BAE Systems Hawk WIP
![Album image #1 Album image #1](/albums/img/2/7/2/1024272-73194-75-720.jpg)
I decided to improve the look of the model by thinning the main gear wells borders. This was achieved with a Proxxon tool and cool blood.
![Album image #2 Album image #2](/albums/img/2/7/3/1024273-73194-25-720.jpg)
The result of 1 hour work. I found it very useful to hold the piece against a light during all the filing process, constantly checking to avoid removing too much material.
![Album image #3 Album image #3](/albums/img/2/7/4/1024274-73194-34-720.jpg)
The air intakes were hollowed to improve the frontal look. This implied new air trunks made from sheet styrene, a spare engine "face" and some epoxy putty later on.
![Album image #4 Album image #4](/albums/img/2/7/5/1024275-73194-26-720.jpg)
The main gear bays deserved a little work too. They are much deeper on the real plane than on the model, so I removed as much material as I could from the wing insertion tabs too.
![Album image #5 Album image #5](/albums/img/2/7/6/1024276-73194-99-720.jpg)
Both cockpit seats are equally tilted backwards on the real plane. The kit's back seat reproduces this feature OK, but the front one's floor is horizontal. I carved a deep line along the "hinge" point and carefully bent the piece.
![Album image #6 Album image #6](/albums/img/2/7/7/1024277-73194-32-720.jpg)
I found some nice pictures of the nose avionics bay open, so I decided to put some extra work here.
![Album image #7 Album image #7](/albums/img/2/7/8/1024278-73194-93-720.jpg)
This is the piece that serves both as avionics bay floor and front gear bay top. The trapezoidal shape is the wheel housing.
![Album image #8 Album image #8](/albums/img/2/7/9/1024279-73194-36-720.jpg)
Main gear bays cleared, waiting for big scratch work on the structure and perimeter surfaces.
![Album image #9 Album image #9](/albums/img/2/8/0/1024280-73194-82-720.jpg)
The side consoles of the cockpit are too thin on the model. I wanted them to look more like the real thing, so first step was to thin the cockpit walls as much as I could. Enter Proxxon again. I love this tool!
![Album image #10 Album image #10](/albums/img/2/8/1/1024281-73194-92-720.jpg)
This is the result. You can also see the epoxy resin air intake trunking.
![Album image #11 Album image #11](/albums/img/2/8/2/1024282-73194-88-720.jpg)
My favourite picture, homemade X-rays.
![Album image #12 Album image #12](/albums/img/2/8/3/1024283-73194-43-720.jpg)
Test fit of the cockpit, seats, front and rear bulkheads and instructor's instrument panel.
![Album image #13 Album image #13](/albums/img/2/8/4/1024284-73194-88-720.jpg)
Due to the now wider cockpit space, the tub's surfaces needed to be extended to meet the new walls in a few places. Sheet styrene was used.
![Album image #14 Album image #14](/albums/img/2/8/5/1024285-73194-45-720.jpg)
Side console panels were trimmed to match reference pictures, then covered with styrene sheet. Now there is more space to scratch build all the panels, buttons, etc. I also added the foot-rests.
![Album image #15 Album image #15](/albums/img/2/8/6/1024286-73194-71-720.jpg)
The front dash board is also scratch built. First I glued in place a cantilevered piece that will hold the dash board.
![Album image #16 Album image #16](/albums/img/2/8/7/1024287-73194-52-720.jpg)
New instrument panels. A lot of trial-error was needed. First I drew the outline in millimeter paper, then cut it to get a template for testing. When it more or less fitted, I cut the same shape in styrene to fine tune it.
![Album image #17 Album image #17](/albums/img/2/8/8/1024288-73194-58-720.jpg)
Dash board. It has a particular curved bend that required a lot of testing.
![Album image #18 Album image #18](/albums/img/2/8/9/1024289-73194-11-720.jpg)
Avionics bay greebling.
![Album image #19 Album image #19](/albums/img/2/9/0/1024290-73194-40-720.jpg)
Little improvements on the front gear leg. New oleo and shape corrections.
![Album image #20 Album image #20](/albums/img/2/9/1/1024291-73194-50-720.jpg)
major elements of the front fuselage.
![Album image #21 Album image #21](/albums/img/2/9/2/1024292-73194-92-720.jpg)
Some wiring added with copper and lead.
![Album image #22 Album image #22](/albums/img/2/9/3/1024293-73194-41-720.jpg)
Test fit of the avionics. There is a lot of cabling on the real plane, much more than this, but I think I'll leave it this way to avoid the risk of damaging the work.
![Album image #23 Album image #23](/albums/img/2/9/4/1024294-73194-76-720.jpg)
Scratch built exhaust interior. To achieve the conical shape I fitted a thick piece of sprue on the micro drill, as if it were a lathe, and shaped it with a file.
![Album image #24 Album image #24](/albums/img/2/9/5/1024295-73194-91-720.jpg)
Looks good to me.
![Album image #25 Album image #25](/albums/img/2/0/1/1025201-73194-60-720.jpg)
Cockpit structure completed. The fragile dashboard is also glued in place. I hope it resists all the upcoming work...
