While I've ben waiting for the varnish to dry on the AMX I made some progress with the F18D. It is going together quite well but some carefully fitting and rubbing down was needed to get the air intakes to fit ok

I see they have the windows covered to practice instrument flying. Love those Naval Aviators.

Thanks for the encouragement Thomas, and Frank, yes I guess it's time to take that masking tape off!

For some reason I'm putting off painting. I'm working on some little things like the landing gear struts, exhausts, and wheels. I'm also trying to paint before I put all the guns and antennas on. I saw a video of them doing it with white glue. Keep your fingers crossed that it turns out okay.
1 30 March, 09:30

Welcome to the party, Skyhiker. The model is a pleasure, but check out the transparent parts. Some people complained about them. I'll be waiting to see your compilation.

Łukasz this camouflage was very problematic at first. But a fresh idea saved it.

So, as I had put before, we start with a splash of 140, then move to detailing it..
18 November 2024, 08:31

We do the black which I use Hu RC401 for, details picked out with artists pencils (grey and red)
some dirtying of the floor too
18 November 2024, 08:32

Instrument panels started, same as the rest of the tub, 140 base, rc401 for the black and then details picked out with a grey artists pencil.
19 November 2024, 00:43

So, fuselage is together with wings and before I go further, its that time to play the colour match dance..
So much so, while listening to some classic Huey Lewis and the News, I came up with new words for one of their songs.
Instead of "And get the honky-tonk blues" Its now "And get the color-match blues
and before you come at me, yes, I know its a cover.
26 November 2024, 18:35

Lol thanks Martin, I still have no idea why everyone raves about my paint jobs.
26 November 2024, 18:46

Hairy-stick-master......? Sounds like something from an erotic fetish video.... Im sure its some advanced building technique but i think a better name could have been picked..
26 November 2024, 18:47

Hairy stick is what the masters of the airbrush blow jobs call brushes
26 November 2024, 19:25

Oh alright. thanks. But now i can't get the picture of an airbrush giving someone a blow job out of my head.. thanks.. (btw i agree with Martin, from what ive seen you are very good with paintbrushes.)
26 November 2024, 19:47

Now for the most part she's together, started the paint.. Wings first because I wanted to see how the colour choices worked out..
30 November 2024, 15:12

Progress is ongoing... however now stripping the paint off for the 3rd time.. having a nightmare with this.
6 December 2024, 13:24

Welp, about a half a litre of paint, 5 meters of tape and this is where we're at. never have I had to strip and repaint a model more time's than this one
10 December 2024, 22:54

cockpit is just as I like them to be 🙂 and a vert colorful bird no doubt, I will tag along 🙂
10 December 2024, 23:00

Thanks Spanjaard, I have some repair work to do in the office, the stripping has caused some damage in there.
10 December 2024, 23:10

Oh and for those of you insane enough to try and replicate the colour scheme... good luck,
The dark blue is actually a two coat solution to get that colour, first is Airfix (yes seriously) M27, then a thin over coat of Humbrol acrylic 104.
The grey is humbrol 128
Then the other blue is a custom mix which was a nightmare
11 December 2024, 10:24

So, we're nearly there, some minor bleed issues to correct then its ready for gloss coat and decals.
15 December 2024, 03:02

Interesting camo, although swirly blue would be better camo to blend in with your desk. 😄
1 15 December 2024, 05:08

Thanks Gorby 🙂 Yeah the camo is unusual which when I saw it, I knew I would have to replicate.
15 December 2024, 18:38

Very interesting scheme 😀 never seen it before. Nice project, nice model 👍👍
15 December 2024, 21:00

I have some to do in that scheme.. good news is I can tell you the colours to use now 🙂
12 January, 02:30

So been so slow with this.. but the small decals are kinda destroying me lol.. so I managed to get a whole bunch done today
3 April, 22:23

Yea, F-4 's are bad that way. I finally finished my Kitty Hawk F-94C Starfire. It was a bear to build, but it was their first kit.
4 April, 22:08

Yep, I'm a gluten for punishment you know that. I think I only have one KH kit left, their F9F-8T Cougar. I loved their F-101A/C it went without a problem.

