Spitfire FR IXc MK915 - pink recce
Project inventory
First step: erasing the wrong wheel bulges and filling in the rivets in front of the main wing spar
Camera bay door cut out
Heavy thinning on the inner side of the fuselage
All rivets on the door filled, ready for the camera window and new rivets
size comparison of bulkhead no.11: scale drawing vs. Revell vs. Eduard
Shrunk cross sections no.13 and 14 to match width of Eduards's bulkhead no.12
bulkheads in place. I'll be adding one more layer of styrene and then the final shape will be cut
Cockpit door opening enlarged by around 2mm
Bulkheads no.13 and 14 completed - far from perfect but good enough for the small camera hatch
CAD sketch of the F.24 camera
draft fr the F24 camera
Soem refining on the brassin cockpit - removing unnecessary structure
moulded on tube - meeeeh
replaced with 0,2mm copper wire
drilled open all the lightening holes on the bulkheads; managed to crack the right one
tried adding the plumbing to the front bulkhead (eduard) which is more than a tad to small compared to Tamiya (left) and Revell (right)
Revell/brassin bash finished! the sidewalls needed massive thinning to insert the cockpit into the fuselage
caomparison of the Tamiya head armour vs. eduard - the eduard one is ridiculously wrong and doesn't even fit to the brassin bulkhead
scartch build head armour from 0,2mm styrene
all openings on the seat drilled/cut open
comparison for the seat armour: Barracuda, Tamiya, eduard - scratch build below
dry fit with the seat; notches added to the ratchet
dry fit of the whole cockpit - lots of gaps need reworking
cables added to the voltage regulator
first coat of primer
black base
marbling and preshading
blending with Gunze C364
and here's the look withou anything else - quite alive already!
Seat coloured with Tamiya brown and watercolour pencils
eduard IP painted in NATO black, followed by pure black from below and dark grey from above to produce shadows - quite hard to photograph
details painted
eduard decals: quite thick and no single dials - just why?
No decal for the compass included - MDC to the rescue!
unfortunately the placards didn't settle down as I hoped
pure joy: the Master barrels for the Hispano cannons
instrument dials in place - clear acetate applied for testing purposes on one of them
F.24 cameras SLA printed
those are tiny!
Another view on the IP; still missing the glass for the gunsight
sutton belts installed
Type 25 camera mounts fresh from the printer
new cradles for mounting inside the fuselage
template for re rivetting
new goodies
Tamiya - Revell - Barracuda
Find the errors 😄
Find the errors 😄
the Barracuda part is far superior, but how do I install it with the wings glued?
fuselage primed and sanded to remove the "mad rivetter's" work
Really not Revell's A-game with the huge holes (rivets) and the sink marks
drilled the lower wing on my spare kit
a quick cut
and it fits!
a "little" bit of plastic removed from the upper wing
and I can get it in with the wings shut!
looking sharp
Revell = meh
much better looking
cutout made on the test mule with the wings assembled
it takes around twice the time, but it's possible to do so!
it takes around twice the time, but it's possible to do so!
fit isn't perfect but okayish for a dry fit
horrible fit
all around
wooden spars (3D printed and painted with oils) added to the bulkheads
camera cradle test fit
Why Revell?
There shouldn't be a gap here...
There shouldn't be a gap here...
The lower belly fix leads to nasty gaps on the wing roots
styrene shee to the rescue
Wrestling the wings into submission to get a consistent dihedral
port wing now without spacers but with loads of glue
seams filled and sanded
much better now
Another seam...
filled the gaps with Milliput
fillered with Mr. Surfacer 500
added a glue interface for the carb intake
glued shut at the rear; notice the gap at the front
fix for the front tested
after setting time the front portion was forced shut
0.5 mm shim added to the front fuselage
trimmed to shape
looking okayish

Well I got my brassin cockpit for a bargain. So in my case it's the same price as the kit 😄
The details are beautiful but the eduard shrunk all dimensions especially if you compare them to Tamiya..

Thanks mates!
It may take some time for the next steps since I'm waiting for PE parts from AIMS to dress up the camera bay door.

Are the cameras of your own design? I would be interested in buying a set to my Pink Spitty from you if it's possible.

Yes, I made them based on measurements from a mate over on LSP and another friend of mine did the 3D printing. Not intending to sell them. Shoot me a message if you're interested in the .stl file.