![Album image #26 Album image #26](/albums/img/7/1/2/1030712-73194-77-720.jpg)
After many dry fit tests, both instrument panels fit reasonably well, so I'll leave them like that. Now it's time to start adding details like the displays and lots of knobs everywhere.
![Album image #27 Album image #27](/albums/img/7/1/3/1030713-73194-60-720.jpg)
I cut the flaps off to display them in a parked position. That led to a supplement of styrene along the original piece's front edge, followed by careful sanding it into shape. The first addition wasn't enough so you can see a second one.
![Album image #28 Album image #28](/albums/img/7/1/4/1030714-73194-83-720.jpg)
Scratched new vents to achieve a more realistic look.
![Album image #29 Album image #29](/albums/img/7/1/5/1030715-73194-58-720.jpg)
These two gentlemen here are asking for some attention. I started with copper wire ejection handles. My plan is to add epoxy resin cushions and chute bag. Maybe next weekend...
![Album image #30 Album image #30](/albums/img/8/3/1/1030831-73194-35-720.jpg)
The back IP cover must be precisely positioned for the IP to lean at a proper angle underneath.
![Album image #31 Album image #31](/albums/img/8/3/2/1030832-73194-25-720.jpg)
Canopy will be open, more scratch to come. The kit's fit is very good, if only those panel lines were thinner... Airfix did a good job reproducing the main hatches and surface detail on the left fuselage half, and then mirrored it all on the right. But according to references, both sides are actually quite different. Black CA as putty filled the wrong details.
![Album image #32 Album image #32](/albums/img/8/3/3/1030833-73194-10-720.jpg)
![Album image #33 Album image #33](/albums/img/0/1/3/1044013-73194-33-720.jpg)
Left side wiring and piping completed.
![Album image #34 Album image #34](/albums/img/0/1/4/1044014-73194-23-720.jpg)
The result of a two hour session on the side consoles. All the knobs and buttons were glued with slow setting CA.
![Album image #35 Album image #35](/albums/img/0/1/5/1044015-73194-45-720.jpg)
New test fit of the cockpit and the fuselage halves. They are all getting along well so far.
![Album image #36 Album image #36](/albums/img/0/1/7/1044017-73194-61-pristine.jpg)
Scratch built rudder pedals.
![Album image #37 Album image #37](/albums/img/7/6/6/1044766-73194-37-720.jpg)
Side consoles finished, now it's time for the instrument panels!
![Album image #38 Album image #38](/albums/img/4/1/7/1046417-73194-74-pristine.jpg)
Front instrument panel ready.
![Album image #39 Album image #39](/albums/img/4/1/8/1046418-73194-14-720.jpg)
In place. The back one is waiting for adjustments on its dashboard to improve the fit.
![Album image #40 Album image #40](/albums/img/4/1/9/1046419-73194-23-720.jpg)
The naked seats are so sad... But there are some issues that must be addressed first, like the control sticks and the fitting of the canopy.
![Album image #41 Album image #41](/albums/img/8/5/7/1047857-73194-79-pristine.jpg)
Back instrument panel also ready.
![Album image #42 Album image #42](/albums/img/8/5/8/1047858-73194-93-720.jpg)
Back IP dashboard waiting for final detailing, main elements done.
![Album image #43 Album image #43](/albums/img/8/6/0/1047860-73194-70-pristine.jpg)
Front dashboard detailing. Later I added some wires at the front that I had forgotten.
![Album image #44 Album image #44](/albums/img/8/6/1/1047861-73194-77-720.jpg)
Windshield test, nothing prevents it from staying in place. Big relief! I hope I can get rid of those scratches. There is also a little hole at the front that came with the kit. It's not on the frame, so I will not repair it.
![Album image #45 Album image #45](/albums/img/8/6/7/1047867-73194-93-pristine.jpg)
Control sticks. 🙂
![Album image #46 Album image #46](/albums/img/7/8/7/1057787-73194-66-720.jpg)
I added a raised reinforcement panel present on port side, and finally completed the stabilator pivot.
![Album image #47 Album image #47](/albums/img/7/9/1/1057791-73194-44-720.jpg)
The last two pieces of the cockpit before painting begins. I tried Archer resin rivets for the first time and they worked just fine.
![Album image #48 Album image #48](/albums/img/7/9/2/1057792-73194-32-720.jpg)
Those two pieces in place with everything else but the seats.
![Album image #49 Album image #49](/albums/img/1/1/2/1081112-73194-49-720.jpg)
After a few busy weeks, I managed to go back to the workbench and paint the cockpit.
![Album image #50 Album image #50](/albums/img/1/1/3/1081113-73194-50-720.jpg)
Impressionist style instrument panels
![Album image #51 Album image #51](/albums/img/1/1/4/1081114-73194-77-720.jpg)
Avionics
![Album image #52 Album image #52](/albums/img/1/1/5/1081115-73194-41-720.jpg)
I primed every part black, followed by thin layers of a mix of Gunze's grey/blue/white for the base color, avoiding recesses to let the black show a little. I used a whitened version of this color made with Vallejo's for the structure, to increase contrast.

