Spanish I-16 post war training
Inventory
unusual start: the engine. Zero to nothing will be seen - so there's no need to clean up the cooling fins
tedious but worthwile: opening the exhausts
small improvement: alignment tabs for the wing fit
first dry fit - that's a quick one
engine painted - will mostly be hidden
exhausts painted and attached
port cockpit - addded some wires
control column ootb
with some refining
cables (copper wire) and cables (Uschi rigging) on the cockpit's starboard side
cockpit floor with some dirt
Sutton belts on the backrest
cockpit finished up
It's a black base!
masks applied
St. Andrew's cross base
some white for the roundels
Blended in - some weird paint creeps need to be touched up
resprayed the white - much better!
base for the roundels
yellow blend coat
red is on!
everything sealed up
black base for the camo
Close up - I tried to emphasize the I-16s features: fabric, metal and wood
Marble coat down
partially blended in (Tamiya XF-23 with some gloss and a lot of levelling thinner)
first try with Tamiya XF-59 - meh
way too much overspray
way too much overspray
second try with MRP RLM79 - much better
overall so far - this may take some time
salty Rata
after salt fading with Tamiya deck tan
up close
some weird frosting after the Alclad gloss
dark brown wash
dark grey wash
Finish line

I'm interested in the 'salting' technique in photo 44? I'm learning new things all the time and haven't seen this before. How does it work? What is the purpose? Thanks. Great kit btw 🙂

@Rui It would take to long to explain in text. Do a search on You Tube.

Rui, in a nutshell, you paint in one color, let dry, sprinkle some water and drop thick salt. Wait for it to dry, so salt will stick and not fly away when you airbrush some more paint. wait for it to dry, and then remove the salt. Then you will have some interesting pattern. But yes, do check the technique in YouTube 😉

Thanks for description. I just checked out some video and may try the technique on my next build. Funny thing is I never thought of using YouTube for tutorials and such. I'm not a big fan of big tech. Thanks again.

Just one little thing remaisn to add: make sure to do a test run!
I had some sort of "etching effect around the salt in my last build (lacquer over lacquer clear coat)😉
