Albatros on floats
![Album image #1 Album image #1](/albums/img/6/7/8/657678-21997-91-720.jpg)
Miliput is great! gives enough time for forming.
![Album image #2 Album image #2](/albums/img/6/7/9/657679-21997-83-720.jpg)
The seat was also modified slightly.
![Album image #3 Album image #3](/albums/img/2/0/8/658208-21997-75-720.jpg)
A block of veneers.

![Album image #6 Album image #6](/albums/img/2/1/1/658211-21997-69-720.jpg)
The spinner fits.
![Album image #7 Album image #7](/albums/img/2/1/2/658212-21997-94-720.jpg)
Some layers of paint.
![Album image #8 Album image #8](/albums/img/2/1/3/658213-21997-63-720.jpg)
![Album image #9 Album image #9](/albums/img/4/9/4/658494-21997-52-720.jpg)
So lets start with the floats. Here I had the first problem: the struts between the floats was bent (see the picture on top), so I decided to replace it by a scratched brass part. This had other advantages: I could correct the size (should be smaller com
![Album image #10 Album image #10](/albums/img/4/9/6/658496-21997-11-720.jpg)
Due the smaller size I need to fix the holes in the floats, done with Evergreen profiles. Here in detail, so the brass is glued with CA on a big area. The brass is only profiled between the floats.
![Album image #11 Album image #11](/albums/img/4/9/5/658495-21997-68-720.jpg)
The mounted floats are sanded, primed and sanded again.
![Album image #12 Album image #12](/albums/img/4/9/7/658497-21997-86-720.jpg)
The floats are painted Gunze H417 "Light Blue", which is a blue grey.
![Album image #13 Album image #13](/albums/img/4/9/9/658499-21997-49-720.jpg)
Then I masked the floats and painted the struts in Gunze H70 grey (green grey).
![Album image #14 Album image #14](/albums/img/4/9/8/658498-21997-27-720.jpg)
Finally I applied the kit decals with that big lozenge pattern. Haven't seen that pattern not as aftermarket decals, only the smaller sea pattern. A lot of decal softener was needed, until the decals showed the underlaying structure.
![Album image #15 Album image #15](/albums/img/0/0/2/659002-21997-40-720.jpg)
This aileron cutting I always do to bring more dynamic and reality into the model. Please not here the small hole between the strut mounting holes and the aileron. This is the control wire, but how to move them?
![Album image #16 Album image #16](/albums/img/0/0/4/659004-21997-54-720.jpg)
With new hinges, a deep cut into the wing and a brass tapering lever (the hole in it is big enough to take a Gaspatch turnbuckle later) it looks much more original.
![Album image #17 Album image #17](/albums/img/0/0/3/659003-21997-68-720.jpg)
The lower wings are one part with a part of the fuselage. Two cuts later I had 3 parts.
![Album image #18 Album image #18](/albums/img/0/0/6/659006-21997-88-720.jpg)
Two steel wires and some drilled holes allows a reunion, on the picture together with the complete upper wing.
![Album image #19 Album image #19](/albums/img/0/0/5/659005-21997-52-720.jpg)
The next step was grey primer on the top side ...
![Album image #20 Album image #20](/albums/img/0/0/7/659007-21997-11-720.jpg)
... and a white primer below.
![Album image #21 Album image #21](/albums/img/0/0/8/659008-21997-66-720.jpg)
After applying of a big amount of small masking tape the bottom side was darkened and shadowed, cloudy in stripes.
![Album image #22 Album image #22](/albums/img/0/0/9/659009-21997-58-720.jpg)
After removing of the tapes there are white ribs as a base for the next paint layer.
![Album image #23 Album image #23](/albums/img/0/1/1/659011-21997-60-720.jpg)
With MRP bleached linen and linen 2 I airbrushed the linen surfaces. The marking field was painted then with MRP bleached linen, which is a off-white, and white
![Album image #24 Album image #24](/albums/img/0/1/0/659010-21997-83-720.jpg)
After a layer Future the crosses are applied. The kit contains crosses in different layouts, great!
![Album image #25 Album image #25](/albums/img/0/1/2/659012-21997-26-720.jpg)
And again as macro.
![Album image #26 Album image #26](/albums/img/0/1/3/659013-21997-27-720.jpg)
The upper surfaces needs at first Future and then decals. I was positively surprised that the decals for the upper wing has cutouts for ailerons and the ailerons decals are individual parts - thanks, Eduard! Decal for the upper wing in one piece!
![Album image #27 Album image #27](/albums/img/0/1/4/659014-21997-87-720.jpg)
This also as macro. The second layer decals - crosses - are not yet done.
![Album image #28 Album image #28](/albums/img/0/9/0/660090-21997-45-720.jpg)
The tail plane was also cutted
![Album image #29 Album image #29](/albums/img/0/9/1/660091-21997-19-720.jpg)
With carefully drilling and some steel wires I will get a straight tailplane
![Album image #30 Album image #30](/albums/img/0/9/3/660093-21997-45-720.jpg)
I also predrilled the struts and provided them with pins. 24 pins needs a lot of concentration on this very thin struts!
![Album image #31 Album image #31](/albums/img/0/9/2/660092-21997-75-720.jpg)
The parts for the cockpit are prepared, partly glued, primed with white primer and painted with "wood base".
![Album image #32 Album image #32](/albums/img/6/2/3/660623-21997-48-720.jpg)
The axle is 1mm brass, the bearing a 2mm brass pipe (turned a bit smaller on lathe) and the securing washers are PE brass. Drilled a 1mm hole, soldered and turned again on lathe.
![Album image #33 Album image #33](/albums/img/0/9/4/660094-21997-50-720.jpg)
The wood is painted with oils on cockpit parts.
![Album image #34 Album image #34](/albums/img/6/2/2/660622-21997-14-720.jpg)
A small piece of alu was turned with my lathe to act as a tool. Ok, quick and dirty, could be done better, but it is only a tool. In the middle you see a 1mm hole.
![Album image #35 Album image #35](/albums/img/6/2/1/660621-21997-66-720.jpg)
The Eduard propeller spinner fits into the recess, and so I can drill from the backside ...
![Album image #36 Album image #36](/albums/img/6/2/6/660626-21997-37-720.jpg)
... into a small piece of sprue, which I glued inside of the spinner.
![Album image #37 Album image #37](/albums/img/6/2/5/660625-21997-35-720.jpg)
So I can plug the spinner onto the axle easily, all parts together:
![Album image #38 Album image #38](/albums/img/6/2/4/660624-21997-72-720.jpg)
With a little breeze of air, everything runs smoothly and nothing wobbles.
![Album image #39 Album image #39](/albums/img/3/0/7/661307-21997-99-720.jpg)