New project, new challenges. Main one being to master the Proxxon micro drill tool, and improving my scratch skills with cockpits and gear/avionics bays.

Spanjaard, it became a little lightmare to glue everything in place without messing it up with CA. These pieces are quite difficult to handle, but well, I like challenges!

WOW David! I admire greatly builders who scratch build. Although I don't, I can appreciate the time, research, skill and discipline required to do this. I think this all looks awesome and will follow with great interest from here 👍 🙂

i have seen 1/48 aftermarket that do not look as good as what you have done in 1/72, fully scratched. simply jaw dropping.... incredible.

Wow, thank you so much all of you for your praises! I'll do my best with the remaining stages too, feels kind of under pressure now! 😉
John: That was fun! Short sighted if anything! Meaning this "close distance supersight" comes when I take my glasses off, nothing fancy actually!
Piotr, I have also a 1/72 Fencer already started, from Trumpeter. Looking forward to see some progress on yours!
Brianireland: let me check the kit box... confirmed, 1:72. Little shelf, short budget!
20 January 2022, 19:30
![](/profiles/img/21096-573-s.jpg)
David, in regards to little shelf space, you should be trying 1/144 😉 there are kits there with amazing detail. Sweet and specially Platz come to mind. specially now that Eduard is reboxing some of them, it is al lot easier to get them.
23 February 2022, 13:47
![](/profiles/img/73194-710-s.jpg)
Spanjaard, I agree. I wish I could get Platz's SR-71 in 1/144, I'd love to build it.

![](/profiles/img/21096-573-s.jpg)
I have that in my wishlist... preorder from Japan is tempting.... 1999.co.jp/eng/10810568 but that is a rebox of Dragon, so i am not sure if the quality is as good as "normal" Platz models...
