If you need to use putty, I suggest trying out Vallejo putty, which isn't toxic the way way Tamiya putty is afaik. Make sure to best clean up excess putty, or use masking tape, to avoid putty going hard in places that would require more cleanup.

A sanding sponge can be cut with scissors into smaller bits, to get in between details.

Yes, it will need some filling and sanding to the joints. I usually use Humbrol filler thinned with liquid poly and applied between masking tape with a cocktail stick and sanded with sanding sponges. I will try the Vallejo putty next time I am shopping 😀

George, this particular instance of the kit is new but the moulds are indeed over 50 years old. This one is pretty good actually. The only problem is that there is no glazing because the moulds are lost.

Guy, the kit is very good. I can't recall any fit problems and there was very little flash. There are plenty of VERY small parts so beware the carpet monster. It's sometimes slightly tricky to figure out what goes with which option of two.
There are some internal parts that I don't quite see the point of, given there is no real view of the interior, including shells. The tracks are the rubber band variety which was fine for my first tank. It was a fun build. If I was bothered about the crew, a better aftermarket set would be a good option but I didn't want to ramp up the cost.
My next tank is a 1/48 Tamiya Challenger II so I will be interested to compare the scale and the kits.

I really must learn to be patient. I didn't leave the primer long enough to cure so when I tried to rub down the filled bits, it went down to the red plastic and I have more filling to do. So, re-primed and leaving it 24 hours this time.

There I am the absolute oposite. "mhh - the acrylic paint is drying for 6 days now - better give it one more day just to be on the safe side".
