If you lookup the actual HMS Victory restoration, it appears that the hull is actually grey and black, but It may have originally been natural wood color. baesystems.com/en/ar..erved-for-the-future However, as the artist, you can do whatever you like 😉

Thank you, although that link isn't working for me. For now, I've just been following the instructions and using the supplied paints. When I get through my current batch of models, I plan to take my scale modeling up a notch, do a lot more research, and attempt to use more advanced techniques. But for now, this will do, as long as the finished result looks nice and I'm enjoying myself and I'm learning.

They put copper plating on wooden ships to keep the worms from eating them. njscuba.net/marine-b..rms/teredo-shipworm/

Thank you for everyone's comments! That's fascinating Ben M, very interesting read. I'll have to do more research into this! Maybe it's not as unrealistic as I thought!

Okay, so did a very quick Google search, and wow, the HMS Victory did indeed have copper sheathing. So it's entirely accurate, hence why the model instructions call for it in the first place. It was my ignorance that led me to assume I'd gone wrong. It also explains why the pattern on the bottom of the hull is as it is. It's not representing wooden planks, but "small" copper plates. I'll link an incredible photo of an incredibly accurate model with the copper sheathing on display. The model is something you can purchase and is made out of real wood and just puts anything else I've ever seen to shame. Absolutely incredible craftsmanship! [img1]

Also, looking at it. I still feel like I would have gotten a more accurate result spraying the copper metallic paint on top of a brown undercoat, rather than straight onto the black primer, as from the photos I've seen, the real copper has more orange appearance than mine does. But I'm still very happy with the results, now I know about this!

From the HMS Victory Wikipedia page: In March 1780, Victory's hull was sheathed with 3,923 sheets of copper below the waterline to protect it against shipworm.

Let me know when you get started on it, I'll be very interested in seeing your progress. By the looks of your other projects, it's going to turn out a lot better than mine!

I know you're feeling very self critical, but it looks pretty good once it's all together. No model ends up being perfect. It's all a learning process. Yellow is a tough color to paint.

Thank you Ben, that's very kind! I am very self-critical! I think watching too many YouTube videos of very talented modellers has given me high expectations! But I am happy with how it's coming together in the end. I've learned a lot from the project, so that's been good too.

The most important lesson: always check the reviews here on ScaleMates. Then reality will match tour expectations.
Nice work on this one Lee 👍
