How is the quality? Well... I think the casting isn't too bad. The wood grain on the cart looks alright, and some of the finer details on the boiler look pretty good. The gears seem to line up just fine so far. But, I think there was a bit of a QC problem with the kit that I have. It was pretty obvious that there were temperature problems when making it. Loads of discoloration, dips in the sprue are frequent, and the plastic (especially the black plastic) was so soft that my Mr. Thin cement brush came back with a black tip from the slightest touch. Also, when I unboxed it the kit was heavily scratched up, again on the black plastic, and part #11 was actually incomplete. I had to make part of the push rod connection with some sheet styrene. Some of the metal rod connection points are also a poor fit and had to be drilled out. Of course there was also a fairly significant amount of flash on the kit as well. Its a pretty old kit, so not too surprised. Still having fun building it though.

Nice to see something different here.
If you want the coal to look more realistic - if you tear small pieces out of a cork it looks quite good. Glue and seal it with PVA and paint it a semi gloss black. If you have some real coal - tiny bits are even better.