![Album image #40 Album image #40](/albums/img/3/0/6/661306-21997-45-720.jpg)

![Album image #45 Album image #45](/albums/img/3/1/1/661311-21997-16-720.jpg)
All mounted into fuselage.
![Album image #46 Album image #46](/albums/img/3/1/2/661312-21997-25-720.jpg)

![Album image #49 Album image #49](/albums/img/3/1/5/661315-21997-53-720.jpg)
I dropped that idea.

Small parts secured with brass pins
![Album image #60 Album image #60](/albums/img/5/4/1/661541-21997-53-720.jpg)
Vents and pipes for ignition wiring added.
![Album image #61 Album image #61](/albums/img/5/4/2/661542-21997-17-720.jpg)
On the other side the carburetor and the inlet pipes (multiple resin parts, had to made them fit).
![Album image #62 Album image #62](/albums/img/5/4/3/661543-21997-61-720.jpg)
I made spark plugs from 0,3mm brass pipes, added ignition wires (thin like a hair!), painted and mounted them.
![Album image #63 Album image #63](/albums/img/5/4/5/661545-21997-49-720.jpg)
On the other side I also 6 spark plugs. I wanted to wrap a heat isolation but different materials failed, so I simulated that using different paints.
![Album image #64 Album image #64](/albums/img/5/4/4/661544-21997-26-720.jpg)
The room between engine an wall looks so empty! I check the WNW manual of an Albatros and found a tank there. Soldered one from brass, because real brass look great
![Album image #65 Album image #65](/albums/img/5/4/6/661546-21997-24-720.jpg)
Turned a brass filler with cap on lathe and soldered into a hole on top
![Album image #66 Album image #66](/albums/img/5/4/7/661547-21997-41-720.jpg)
Sometime ago I changed the contour to match the drawing.
![Album image #67 Album image #67](/albums/img/5/4/8/661548-21997-18-720.jpg)
So the engine fits now! The brass tank can also be seen.

![Album image #69 Album image #69](/albums/img/5/5/0/661550-21997-15-720.jpg)

![Album image #71 Album image #71](/albums/img/0/1/2/662012-21997-90-720.jpg)
The 964 seems to use a higher volume water tank, the smaller Eduard part was nice, but due to the bigger engine also to short. So I created a new one using Evergreen according to the original picture. I forgot a picture of turned and milled brass inlet.
![Album image #72 Album image #72](/albums/img/0/1/4/662014-21997-44-720.jpg)
I modified the fuel tank with more details.
![Album image #73 Album image #73](/albums/img/0/1/3/662013-21997-82-720.jpg)
Water tank painted, mounted to the engine and glued all in place. The small brass pipe is 0.5mm, I will add to it later a 0.3mm pipe to dissipate steam over the top wing. The last view on open fuselage.
![Album image #74 Album image #74](/albums/img/0/1/6/662016-21997-72-720.jpg)
Glued the fuselage halves together and drilled the hole for the air screw mount.

