Mike van der HaarSure, I had to look this up as well ? It's all about protection. The "birdcages" on top of the hatches were against charges thrown atop of the hatches, The sandbags and the wood against magnetic charges. The wood and concrete at the sides were also extra protection against the Japanese AT projectiles. I found this website telling all about it:

Mike van der HaarThanks to something I did 25 to 30 years ago, back then I added wood to the sides of the hull, I now have a little more interest for the PTO. I'm not just building, I also like to know a little more about the subject.