12 13 November 2024, 18:21

Yep, apart from the brass undercarriage (bogeys). I was left a part built GP40 when my dad passed away, trouble is he got the dimensions wrong and it was 4cm too short, and not the right height.
I have to consider that if it's wrong, it is not correct, and the task will be harder to amend the build to match its size.
So I'm starting again. I found some drawings online and scaled them using Photoshop. I intend to RC it too. Then I'll have to lay some track in the garden.
17 November 2024, 18:12

Welcome to the first kit in my life that I can call overengineered for sure.
The white parts are scratched to take the place of PE parts or offerings to the carpet monster (did I mention I have no carpet in here?)
Cockpit solely contains 21 parts (including PE) + decals (fuselage walls not included) 😮
You have been warned.
5 January, 10:37

Woww... I like the overengineered from Łukasz 😉
I can't resist to follow it 😛
5 January, 18:57

It will be slow, I can assure you 😄
And I might need stronger magnifying glasses too 🙁
5 January, 20:30

Welcome Gents to this very frustrating project.
The designer(-s?) went full ahead towards the full compliance with the original as far as I can see.
There is maybe 1/4th of the cockpit visible now (w/o the canopy!) and they really think that a plastic mast glued to transaprent windshield can withstand the rigging.
15 January, 21:12

Łukasz, I think it would have been better to make the Amodel's kit because of the great experience you have with those hard old tools, 😛
The last part with the mast and rigging seems very complicated. It might be better to drill a little carefully into the windshield so as not to glue the mast flush and try not to make it too weak with the wire tauting.
17 January, 19:54

True señor, considering starting a Hansa Jet or sth like that next 😄
And regarding the mast - this is exactly what I did - drilled a 0.4mm hole to insert 0.3mm tube, squeezed flat on the inside part (the outer part will be made flat later).
The only problem was - I damaged the PE gunsight inside, so I had to rob one from the second kit in the twin set.
17 January, 20:42

It can be considered the very last branch of the Polish gull-wing family - the rear fuselage and tail were incorporated from P.24 licence production line.
17 January, 20:56

Welcome Jennifer & Stefan!
I finally started spraying the main colours, the first layer being the famous pink primer 🙂 and RLM04 soon after.
Warning to all future builders: watch out for the cowling, in my case the fit was appaling.
22 January, 19:53

Well, the detailing of this kit kept me frustrated more and more - so it landed on the shelf of doom.
It turned out I wanted the fuselage band to be too yellow and I flodded the damn rivets. And then when trying to wash the paint off, I took wrong bottle (Mr Hobby Tool Cleaner instead of the levelling thinner) and I melted some rivets completely.
No idea when I'll go back to it, maybe if I buy a very tiny riveter, who knows...
Thanks for watching
22 January, 20:40

That's a shame, it was looking very good.
Galaxy Tools do a good and reasonably priced riveting tool which I would recommend:
scalespot.com/review..axy-rivet/review.php
1 23 January, 10:15

Many thanks mates.
I'm looking at various riveters, but the fact I can barely see the rivets in 1/72 makes their restoration a challenge on its own.
I definitely need a break from that kit, perhaps I should switch to this one (being A-model mold actually) 😛
IAR-80A (SOVA-M SVM-72013, 1:72)
1 23 January, 10:30

It's a shame to read that, Łukasz 🙁
It was meant to be. Felicia is calling you 😛
Maybe you can use some parts in the Amodel/SOVA kit.
23 January, 18:59

That looks totally salvageable. I have the Galaxy tools riveter too, it is quite usable. Bought mine from eBay directly from China
23 January, 19:15

Łukasz, yes, probable salvageable, but I know the feeling when you just cannot make yourself backtrack your steps and rather start over again.
23 January, 20:00

I'll have a closer look at the riveters, I promise. Not sure my sight will follow, I might need some magnifying glass too.
Let's see if my budget can cope with both 😄
1 23 January, 20:47

I am sad to see you stop this project, it's a pity, hopefully some day.
1 24 January, 23:19

Alright, I went back to it way faster than I initially thought 😄
Bought two sets of riveters and 0,3mm turned out to be the one.
I need to correct the left side of the fuselage before applying the yellow again.
4 7 February, 20:36

Started spraying the undersides today, fingers crossed all these rivets survive that 😄
2 9 February, 20:48

Looking really Good Lukasz 😃👍 Like you put the antenna through the windscreen.. correct. I relocated my one to the side as was worried about breaking glass as was stupid thin!
You got cowling nice in the end.
Good luck with the next steps 👍👍
15 February, 16:15

Cool to see you back at this project again! The riveting looks good and the paintjob is awesome too!
15 February, 22:11

Good to see you continued this project. The restored rivets and the paintjob are looking great.
16 February, 09:04

Good to see you continued too. I agree with mates. Restored rivets and painting job looks great 👍
16 February, 19:37

Thanks everyone, I just sealed the little Romanian bugger for decalling.
Seems like most of the rivets are more-less visible, should be enough for an airplane that is not meant to boost the Exhibitionary Air Force 😄
16 February, 20:30

The rivets still look good even after your paint layers. Overall looking good Lukasz.
1 16 February, 21:54

This looks better and better, I am so glad that you didn't quit but decided to push through.
18 February, 05:44

Welcome back - this break was caused by searching a shade to darken the yellow as Techmod decals turned out to be darker than recommended RLM04.

