These are the pictures that I used as a base for my fantasy scheme. I knew the blue, red and white tail would be hard to get right so I decided to give that a go. It did leak a bit, but it came out better than I expected...
I used a can of Hycote primer as usual, I think it's great and I know how to use it, so I wanted a good base to start from. The interior colours are MIG zinc chromate yellow and green, and I used an acrylic MIG wash to add some dirt.
This is MIG GB olive drab, but I think it's close enough to what I wanted. I made a few rules before I started, mainly about not worrying about the things I got wrong, and not going back to 'fix' them, but just note them and work out how to avoid going wrong in future
For the underside I used Vallejo sky grey. I realised quickly that you need to be careful how you thin the paint as the Vallejo is very different from the MIG in density etc. All in all I think it looks OK.
Most of the decals I used are Eduard, from the Bell X-1 (a 1:48 scale kit I know, but a very small plane) and a Wildcat. I used a few from an Arma Hobby Airacobra kit as well
The finished plane. Plenty of mistakes as usual, but it turned out a lot better than I thought! The airbrush is fun and I can see with practice I could get results, but cleaning it is such a pain!
I think I did a better job of the underside as usual, but this time I think I did a better job of the top than normal. I don't know if that is the airbrush or just me improving.
David Goodchild Thanks gorby! Thanks Dave, I will! It was fun to just use my imagination too...

Album info
I've been making models for nearly 2 years now, and I tried about a year ago to start using an airbrush and gave up in disgust at myself. I saw a video on YT a while back about an even cheaper model, so decided to have another go. I got a few of the recent Aldi special kits and after seeing a picture of a few early 1940's American planes I decided to have a go. I had a load of USAF decals from other planes so I used them to kind of replicate what I wanted, but it is all totally anachronistic and nonsense. Nevertheless, I learned a lot and I'm pleased with how it's gone so far, so I am putting some photos here as a record.
