F-104 1/72 Matchbox Build Group - retro-modelling
Box contents ,,, at least with this one I got the stand ,,,,,
Colourful sprues
Mould says 1976 ,,,,, pure nostalgia of those days whe we just built and painted it whatever decoration we lliked.
Main fuselage parts glued together, This time I'm taking a more secure way with the nose ballast ,,,, just PVA glue, and some white metal (of course) that came from an old radial engine ... In the end I opted for an in-flight pose ... so I could have avoided that.
First coat of FS24079 green Gunze H 309.
Meanwhile I searched for vintage Sidewinders in the spare-box ... and I also found two spare tanks from an ESCI F-104 Red Idian. The fit is perfect to the Matchbox kit wing tips. Also found the sledge pylon suport for the sidewinders.
This is how it lloks after three coats of H 309 green. Nose has been painted FS24087 Gunze H 304. All brush painted. Also ventral fin , intakes and tail plane have been glued in place.
Missiles rack in place.
Also wing-tip tanks in place.
I've got the feeling that the stand provided in the box is too small for this model ...
Kit decals were useless .... Protection paper had stuck to the decals. No way to use them. So I had to search in my spare decals box and I found decals from a Revell and a Heller Draken, which will we the donnors for the insignias, and tail badge and flags. Unfortunately I've got no decals for the yellow stencils .....
First phase for decalling completed. Now I'm searching for some suitable decals that could be used as yellow stencils. More anon.
Second phase
I did decalling in 3 phases because I had to put decal over decal in several places.
Danish flag didn't stick very well so I had to cover the decal with PVA glue.
I know the decoration is not 100x100 true but this is the best I could get. Also , as this is a retro-project ... you know , at that time I didn't care so much about fidelity.
After a coat of Vallejo semi-gloss rattle can .... when set aside for drying ,,, the model fell from the support and one wing and the nose probe went away. No difficult to repair any way.
Calling it done
Sidewinders came from the spare parts box ... but I'm sure are from Matchbox.
The stand from the kit is much to small for that model. I grabbed a pretty one from a 1/100 Tamiya Draken.
Which is quite nice and elegant.

I remember building the '91 rerelease of that one back in the day.
Following with great interest.

I built it long long time ago , probably in the late 70s .... pure nostalgia ...... let's see how it turns out ,,,
Thanks mates !
At that time the model was painted in the splinter German camo ,,,, I'll have to made my mind up for this one ,,,,, Greek , Danish, Belgian, Norwegian ..... depending on the decals I've got in my stash .....

Album info
Another retro-modelling for the Matchbox group build .... Love those old kits with all those fancy colours. As usual with my retro-modelling projects no putty and no airbrush will be used. Also I usually take the "retro-information" I still have from that time .... But in this case ... as this is not one of my favourite subjects I don't have old books referring to the Starfighter ,,, So I'll take the information from the internet or more modern books. This will be a little license that I'll take
