Happy New Year to all of you!

Well, what better to do to on a rainy and stormy New Years Day than to start a new project!

I choose Starling Models River Class Corvette in scale 1/350. The excellent and well packed kit comes in a stiff card board box with all small parts separate packed. The casting is excellent, with just little flush. There are some minor mismatches in mould and some holes in the smaller parts they were not completely filled in the casting progress, but all in all nothing to be worried about. The kit comes with PE, brass parts for masts and gun barrels, a decal sheet and instructions. There is only one paint scheme required for HMS Nadder. If you want to built one of the other 150 River Class Frigates you have to check your resources.

I choose to build one of the Canadian River Class Frigates, HMCS Runnymede. Most of the Canadian Frigates were equipped with a 4 in twin mount fwd. instead of the single mount. They also had twin motor driven Oerlikons guns in the bridge wings and on a platform aft of the funnel and a different boat davit layout.

This is an easy modification to do, to cut out the davit supports and the gun tubs for the Oerlikon. The 4 in Mk. XVI comes from North Star Models.

All in all comes out nice and fit perfectly together, so I think to manage this, next to my Venomous until the first Model Show at the end of March.

Cheers, Christian

Glad to see you here Spanjaard 🙂
Well, once I got deeper and deeper into the RCN River I found out that there are a lot of more differences to a RN River. Different armament, different boat arrangement, slightly different bridge, etc. etc. so it took more research and time than I first thought. Although it is an excellent designed and manufactured kit, there are some minor topics. The framework port and starboard of the bridge wings does not fit correctly, so I decide to make it new from styrene. Furthermore there is a mistake in the instructions, Step 4 does not show the correct lenght of the mast. There is a correction available from Starling Models, you can find it here in my WIP or on Starling Models FB page. Anyhow about the correction I decide to make the mast from one piece without a topmast as shown in the instructions. So far so good, some way to go before I can start painting the model.

By the way, you'll find a tutorial for bending PE parts within this WIP. May it is helpful for the one and other.

You're welcome Peter!
Thx Lode, I do my very best🙂

Today I add the railing. Because I like the thickness and shape of the Flyhawk RN railing I replaced the railing provided with the kit PE.

Thank you Alistair and Potez452.

Indeed it is Alistair. I can highly recommend it!

I replaced the mast with a new one made of one piece of main mast. It works perfect and luckily I was able to remove the fragile HF/DF antenna from the old mast without any damage to it. According to reference photos I have added some extra details, like railings next to the 12pdr., a boom and a small davit as well as scratch build racks for Carley rafts. The main build is finished so far, now the paintwork can start!

Treehugger
What is the strategy for painting the model with the photo etch railings glued on? Is the deck color to be the same as the color for the railings? Or, would the railings have an inside color, and an outside color?

Haha, I have a buch of 1:350 model ships to build, I need to know. 😄

I haven't yet tried finishing my first ship model, as I am not sure how I would go about say masking things for having a darker color for the deck, and a lighter color for the ship hull.

Thx again Peter 🙂

Treehugger, I try to add and glue as many parts as possible to the hull and subassemblies. That depends on the basic structure of the kit. Usually the railing is on before I start the paintjob. The painting starts first with a pimer, second the basic colour, third the camouflage pattern. This will be done using an airbrush. The deck is painted afterwards by hand brush painting. In the end I paint the tensioning ropes in black gray and left only the stanchions in the basic hull colour. Take a look to photo 67 to 76 on my HMS Venomous WIP. That will explain it as well.

Cheers, Christian

Thank you Lode, I'm realy pleased you like and enjoy my work.

The lower hull and boot topping are painted in their final colour. The hull, upperworks and small parts are primed with gray primer. Now it should dry completely before I can add the white basic colour.

Spanjaard
looking at the size of your hand and the model, i see that pic 42 is almost real size in my screen..... well, what can say? stunning, as you get us used to.... but still stunned again 🙂 how you (or Lode) can build those details, without a drop of glue being visible or a PE slightly bended.....is amazing.

Thank you Spanjaard for your very kind words. Well, as mentioned before, most of it is patience to make it as best as possible. One reason why I need that much time to build and finish a model.
