I am curious to see your choice for the level of weathering 🙂 So far all the photos of the HAF Rafales show them rather clean 🙂

Looking forward seeing this build as I have several of your project aftermarket bits too. It seems a lot of blending of the BAM parts is required, correct?

Nice color! 👍 Is it correct that Greece opted for a darker shade of grey than the original French color?

Thank you gentlemen for your kind words. For a HAF Rafale you need almost all the BAM resins like the vents on the vertical fin, new wingtip mica launchers, new HUD, some extra RAM panels, replace the engine intakes etc. The grey camo is really confusing due to dramatic changes according the lighting. So in order to be "correct" i did my own mix of XF-54 Dark Sea Grey with H-308 in 70:30 respectively. You can use also MRP-279 (FS36293)

Amazing results, great looking Rafale! 👍
And all the aftermarket payed out very well - good to know for my own kit.

... well, may I serve some drinks? Chips? Sweets? Have fun watching my troubles.
The first problems arose today when I tried to install the frames. There are no markings or reference points for this. So it was a case of guessing and sanding. And then I forgot to take a photo of it... It'll come.

I added some pics before I will glue the fuselage together. So you can see, it fits pretty well. There are tiny little pins and holes, some of them I had to remove for better fitting. Even the big part from the wing fits very neatly.
This is not my first Williams-kit, I built the Curtiss Commando, the Martin B-10 and the Northrop Gamma. I never had an issue with those kits. The instruction sheet is another theme: The pictures are just a possibility what you can do and the rest is plain text. You cannot compare those old kits with new, modern ones that come together as LEGO 😉

A classic Tamiya kit from the 70s. As is usual excellent plastic from Tamiya regardless of age. Much was needed to fix small faults - but as my first kit after many years was perhaps a little too ambitious. Still, the experience was invaluable.
Mods include; interior scratched / gunner's sight channel cut and moved over - it was very wrong / fuel hatches added on hull side / hatch periscope scratched / missing periscopes added / tools modified and repositioned as per sources / some riveting and scribing attempted / gun barrel secure holes drilled / front hull travel lock completely scratched as it was very poor / headlight cable and port made / rear mud guard fender (with spring retainer) cut and repositioned / armour plates cut up and repositioned / small adjustments made on filler caps and tool clips / front fender wires added / verteidigungs cover replaced / barrel replaced from spares as too short

Basically I did from the fuel tanks back to the firewall. Nothing else can be seen but the hatches (just like the early Stugs) are much larger than most other vehicles.
One thing I will say - it would be much easier to do an interior for later kits as the sponsons are covered and the breach is included which is the hardest part to scratch

It is true that some parts of the kit are a little antiquated but the tyres are surprisingly advanced. Excellent tread pattern that I hope to be able to do justice with painting. The interior is very meh - a token gesture with no relation to reality. I hope I can make this a really nice little kit. I would highly recommend this for anyone new to hobby.

The new in- and exterior PE set from Eduard significantly enhances looks of the rear compartment where the bubble canopies are and the wingtips when the auxilliary floats are lowered. The rest - as Skyhiker said - will hardly be seen.
Very nice progress you present us here. Anxious to see how you will depict the black color, which was ash based, oft low quality and fast and extensivly washed off.

Thanks Markus, they seem indeed a bit fiddly…
Also, the instructions seem to suggest that they need to be installed during in subassembly of the complete rear fuselage.
I'm not quite there yet, but I think they can be mounted towards the end. I'm also thinking of glueing the front and rear fuselage halfs together on each side and close the whole thing, avoiding any misalignments between front and rear subassembly's that are suggested in the instructions.
Will need to do a lot of dry-fitting to check feasibility however, before committing to that approach. We'll see. 🙏🏻🙋🏼♂️

Good observation Patrick!
I had wondered why those indentations were there... But, in 1/72 there are no brakes in the kit and so no protusions for these on the inside of the fuselage halves. It means that the only contact point the Reskit exhaust has, is at the edge of the fuselage halves... which is probably not sufficient for a good "montage".
I took a quick look at the 1/48 instructions of the Hasegawa kit, and indeed there, you have the brakes and the areas on the inside of the fuselage - assuming here that Reskit designed the exhaust with the larger scales in mind, and simply resized that design for 1/72.
So, I think that the approach I'm taking, with recuperating the part kit and re-use it as the inside mounting point for the exhaust will be the good one. I'm even thinking of drilling a hole in the middle of the exhaust back-end to make sure that they align correctly by means of a small rod.

