A6M2 zero in-flight and on the deck
plastic parts for the first zero
details are simply amazing. if fit is as good this will be a pleasure to build
brengun PE seems simple perfect for it.
mass production. never had 5 models in the bench before 😄 😄
painted added PE side panels, and added some color touches after the wash
seats, stick and pedals. only the belts need to be added now
here comes the belts.
detals can be seen after it is closed. left panel looks really far from its correct place, but the picture is "a few" times bigger than the reality. primer also looks very uneven. looks good in reality, but eventually i decided to remove it. a bit too much handling, better to do it correctly when they are ready for it
now they are starting to look like Zeros
primer was removed after this picture.
Nice to see that the cockpit details can still be seen. but with closed cockpits... maybe not that much
Nice to see that the cockpit details can still be seen. but with closed cockpits... maybe not that much
instrument panel
would it be possible to see the details with closed cockpit? they are really thin (as they should in this scale). I am going to cut them, well not with that old blade. mini-saw will be the choice
all but one will have make open cockpits. a bit of (scary) surgery and it is done
yeah, that is what i was after. dry run of the chopped cockpit looks ok and details can be seen clearly again
Primer is now gone. (need to blow all those fibres before i paint it)

masking
lost the tiny part at the bottom of the cooling, so i had to make one. using blue stuff for the first time
done with milliput, not bad (remember that the piece is about 3-4 millimiters)
maybe next time i will try with milliput super fine. i need to get some first.
maybe next time i will try with milliput super fine. i need to get some first.
but Super Sculpey seem to work better. it has the problem that you need to remove it from the mould when it is soft to bake it for a while.... but the detail is better
dry fit. it is not perfect, but it is ok, part broke in two later, that actually helped getting it to fit better.
milliput one, ok, but not this time.
compared with the original. can be improved, but it will be ok. and that will be on the carrier deck, so will be impossible to see...
closed cowling kinds of.... i do not like it. so i am going to something i may regret....
cowling open
i need to flatten a bit those panels. but all in all, it is not that bad
Light coat of primer
Only one of them will have this colour, training scheme for the A6M2
And of course, the missing piece appeared after the replacement was finished and even glued.... I manage to remove it and glue the original. Quite some time spent on making the replacement to end up binning it ( it broke when I removed it). Lessons learnt about duplicating parts that will be valuable in the future
Manual masking of the close cockpit.... and I have 5 more zeros....
Masked, black primer, and then white (I want the inside black, not white). Zoom is merciless in showing where the manual masks were not 100% correct, and where I actually did forget to mask.... (last bit was not done at all!)
And now orange
Just to give an idea of the real size....
not perfect , but it looks ok without zoom....
Need to correct missing mask etc
Black from the inside, although I see some orange....
Checking if color is matching the rest
My first test of home made masks (just normal paper) done in inkscape and cut with the Cameo Silhouette Portrait 3. Masking of the other zeros will NOT be done like the first.....
Decals done. Shelfoddity decals are very, very thin. Love it
The other zeros will not be flying so I need to remove those "boxes" to use details from Brengun
"Box" gone
Flory models panel wash, black
Well covers on, panel wash and a some thin layers of future. I think panel lines look great. Detail in Sweet kits is simply amazing
and now i see that i need to add the wash in the landing gear covers..... and some decals as well.

and now the orange training zero is completed. i will paint one of the others orange as well. It looks yellow here...
the panel line detail of this model is probably the best i have ever seen. and in 1/144 it simply stunning. a panel wash makes it look incredible.
i like the open cooling

I was expecting you 🙂.
There is PE too in the 262 and the spitfire too, but there is more here....and six of them!

I'm keen to see what you do here. I barely started mine, so I want to steal all your good ideas. The sweet kits are... sweet, aren't they?

Very much. Only Platz can be considered better. Eduard ones are ok, although engraved detail is too deep for that scale.

Welcome Daniel, but it may take a while.... The others (started already in this project) will be finished before I can start the zeros

Yep! For PE parts on 1/144 scale you'll likely need an electron microscope though. 😉

Thanks guys, but no microscope. Some magnification was used to check if belts were painted ok, but not much more. But my eyes are not as good as they used to 😛

That surgery on the cowling flaps may have given you nightmares, but it looks great.

thanks David. let's wait until it is painted. worse case scenario, they will have a lot more "used" look than intended 😄 but i hope all will be good

Yeah, I agree with Peter (it happens sometimes). That panel lining has me studying the pics closely. So clean.

thanks Peter and Greg, but to be honest a good deal of the merit has to go to Sweet. the panel lines in this model are the best i ever seen, specially in this scale. comparing it with my P38 from Minicraft, there is a world of difference in quality. Platz and Eduard (in that order) are good but not as good as this one.
i just added a good amount of florymodels black clay wash, let it dry, remove with a piece of kitchen paper, and it is done.
of course, you need to use very thin layers of paint, or those beautiful panel lines will easily disappear. and the decals from Shelf Odity for this particula version are quite good too.

talking about decals.... I see that I forgot to add the tiny red bands on the tip of the propeller blades!
and also did not paint the exhaust in burnt metal.

hi Petar. I simply took tamiya masking tape (sheets, not tape, but it is the same material) and cut the pieces to the right size, by hand. once all in place, just painted it and removed the masking. bit of retouching was needed. manual masking is a bit time consuming for this scale, but for the other six zeros I have on my bench, I will do them with a Silhouette Portrait 3 I got after doing the first zero. I have done some testing, but i do not have the final masks yet. of course, masks can be purchased for many models, but i like to do things my own way 😛

Album info
initially i just wanted one zero in-flight for my "flying circus" project... but it got a bit out of hand, and it will be followed (eventually) for several more in deck of a carrier in December 1941....
after getting my hands on the first Sweet kit... I needed to get more. the detail is simply exquisite.... and with Brengun PE it will be something really nice (or a total disaster)
