Wood with Oils

Album image #1
Undercoat of Vajello Pale Sand 70.837... Sealed with VMS Satin Varnish...

Album image #2
Pale Sand then oils over the top... Oils were allowed to dry a little before removing them with a tattered old brush...

Album image #3
Best colours were the browns and dark rust... The red looks OK but could be muted with brown though...

Album image #4
From left to right ABT502 Oils... Dark Brick Red, Dark Rust, Burnt Umber, Raw Umber, Basic Earth and German Orche...

Album image #5
And applied to a Test Bed Model... I used a combination of Pale Sand,Light Mud and Silver Grey from Vajello as Undercoats... Definitely the difference between Undercoats on this side... Basic Earth Oil Paint was overcoated...

Album image #6
Difference in Undercoats not as noticeable... Burnt Umber Oil paint overcoats on this side...

Album image #7
With a little more practice this is definitely a viable method to imitate timber...

Yeah mate... I'm just letting the oils dry for a day... Will put a clear over it when I get the chance... But looks pretty realistic already... I have a GS Truck with a timber tray so I was curious if I could employ this technique then chip the camo scheme over it...

Album info

LPJ Models had an awesome video on recreating timber using a very simple technique... A light tan or sand coloured acrylic as an Undercoat is painted on the substrate... Then various brown oils were painted over the top in a fairly heavy coat... The oils were allowed to flash off after 10mins then with a tattered, dry short, stiff bristled brush, the oils are removed by dragging it across the paint... Brush was cleaned on a paper towel after each stroke... For more variation the brush was dampened with white spirit and again dragged over the surface...
Tamiya clear colours Clear Yellow, Clear Orange, Clear Red and Clear Blues are then used as a sealer and filter in one enhancing the richness...
