...

Ok that stripped down stuff of yours is in my opinion a class of its own👍

Bernhard Schrock
Holzstreben aus echtem Holz in 1.48?!?!? Genial!! Was ist das für eine Art Holz dieses Boxwood dass es fest genug für 1:48 ist! Die Größe der streben schätze ich auf 4x1 mm. Bricht der Draht seitlich nicht aus?
2 May 2020, 18:25
bughunter
Thank you mates!
@Daniel Elegant? Due to the stagger wings I find it a bit on the ugly side 😉
@Bernhard Wooden struts is nothing new on my biplanes - very often used, if the original uses alse wood. See for example Sopwith Schneider Monaco Racer 1914 | Album by bughunter (1:48) But I used until now pear (in german Birne) and have used boxwood (in german Buchsbaum) only for my airscrews. I don't have much boxwood, it is not cheap, hard to get and now the "Buchsbaumzünzler" (varmint) kill all the trees in middle Europe. On the Dolphin the wood was very bright, as far as I now ash (german Esche), so the manual of the Pheon Decal set recomments to use the bright boxwood, or bamboo.
2 May 2020, 18:59
Daniel Klink
Yep from my point of view it is an elegant design..especially the fuselage front design looks very sporty 🙂

After a lot of work to create RAF wire terminals from scratch (see my Bristol Fighter project) now a nice solution is available from Gaspatch Models.
If you order some, please tell Costas that you got the hint from me😉

Unterschied zwischen 126 und 127: sehe keinen, sieht für mich beides genial aus. Was meinst du mit lost paint?
125: Gaspatch? Hohl, zum durchführen von Seil? Wie groß ist das Teil wirklich? Kannst du mal ein Lineal beilegen?
9 May 2020, 17:07

Ja, das sind die brandneuen Gaspatch RAF terminals. Siehe Bilder 121-124, Lineal liegt in 124 darunter.

I have only used the metal ones, beside this new resin type. I ordered a huge amount for the kits in my stash years ago after trying some, since you never know how long is a product of a small company is available.

This bird could now be flown, since all ailerons and co are mounted and control wires added.

Eye catching and adorable....! You did write to that incredible picture 138: "that is a cowling locking part ... " No Sir, that is pure magic to me! And this applies to the whole build!

Thank you mates for your nice comments, highly appreciated!
Roland, welcome to the show! And so much praise from a builder of super-clean models means a lot for me! The kudos for the PE goes to Copper State Models, which created this great kit! And this was the first plastic kit of this group of new owners, the Caudron G.IV are fantastic too. I hope there will be more models in 1/48 after the latest 1/32 Nieuports.
That cowling parts are not the smallest, there are two side lockers for the windscreen frame😉 More from this stage soon.

Great show time and again - the way the wooden "Grissini sticks" are now fixed & rigged to wing calls for a special level of respect... 👍

I still like the blue very much, it looks even more splendid now between the browns & greens sported by the rest of the plane...

Thank you Daniel and Slavo, your comments are always a pleasure to read 🙂
Moe details are mounted and tried some brush painting for details and repairs. To fix scratches and other small problems with the MRP colors and a brush is hard, but possible.