![Album image #76 Album image #76](/albums/img/0/1/7/662017-21997-96-720.jpg)
The water tank was moved from the centerline on 964, I guess to improve the view.
![Album image #77 Album image #77](/albums/img/0/1/8/662018-21997-48-720.jpg)
Finally a fitting test, only plugged together.

Not missing a Bughunter build of course... Nice custom pillow & weld lines 👍 - stripes of sheet softened & cut?

Not much parts, but a great amount of interest 👍 A warm welcome to the show to all of you!
Slavo, the weld lines are simply stretched sprue, glued into the seat with Extra Thin.

The atoms fell off my workbench and were eaten by the carpet monster 🙁

Bughunter do not forget to make some real wood golf clubs for the base commander!
I guess in your builds, the models even smell like the real deal, wood, paint, oil & metal... 😉

Someone with admin rights linked my album to the project and destroyed my idea to create a little riddle 🙁 Me wanted to link it later to the project, to late - now it's public known.
Welcome Martin and Alec!

Now, especially for Martin, let's start with real parts for this seabird! Scratched parts as usual 😉

Over the last days multiple update pics are uploaded, now the cockpit is finished. The engine will be the next step.

Fresh pics with the master signature 1€ cent coin - a clear indication that some amazing work has been done in Bughunters Great War workshop 🙂 Crafting aluminum tools for propellers is definitely something new, and the results look most convincing. 👍 Watching all the different clever bits you devise during your builds is a pleasure and a great pool of ideas! 👍

Thank you Stephan, Slavo and Marc! I hope, that it will not end as shelf queen and I can finish this project without interruption. More in the next days ...

Sigh, The Bug strikes again. I'm *again* looking for words, and *as usual* I can't find any to do your little gem justice.

Yes, please keep writing. And extra "thank you" for doing it in English 👍 👍 👍
The engine look super, the simulated exhaust wrap is very convincing as well.

Thanks, the situation improves slowly.
Uploaded pictures from time to time, on pics 95-98 the parts are only plugged together. The impression of a model provides some motivation.

Danke Bernhard! Damit es zur Faszination kommt, erfordert es aber erstmal einige Mühe 😉
The Albatros developers used normal turnbuckles in the middle of the ropes, so I need the double amount of brass sleeves and anchor points!

Excellent work. I made my own first expierience with rigging just recently on a 1/72 scale,....man - I did not expect how painful this could become. 🙂
Contributes even more respect to all the Bi-plane builder since then.

Thank you mates! It may look easy, but behind it is the experience of threading 1000 times in brass sleeves and turnbuckles 😉

Added Windhoff radiators, with scratched brass. Later W.4 used a wing cooler in upper wing.

I was concerned that I'd get repetitive strain injury of the jaw due to the number of times I said "WOW!".
Amazing stuff – as always!

Thanks for a great step by step on a number of techniques especially the turnbuckles and shading for the doped linen. I can't believe this is 48 scale.

as usual, staying in awe at your skills... pity about those struts breaking... but the new ones certainly will not. and they look perfect now 🙂

![](/profiles/img/21997-347-s.jpg)
Sorry, have not yet commented. Here a crane could hook in and lift the Albatros out of the water. That's why I used fishing line, the rubber thread would be flat on the surface.

The journey is over now - this seabird is finished and after weathering I will create a new album with the final pictures.

When cloth looks like cloth, metal like metal and wood like wood, it means Bughunter is again done with one of his peculiar little treasures😉 Tripple hooray for a beautiful early seaplane - I hope you pick up the topic & work yourself up to the Schneider Trophy pieces, would be real artworks in your hands!

Thank you very much! Slavo, are you a prophet? I want to build the Sopwith Schneider. I build already a Lebed Lebedev VII aka Sopwith Tabloid | Project by bughunter (1:48) , which is a Tabloid. At the end I had the idea to build the Monaco biplane, I tried the floats: Sopwith Schneider - Racer Monaco Trophy version | Album by bughunter (1:48)
I have the SH kit, the Small Stuff 100hp engine, but no decals are available: a friend made masks for it on his plotter 👍 So I will do this, not now, but soon!