49 27 February, 13:23

Lol, well I must admit Zvezda is not my favorite brand, but it wanted to be made.
28 February, 15:41

I've decided with this model not to get caught up in Advanced Modelling Syndrome by correcting the design but rather try to work with the kit. This presents it's own challenges seeing as I have to adjust and connect misaligned parts without damaging the raised panel lines. But I hope that even with this extra work it will still be faster to build than correcting the design.
1 March, 12:39

I have a sneaking suspicion that Zvezda mixed resins or other poisonous chemicals in with their styrene. I got a reaction in my sinuses, from sanding the plastic, which I've never had before. I really need to get better at taking more precautions with this hobby.
1 1 March, 20:39

It is good to know that I have to watch with any Zvezda kits I may buy. That is a terrible practice on their part.
1 March, 21:48

Maybe it was from the debonder or maybe it's just a coincidence. I don't know. Zvezda is based in Russia, I'm not sure how controlled the plastics are there or how bad the black market is for chemicals. I doubt Zvezda would intentionally use toxic chemicals. If there is an issue I would imagine it to be with their supplier.
1 2 March, 00:33

Zvezda (Star) from Russia is next to Amodel and Modelsvit from Ukraine my preffered choice for Russian jet fighter, i have, let me think, 100 kits from Zvezda bought in Russia and never experienced any problems on their polystyrenes. The usual wet decals got better recently, but still sub-standard (always auf Begemont on standby), but most importantly i get model variation that nobody else has, and some of their scales are pretty accurate. You also find their makes back in Revell or Italerie cartons. Amodel is horror and real sanding nightmare in terms of fit and accuracy. On this SU-30 i gonna watch and with excitment.
3 3 March, 12:48

Nice Aircraft, l really like a Zvezda kit 👍
It's a sanction's issue with Zvezda supply! It's the government's that war with each other! the people suffer.
The SU-30 is a great looking aircraft, l really enjoyed the paint job on the little 1:144 l just finished.
Got the 1:144 Berkut in now Skyhiker 👍
1 3 March, 22:03

Mr D, It's unfortunate the crazy times we are living in. l bought my Zvezda kit on Kleinanzeigen when I bought someone's entire stash so it only cost me 5 euros. Sometimes you can still find good deals online.
3 March, 22:25

The Flankers really have very elegant and sleek designs. For jets they're beautiful.
1 5 March, 12:14

Lol, well the kit engines were just so wrong they need some adjustments.
1 5 March, 15:37

After priming the model and improving the engine details I spent most of the day mixing colors trying to find the correct tones for this plane. Eventually I figured it out.
1 5 March, 19:02

What colour scheme are you going for ?
The tricolour blue's and Gray?
Like the extra exhaust details.....will be much better now.👍👍
1 5 March, 20:20

Mr D, yes I am re-creating one of the first Su-30s delivered, so it has blues and grey. It is not as vibrant as the later planes. I had to mix a few colors to get an accurate color tone. I posted a photo of the paint test. Good Russian colors are hard to find and I don't use laquers anymore for health reasons. If it doesn't clean up with water or alcohol I prefer not to use it.
1 5 March, 20:45

You going for the Vallejo Model Air 71.334, 71.335 and 71.337 or similar blues and grey?
5 March, 20:49

I'm not sure. I don't normally use Vallejo because they're too rubbery, tough to spray and tend not to sand well. They do brush on quite nicely though. I posted an image of the color test. I generally use AK 3rd generation because of their accurate colors or Aquaous because they are just great paints that sand well. I do have a decent amount of laquers and enamels but I try not to use them to avoid the chemicals.
5 March, 21:03

Yeah, those colors are pretty close. Nice job on the 27. How did the paint work out for you? Like I said I pretty much gave up on Vallejo.
1 5 March, 21:12