it depends on type of paint etc. if acrylic, Isopropyl alcohol can work just fine. let it soak on it for a while and use an old toothbrush. if small parts just drop alcohol on them and use the toothbrush directly

use a discarded food container for example. for soaking and also for brushing (you do not want drops of alcohol mixed with paint flying around).
I buy the alcohol by the liter, 100% pure. can be used as thinner and cleaner. as thinner with Tamiya tends to make paints a bit more dull than tamiya thinner, but waaaaasy cheaper

I have had good experiences with oven cleaner. Put the component in a plastic bag and leave it to soak overnight, then you can remove the paint the next morning with a stiff brush or toothbrush. No matter what you use, always check the compatibility with the base material beforehand. With aggressive agents, it can otherwise quickly happen that details are damaged or even the entire component dissolves.

That is very sage advice, Nicolas; I will check compatibility on a piece of the sprue before doing anything.

My impressions so far:
Lots of seamlines;
Some sink marks;
Clear instructions;
Parts clearly marked;
Parts fit not perfect, but not challenging. 🙂

I plan to build this car as sub-assemblies (chassis, engine and body/coachwork.
I have spend some time getting all the parts off that the chassis comprise of, stripped off the chrome of the specific parts and painted everything. While working on and painting the floor pan and radiator cover, I also painted the rest of the body panels.
That being said, lets build the chassis.

I used Tamiya Paint stripper. One of my wife's silk stockings to strain the small parts out and recovered most of the liquid. Beware, it stinks!

I hope to give an honest and clear report. You may call me a glutton for punishment because I have another model from this manufacturer in my stash 🙂

I hope it's another 1/12 scale classic race car Villiers but that's just me being selfish. 😂. I'll be here every step of the way.

Kyle, it is the Fiat Mefistofele in 1:12. I love the classic cars and 1:12 is my favourite scale.

Excellent!! The Mefistofele is maybe my favorite one. Love the look of that car. A somewhat local shop to me even has one on the shelf but for a price even higher than eBay! Lol. So, for now, I will live vicariously through others. Your 806 is looking really nice so far!!

Thank you Kyle, Bughunter and Guy for your kind words.
I am nearly finished with the chassis and found the front suspension a challenging. The project is time consuming but also very rewarding at the same time.

The first "modern" F1 car as we know them today. Low slung and Purpose built and with no riding mechanic. Fiats racing factory claimed it was capable of nearly 150 mph. A great subject to build a model of.

I made some progress today. The construction work on the chassis will be completed within the next few days. The parts for the engine has also been cleaned up, build in sub-assemblies and painted up.

Thank you for your kind words. I lost count how many times I have stripped the paint on the body. The end is in sight. In polishing the body shell I accidently broke off the "needle " that holds down the bonnet panels.

Very nice! Love the step by step photos and the details! And the wood grain looks amazing! I wonder how much of it will be visible when it's all put together. When I started this hobby, I would skip detailing hard to see parts in my kits, but have since started detailing everything…. I may have developed OCD because of this hobby….

WOW. ! My juices are flowing mate. What an exciting trip . !
Your descriptive texts have de mystified a most complex and detailed kit. 👍
I was never much of a fan of the Italian model makers, but with this, I could get my mojo back. 🙂
Almost $300.00 here in Aus, but from how you have presented it. Fully worth every penny and the time it would take.
I am sold. 👍 🙂

Nice step-by-step build, which makes it easy to follow. I don't think I will try this anytime soon, I already want something a little easier for my second model 🙂. Beautiful work on your part.

Très beau travail, tu sais ces kits Italeri sont des reboîtages de Protar, une marque de maquettes très approximatives, il y a toujours beaucoup d'inexactitudes et donc de travail. Ce sont des modèles qui se méritent, Bravo. 👍

Absolutely stunning model. For some reason, the black wire wheels really set off the car. Makes it look so much more purposeful.

Richard and Stephan, thank you for the time taken to comment and your kind words.
Richard, yes I also love the larger scale cars. I am happy to hear that you found this build report helpful. Two aspects of the Mefistofele that is now on the bench that I find is taxing on me is the engine wiring (which I finished) and the drive chain (in process). The end result makes it worthwhile. Italeri's offerings are not "shake and bake" kits 🙂

The roof was Evergreen styrene, brass wire, masking tape and some thin foam. I wasn't really very happy with it so it was put away. The hardtop was fine but it doesn't fit the theme so it's put away as well
