Dora Wings 1/48 Curtis Wright CW-21A Demon as AVG Interceptor
The little known Curtis CW-21 was built as a lightweight hotrod interceptor. With a climb rate of 5,000 ft/min the little Curtis met expectations for an an aircraft capable of intercepting Japanese recon and bomber aircraft in the Chinese theater. So even though the USAAF passed on it, the Chinese purchased about 20 and several were slated for the AVG "Flying Tigers". Unfortunately, they were all lost to various circumstances and none of them made it to the AVG. This example represents a "could have been".
Dora wings kits are getting better and better with each new release and this kit is no exception. Previous Dora kits I've built had minor flaws including untidy mating surfaces and less than authoritative fit in some areas. These flaws are solved here - Dora is bridging the gap between short-run and mainstream top kit makers.
My build is mostly out of the box with the exception of a few 3D printed details in the cockpit and full airframe riveting. I also used aftermarket decals for the AVG markings. Paint is custom mixed Tamiya XF series. Figure by Reedoak.