Melf Boyens, it's good to hear you haven't had any issues with Zvezda kits since I have an awful lot of Russian planes to build and most of the kits are from Russia or Ukraine. I assume the problem I was experiencing was a reaction to the debonder. I just have to remember to wear a mask and gloves more often.
5 March, 21:31

I hear that a lot about Vallejo and they work for me. The mecha primer is awful, but the colors are different. I think most of the problems come from differences in humidity and temperature, they seem to be sensitive on that or people overthin them because everywhere are the laquer thinning ratios mentioned, wthout context. I go for unthinned Model Air or only a drop of thinner and slightly under 25psi. But most of my tip dry and clogging problems went away after I switched to the H&S Evolution '24 and shaking the paint with a vortex mixer for ~30 - 40s.
5 March, 21:54

A vortex mixer is a good idea. I hadn't thought of that. I got a H&S Infinity Two in One this Christmas. With the biggest needle it might work but the 0.15 would probably be too small for Vallejo. I might try them out again with my cheap GANZTON airbrush first beforehand.
1 6 March, 00:29

Hi Skyhiker, I've recently been using lCM water based paints, l mixed some decent Su-30 colours for my latest build from ICM, they dry nice and hard too, need alot of thinning as they are very thick.
Your right.... Health first 😃👍
6 March, 17:22

I didn't know ICM made paints. Aren't they from Ukraine? I'll have to keep my eyes open for them. Ok I see they have a whole range:
3004 Palette of 80 colors, ICM , Acrylic, 80x 12ml
6 March, 21:01

Some nice progress 👍👍 can see some nice shading there,
Yes they are from Ukrainia, they have definitely helped me out with colour matching, l first used them on my Yak3 as they did a soviet aviation pack.
Good luck on next paint stage 😀👍
8 March, 17:52

Mr. D, I did add panel shading on this one, although I always try to layer over it enough to make it as subtle as possible. You would never find a real plane that has anything that looks like panel shading. Most people overdo this technique, but I think if you blend it in enough it can add some depth to the model without looking too strange.
1 8 March, 21:23

A bit more painting done in between my wife walking in every 10 minutes.
1 9 March, 16:53

Looks great 👍. good job on paint 👏
I'm really glad l added a SU-30 to my collection as they look fantastic on Display.
Good luck on the next steps 👍
11 March, 11:11

Well I'm not convinced with the colors, the hue of the dark blue is too cyan colored. I may need to go buy some other paint.
11 March, 13:03

I went and bought a bunch of paint only to come home to find out they are all colors that don't look like the real thing. I tried Vallejo air and Hataka acrylics. I even bought a few 3rd generation general colors to see if I could get close since they don't make Russian colors. But all to no avail. I guess I will have to mix my own. At least I know I can mix a decent color if I have the proper primary base.
11 March, 20:19

I'm not sure if you can see the difference but I adjusted the blue to a more accurate hue. I hate mixing my own colors because it takes time that I'd rather spend building. When you have to mix the same color later, even if you write down the formula the colors are always a little bit different and you have to spend time adjusting them. This is because the drops from the bottle aren't exactly the same amount every time and the paint isn't always mixed well enough inside the bottle. But sometimes there just isn't any choice. I was surprised how off some of the colors I bought as Flanker sets were. They worked together as a set but they didn't look anything like the real jets and simply weren't realistic.
12 March, 12:18

The decals are pretty yellowed and not accurate. I'm going to have to paint parts to make it presentable.
12 March, 15:11

Skyhiker, I've been spending a ton of time on various YouTube sites, painting minis, visiting artists' sites, etc., trying to learn as much as I can. One suggestion coming from an artist's site is that when you mix your own paint, mix enough and then put it in a container so that you have some for later, like an empty paint jar. I wish I had known this for the Memphis Belle as I had to mix paints repeatedly, and I ended up with a patchwork of colours as I repeatedly tried to reproduce the same colour.
12 March, 17:05

I usually mix enough paint for the build and store it in jars but if I ever need to make repairs after its built, say if it gets scratched or something breaks off, I have to remix the paint because the paints usually dry out after a while. It's not a problem, but I just don't like doing it.
1 12 March, 20:21

It looks right now l think, I've looked at some early SU-30 photos and l think your there now.
I find colour go a little darker after the clear coat .
Nice job 👍👏
12 March, 22:58

Today was put a layer of paint on.. wait forever watching paint dry... Put another layer on... Wait and repeat.
1 13 March, 19:27

