Sure, I had to look this up as well ? It's all about protection. The "birdcages" on top of the hatches were against charges thrown atop of the hatches, The sandbags and the wood against magnetic charges. The wood and concrete at the sides were also extra protection against the Japanese AT projectiles. I found this website telling all about it:
