1:48th Vb stub-wing
![Album image #1 Album image #1](/albums/img/1/9/2/828192-36121-17-720.jpg)
Started a few years ago, and promptly stopped. Then decided as I'm finding some 72nds a bit of a dexterity-challenge to cross to the 'dark-side' and try with, I hope, a benign build from Tamiya with a bit of Eduard-Zoom for added 'eye-candy'.
![Album image #2 Album image #2](/albums/img/1/9/3/828193-36121-61-720.jpg)
Stub-wings to make a break from the traditional!
![Album image #3 Album image #3](/albums/img/4/7/8/829478-36121-59-720.jpg)
Eduard’s details are easier to handle in this scale. Pops out the details- I’ve not used all of it.
![Album image #4 Album image #4](/albums/img/4/7/9/829479-36121-97-720.jpg)
All ready for the close. It’s difficult to know why Tamiya re-tooled their Mark 1 recently- this tool is superb!
![Album image #5 Album image #5](/albums/img/4/8/0/829480-36121-50-720.jpg)
Fuselage went together with no fuss.
![Album image #6 Album image #6](/albums/img/7/4/4/829744-36121-19-720.jpg)
Amazing how quick it comes together
![Album image #7 Album image #7](/albums/img/7/4/5/829745-36121-65-720.jpg)
Odds are the cannons won’t stay on until the end! A bit of white undercoat for the yellow flashing, and sky band
![Album image #8 Album image #8](/albums/img/7/4/6/829746-36121-45-720.jpg)
Some how seems un-Spit like with the shortened wings
![Album image #9 Album image #9](/albums/img/9/6/8/831968-36121-72-720.jpg)
Going to try my hand at some masks from the 1:1 diagram Tamiya gives you. So we photocopy first.....[update: can’t recommend gyro cutter, yet. Vinyl masking sheet good though]
![Album image #10 Album image #10](/albums/img/4/5/2/837452-36121-61-720.jpg)
Bizarre- Tamiya’s flat light grey is definitely gloss. Nevertheless, can apply decals direct?
![Album image #11 Album image #11](/albums/img/4/5/3/837453-36121-46-720.jpg)
Tamiya’s other RAF colours most certainly “flat”. Abandoned the gyro cutter in the end: technique not mastered. A few touch ups and we’ll gloss her.
![Album image #12 Album image #12](/albums/img/4/5/4/837454-36121-22-720.jpg)
Remarkably viceless application of Tamiya’s paints, and not a blemish in main sight!
![Album image #13 Album image #13](/albums/img/4/2/4/838424-36121-55-720.jpg)
Trying to finish her by Battle of Britain Day 15th September (and yes, I know this never fought then!)
![Album image #14 Album image #14](/albums/img/7/2/6/838726-36121-64-720.jpg)
May need to slim the tops of the yellow/red bands, and tone them down a touch.
![Album image #15 Album image #15](/albums/img/7/2/7/838727-36121-12-720.jpg)
A bit of work around the wings’ leading edges, and then onto the decals.
![Album image #16 Album image #16](/albums/img/2/4/8/843248-36121-29-720.jpg)
After a coat of Klear and some touch-ups, I began the decals. Tamiya’s are very thin, and using the softener do conform somewhat to the raised contours, but retouches will have to be done.
![Album image #17 Album image #17](/albums/img/2/4/5/843245-36121-34-720.jpg)
The roundel-decals have a white circle undercoat- this you need as the top roundel is semi-transparent. Again softener needed to try and get them to confirm to raised details. Some touch ups required, especially around the fin and main wing roundels.

And on Battle of Britain Day, 15th September......a Mark Vb which of course never fought. Near completion
![Album image #19 Album image #19](/albums/img/9/5/4/843954-36121-51-720.jpg)
Exhausts to finish. Canopy to go back. Smoke to add. Flat varnish....then done
![Album image #20 Album image #20](/albums/img/9/5/6/843956-36121-23-720.jpg)
Super, viceless kit
![Album image #21 Album image #21](/albums/img/9/5/7/843957-36121-90-720.jpg)
And more.....
![Album image #22 Album image #22](/albums/img/9/5/8/843958-36121-29-720.jpg)
The underside’s weathering with enamels- not brave enough yet to try oils

@Thomas: this may be the build on the cusp of a realisation....I'm beginning to struggle with its smaller sibling, the 72nd...

@Roland, many thanks. That's motivation to get this, (and P-61B/Tu-128M), all done!

Looking really good so far Andy, I like it. I have got so many 1/72 kits to build I can't justify a foray into 1/48....yet 🙂

@Guy: yup, I've got many 72nds to finish, one day..., however the issues that the Arma Hurricane raised and my desire to show more of the plane, means I'm drawn up a scale. I just need to see how many of the bigger WW2 bombers are available?

Determined to have this finished by the 15th, Battle of Britain day, (I know, it's a Mk.Vb...but it's a Spit)

So here in the UK it's the 80th anniversary of the turn of the tide for the Battle of Britain. Essentially my country's been dining out on this magnificent achievement for this length of time! So what better way to announce said anniversary?....a Spitfire Vb !!!!(that never fought- in case you were going to comment!)

@Roland:thanks!!....re. oils: I've used them before and managed to wear off the paint underneath when using the turpentine: so my technique needs adapting. I have a tube of burnt umber to play around on the 2 Lancasters I'm putting together- I'll try them on the internals first.