Several of the photos I have looked at have similar colors to the Hataka paints. Interesting this plane seems to have been repainted with more vibrant colors at some point. Colors aren't standardized in Russia like other air forces, hence the confusion.
15 March, 12:58

I will try using the Hataka colors for the SU-27UB that I have in my stash when I build it.
1 15 March, 13:00

Nice complexity on the engines, reminds me of my Su-30SM when I spent two weeks just to paint the engines 😆
16 March, 21:50

The engines sort of worked but I think after the weathering they will look even better. Using acrylic for this kind of job is all new to me. I need to use water based paints from now on unless absolutely necessary.
1 16 March, 21:56

I bought an air quality monitor and find that it inspires me to wear my mask more often.
1 16 March, 22:27

Thanks. I wasn't sure if I could get the acrylics to work but it seems like it sort of did.
19 March, 20:06

The Engine,s turned out very well,... They look accurate 👍 l only used acrylic's ...there are some great acrylic products out there.
Looking good 👍👍
19 March, 20:35

I used Aqueous silver H8 as a base and mixed different colors into it with other acrylics. I find Aqueous to be one of the best water based paints. But if you need a chrome finish then you have to go with enamel such as Xtreme metal or a lacquer like Alclad II metal
1 19 March, 22:48

I understand that there are some powders that you can rub on to make a high shine metal finish. I'd like to try those out some day.
1 19 March, 22:59

I'm always surprised on how long it takes me to finish a model. This one is coming close to the end.
1 5 April, 16:45

It's turning out very well , it takes time to get them right. the SU-30 is definitely worth the time as it's a great display piece.
Looking nice 😉👍

looking forward to seeing more of this project👍.my uncle(5th SF) was in country just after TET and one of the few things he ever... spoke of more than once, was about riding on top of a M113 that rolled over a mine
12 October 2024, 18:07

Thank you Mona, that must have been a terrifying experience. The idea would be a fortified position in the Mekong Delta. I'm planning to build a sandback bunker and a piece of ricefield. The M113's will be stationary in a defensive position. Soldiers will be relaxed not knowing what is coming. But the layout is still evolving. Haven't decide the size of the groundwork yet. I'll be starting the diorama base soon... Will be continued 😉
13 October 2024, 08:21

Thank you Neuling, Spanjaard and Kim! I'm starting the diobase this week!

Looking good Mathias. Lovely work on the M113's. What did you use as the 50 cal casings?

Thanks Mr James, I used simply the copper of an electric wire. An idea I got from lasercreationworld. It is a bit too narrow, but the overal impression works I think.

OMG - I'm so glad I saw this. The M113s are simply stunning! The Dio is really shaping up to be a killer as well - don't know how you havent\'t gone crazy building the palm leaves, but wow!!!!
1 February, 14:53

@CaptGPF, thanks man! I cheated a bit on the palmleaves. I lasercutter the leafs in a thermoplast sheet, but there is still a lot of finalising to do offcourse. I don't think this method has been tried before... Also thank you Rui!
1 February, 21:53

cheated? i certainly disagree. you did a great use of what you have at hand. why should you buy the same stuff as aftermarket if you can make your own? 😉 great job
1 1 February, 22:21

Totally agree with Spanjaard - it's not cheating if you make it yourself. Making kits doesn't mean you have to suffer if a more efficient way can be used!
2 February, 16:10

Thanks for the approval guys! Very excited to see the end result
2 February, 18:44

Looking excellent so far. The palm trees are the most realistically modelled ones I've seen.

Nice pick! I can't imagine they sell this kit in UK. It is one of those kits commonly seen in stores near schools in China. When I was a kid, I usually spent my pocket money of the week and enjoyed them during the weekend.
2 28 February, 01:05

Hi Tianyi 👍
We can purchase them on eBay and Alibaba, some model shops stock Minihobby models, they are a sister company to Trumpeter.
They are fun inexpensive little kits ...this is my 5th one.... they can have big gaps sometimes but l enjoy making-good
Thanks for your interest 😃👍

Another interesting one. Indeed, Mig-25 or Mig-31 are so big compared with other jet fighters. Following.

Some progress here,
-Painted the chassis with black.
-I have moved all the parts from the sprues and made all the necessary dry fits.
-Primed all parts with Mr surfacer grey except the wheels which were primed with Mr surfacer pink in order to painte them later with red color.
-Also primed with gloss black all the parts which are going to be painted with alclad chrome.
-In the end I painted with buff the wooden floor in order to use later oils for realistic wood result.
24 April 2024, 17:53

Today works:
-Engine done!
-Wheels done!
-Painted first coat of pale green gunze at the cabin.
29 April 2024, 18:53

Thank you very much for your comment, soon will post an update with the wooden floor-parts on the truck .
3 May 2024, 18:41

Some progress here:
-Attatched the engine and the cargo parts to the chassis.
-Finished and fitted the cabin to the chassis.Fortunately no fitting issues were found!
-Painted the wheels with tamiya white instead of using the kit's decals.
-Finished the wooden floor-I used oils raw umber and raw sienna and then I sprayed a thin coat of clear orange.
-Managed to close the engine,it was tricky enough to get all the parts together with no fitting issues.
So I can say that the contsruction has almost finished-small details are going to be fitted at the end such as bumbers-door handles-licence plates-whipers and of course the surfboard.
I will leave the kit to rest for a couple of days and then I am going to spray gloss varnish.
Thank you!
18 May 2024, 17:49

Back to bench to this unfinished project
-Two coats of Super clear III varnish by Gunze
-Decals
-One coat of Super clear III varnish again
Polishing procedure with Tamiya polishing compounds will follow!
24 March, 06:40

Final touches for today:
-Polishing procedure with tamiya polishing compounds
-Added bumpers, windshield wipers, mirror, lights, licence plates and wheels
-Added some Tamiya panel liner black
-Polished the whole body with tamiya wax
Thank you for watching and stay tuned for final photos!

Another aircraft to add to my Japanese WW2 stable. Unfortunately, this one is an old tool but hopefully I can do it justice. 🙂
28 October 2024, 19:33

I've finally made a start on this monster of an aeroplane. The insides have been painted with Vallejo Model Air Aotake Green. Cockpit now completed as is the cockpit controls. Next will be inserting and masking all of the transparencies before I can put the fuselage together. 🙂
Welcome Mark, Stephen & Finn. I hope you enjoy the build. 👍
Many thanks mates for your interest and likes Franck D, Lukasz G, Moreno B, Mark S, Stephen L, Rafael, Djordje N & Piettro DA. 👍
24 January, 17:00

Very nice Guy 👍 great subjects.... definitely be popular this one.
What length is that fuselage roughly??
👀
1 24 January, 19:32

How are you finding Vallejo to spray? I switched to AKRC and stuck with Tamiya, after trial and error with other Acrylics. Which is why I shaved my head to stop me tearing my hair out. 🥸🤟😳🤘🥸
1 24 January, 19:36

@Mark
I've used Vallejo quite a lot, and I'm mainly using AK and ICM lately.
Paint has been a big learning curve that I'm still on.
I'm found that from one paint to the next and from one colour to the next the behaviour of the paint change's. White's, greys need much more thinning ....alot of it seems to be all about the thinning raschio for that particular paint, water will thin Vallejo...but it doesn't get it out the gun/airbrush well.
Mr leveling thinner is a good go-to and always pays to experiment with small amount before job to find nice mix.
I've lost few hairs 🫣 and blamed the brush, changed the needle, pressure...all the time it was thinning right.😤.
1 24 January, 21:30

Mr D. Yep, went down that route paint to thinner ratio, needle size, air pressure the "new" acrylics. When it came to detail work especially on Luftwaffe mottling they just don't cut the mustard. I prefer the hybrids Tamiya, AKRC don't smell as much as lacquers (keeps Our Lass of me back) and do the job. Although AKRC may have tweaked the formula a bit. I'll keep the Vallejo's for figure and brush work. Since I came back to the hobby and at 63 the less hassle the better. 🤘🥸🤟
2 25 January, 05:36

Internal windows added and then cockpit and cockpit controls added after a lot of hassle getting the alignment correct. Finally, fuselage put together. 🙂
Welcome along for the ride Ben, Mr D, Mark, Thomas & Nicolas. 👍
Mark, I mainly use Vallejo Model Air for airbrushing. I find it OK and, in the main, don't need to thin it. Vallejo Model Color is a different proposition. I tend to use that for brush work. I also use some Hataka paints for airbrushing. Most of those need a little thinning (with Hataka thinners, I find best). 👍
Mr D, the fuselage is 33.5 cm long and the wingspan 55.35 cm. 👍

Thanks Stephen for the comment. I agree! I'm going to have to find somewhere to put this once completed! 👍

Beautiful plane, I'm hoping Hasegawa will rleease a new mould as they did with the Emily. Great start on this venerable kit!
1 22 February, 16:44

Upper side of fuselage painted Vallejo Model Air IJN Deep Dark Green. 🙂
Many thanks Paul for your kind comment. I hope Hasegawa produce a new tool for this aircraft, this one is pretty dated and of course raised panels. 👍
26 February, 16:46

Wings and tail plane have had primer & pre-shading added. 🙂
Thanks for the encouragement Mr D, I appreciate it, it's going slowly but steadily. 🙂

While being on holidays last week I came across this kit in the local hobby store.
I was very happy to get it, but disappointment appeared when I looked at it more closely back home - Hasegawa kit with raised panel lines! 😮
So, I decided to give it a quick go, no rescribing included.
6 March, 20:18

Hi Łukasz! I had this kit, but I changed it when the Platz one came out. I'm sure this Hasegawa one will have a magnificent finish in your hands.
Nice cockpit 👍
7 March, 19:33

Thx, I believe Platz is way better, but after bringing it 9000kms back home, I decided to stop hunting for Platz, it's a very rare sight!
7 March, 21:06

Welcome mates!
Of course I wouldn't be myself if I haven't started adding some handmade details.
I try to restrict it to cockpit only so far 😄
I plan to start priming next.
12 March, 19:50

Wow, a model of an aircraft I haven't heard of! Will it be red and white like the photo?
13 March, 21:19

Love it and that camo will be interesting. Every time when I hear Fuji I think film cameras hah
1 14 March, 04:23

Welcome to my little white and red project.
Tomorrow I'm off for Bytom Scale Modelling Festival, but I hope to spray something on Sunday.
2 14 March, 15:45

Herzlich wilkommen JK 👍
I managed to spray some pink this evening, enjoy 🙂
15 March, 21:15

The plan was to highlight the raised panel lines with a pencil and wash the recessed ones with dark gray marker and then to cover everything in white until they're slightly visible.
I have the feeling my cunning plan worked so far.
18 March, 19:59

Clever trick with the pencil, I have a set of AK acrylic pencils, and I will definitely try them.
1 18 March, 20:52

Started decalling and well the decals' fit is poor if not worse- see the pics.
Luckily Signal Red marker by AK is almost the same shade of red. And the orange will be corrected using AK orange marker too.

@Mr D – Thanks a lot! The 1/72 version sounds like a great build; I'm sure it'll look fantastic when you get started, best of luck with yours as well! Please share updates, would love to see how it turns out. 👍

Great project, coming along nicely.... Now don't spray out your pre-shading like l did on my SU-30 🙄🤣.
Nice work 👍👍
1 18 February, 18:55

Thanks gents!
Mr D's comment really made me pay attention to the pre-shading on the second layer, kudos to him. That made me think of a solution to keep the pre-shading so I ended up with this solution. Will keep the build updated, my target is to finish it by Sunday 🙂
3 27 February, 18:04

That worked out 👍👍 Great, Nice build....it's really going to benefit from the shading you pulled off here.
Enjoying following as it will help when l start my 1:72 version.

2 27 February, 19:31

I really like this phase of painting! Seeing the seams disappear and the strength of the kit being revealed!
3 27 February, 22:33

Wanted to finish the Mi-8 by today, but there are always plenty of details that pop-up and require attention. Anyway since it's close to completion, I decided to spend more time and do it in a relaxed fashion. Thanks Mr.D and Marlin. @Mr. D I want to build another Mi-8 on the Russian Blue-Gray camouflage, I think it looks awesome with the simple scheme as well: MRP-398 Gray Blue - Russian ..4,26,28,35 & Ka-52, MR.Paint Satin, Acrylic Lacquer, 30ml
2 2 March, 21:37

The double pre-shading did help indeed - looks really good already! 👍
Waiting for the wash and weathering!

2 17 March, 07:54

@Arnold thanks! this particular kit is very very good, worth the price. Only has a bit of challenges when fitting the canopy, but if you take your time and patience there, it all works very well.
@Rui many thanks!
2 17 March, 13:06

Thank you Sir @Desert Marlin. Yes this kit is huge but brings a ton of lessons with it.

🚁 Mi-8MT Complete! 🎉
After working on it since December 2024, I'm thrilled to finally call my 1:48 scale Mi-8MT finished! This is the Zvezda kit, and let me tell you—what a beast of a build. Easily one of the most complex and detailed projects I've ever tackled in over 30 years of modeling.
The level of detail I managed to realize in this one has me super satisfied—from the rotor assembly to the cockpit, every step was both a challenge and a joy. Definitely one for the books, and probably the best and most involved build I've ever completed.
Hope you enjoy the photos as much as I enjoyed building it! 🫡☺️😃

Ricardo, are you satisfied with the tones of the MPR colors? These early Flankers seem to be greyer than the more vibrant blues that came later. I am working on a SU-30 that has the same color scheme but I have to find an acrylic equivalent for the colors.

11 August 2022, 17:35

It seems so, Andy. I hope he can pick up the project before the GB ends. I have several projects stopped for not being able to attend to them now, such as the DH.88 or the U-2. But they will all come to an end, sooner or later.
The last thing I did was strip the paint to repaint due to the harsh orange peel effect the yellow had when I put on the sand colored base coat. It is not appreciated in the pics, but that was not pleasing to the eye.
Simon, thanks for your comment 🙂

Проект: Hawk Mark IX
14 31 March, 19:49

Just picked up the 15" 1/48 Space 1999 Hawk Mk IX Interceptor. Looks to be a very nice kit. Pleasantly surprised at the details, nice heavy plastic. I really wanted a big one of these, and this is the largest I could afford, so far it's well worth the money. Plus I bought it straight from the Gerry Anderson site, as it was cheaper than anywhere else. Thinking about scratching a cockpit interior for it, although in the show it didn't have one. Not sure what version I'll do, pre production, from the episode, or a custom version. But it'll be a fun build.
31 March, 19:55

That's it for today, just basic construction of engine rocket boosters, sponson rockets and painted the inside black, can't be bothered to scratch an interior this time, I'll tint the windows yellow, for a moody 70s look.
1 April, 13:57

Where I'm at so far, added the cockpit glass, slightly tinted. I'm painting anti flash black around the cockpit windows, as this seems logical.
3 April, 01:25

That's me done for today, built and painted the Hawk's Nuclear reactor chamber and main booster rocket.
3 April, 14:21

I lied, oddly for me I'm a bit addicted to this one. Fun so far, but now I need a break, not bothered about the obvious seam lines down the lower fuel tanks, as they get covered up by the pannier sponson booster rockets. more tomorrow.
3 April, 17:51

Thanks for the Like on my attempt at this Ian. Your's is shaping up to be way better than mine was (nothing new there 😁). Looking forward to see how you tackle the curve on the Orange section on the nose.
4 April, 18:07

Added fuel pipework and thruster fuel supply to the underneath, and painted the basic colours for the front of the hull, and the cockpit. I'm painting the anti-glare in front of the cockpit, as without it the pilots would be blind in space, plus I think it looks better. Getting there.
5 April, 18:20

Gorgeous! Did you use any masking at all on the Orange? Or, is your hand so steady to paint those curves that cleanly 😯
5 April, 18:33

Yeah Gareth, just painted it by hand with a brush, same as they did on the filming miniature.

I have built several of these cool Radar Frescos, but this old model is a very tricky one to build correctly. Have fun and I am sure you will do a great job!
11 January, 07:09

Tricky model?
Correct dimensions, fine and many details, discreet engraving, colorful and usable decals, I really don't know what you mean, Thomas.
Good luck, Chris.
11 January, 08:53

Please don't scare me. 😉 But I'm used to making old kits. Not possible - is not possible!
Just lay back, grab beer and chips and watch me struggling. 🙂
12 January, 01:45

I've built the old KP MiG-15UTI and Su-7. In both cases for some reason the cockpit doesn't go together like the instructions, so fit stuff before gluing. The parts count is low. The surface detailing is nice. The fit is indifferent.
1 12 January, 02:53

Strange. I built the cockpit as in the instruction. Fits well. When dried, the instruments panel will be next.
14 January, 22:26

Finished this kit. The canopy is an awful mess and I would call it "milky". The rivets are very present. The best way for me is to visit the final kit from a distance of 1 m. Then it looks great. The kit seems to be from 1974 as this is the boxart. And I did use the decals from the box: The Vallejo Aluminium was airbrushed with gloss varnish, then the decals with MicroSet and microSol. Afterwards satin varnish over all.
3 April, 23:49

It's very nostalgic for me. This model reminds me of my modelling beginnings. 😉
1 4 April, 07:33

Very nice. I am with Ludvik, very nostalgic. The quality we were ok with in those days 😅…
1 4 April, 14:45

Congratulations on finishing this one. I think it looks good. I've got this kit. Looks like I will have to re-revit it when I get around to making it. These old kits are a real challenge, especially when they are bare metal.
