Early Vietnam North American F-100D
![Album image #1 Album image #1](/albums/img/4/6/2/1337462-10501-89-720.jpg)
Starting point: another rendition of Hasegawa’s venerable F-100D and Wolfpack decals
![Album image #2 Album image #2](/albums/img/4/6/3/1337463-10501-33-720.jpg)
The kit lacks the outer pylons but I found a good match in the spares bin.
![Album image #3 Album image #3](/albums/img/4/6/1/1337461-10501-14-720.jpg)
First job: separating the slats
![Album image #4 Album image #4](/albums/img/4/6/5/1337465-10501-95-720.jpg)
Wings assembled and LE closed off. Removed wall between main wheel wells which isn't there.
![Album image #5 Album image #5](/albums/img/4/6/9/1337469-10501-98-720.jpg)
Decided to remove the ceiling of the main wheel wells as well to regain some depth
![Album image #6 Album image #6](/albums/img/4/7/8/1337478-10501-19-720.jpg)
Added tiny slat rails to the wing (of which I would loose a lot later on…)
![Album image #7 Album image #7](/albums/img/4/6/4/1337464-10501-85-720.jpg)
Time for the cockpit. Kit's seat and cockpit are pretty useless. Found a seat in the spares bin to use as a starting point for something better.
![Album image #8 Album image #8](/albums/img/4/6/6/1337466-10501-80-720.jpg)
Scratchbuilt a cockpit on the kit floor
![Album image #9 Album image #9](/albums/img/4/6/7/1337467-10501-33-720.jpg)
Cockpit starts to look like something, seat still needs to be finished
![Album image #10 Album image #10](/albums/img/4/6/8/1337468-10501-16-720.jpg)
Boxing in the nose wheel well
![Album image #11 Album image #11](/albums/img/4/7/2/1337472-10501-81-720.jpg)
building up an intake trunk from two flat pieces. Tricky operation, first attempt failed…
![Album image #12 Album image #12](/albums/img/4/7/1/1337471-10501-10-720.jpg)
… but second attempt succeeded. Added a bulkhead to blank it off.
![Album image #13 Album image #13](/albums/img/5/1/6/1337516-10501-72-720.jpg)
Cockpit finished, except for instrument panel decal.
![Album image #14 Album image #14](/albums/img/5/1/9/1337519-10501-94-720.jpg)
Used a piece of indeterminate tubing from the spares box and the petals from a leftover afterburner of my earlier Italeri F-100F to improve the exhaust.
![Album image #15 Album image #15](/albums/img/4/7/3/1337473-10501-85-720.jpg)
Fuselage assembly in progress. Before assembly, I rescribed the panel lines.
![Album image #16 Album image #16](/albums/img/4/7/4/1337474-10501-82-720.jpg)
Fuselage fit is OK, some seams to fill.
![Album image #17 Album image #17](/albums/img/4/7/7/1337477-10501-99-720.jpg)
Goofed up the lower nose area by filing away too merrily. Now need lots of filling to restore. Detailed the nose wheel well.
![Album image #18 Album image #18](/albums/img/4/7/5/1337475-10501-34-720.jpg)
Scratch-built the aft cockpit deck and testfitting the ejection seat
![Album image #19 Album image #19](/albums/img/4/8/3/1337483-10501-58-720.jpg)
Assembled wing and fuselage, added details to the wheel wells
![Album image #20 Album image #20](/albums/img/4/8/0/1337480-10501-40-720.jpg)
Cockpit ready and canopy masked. Time to close things up.
![Album image #21 Album image #21](/albums/img/4/8/2/1337482-10501-28-720.jpg)
Stabilizers normally sit tilted on the ground, so cut off the tabs and inserted them in the fuselage and pinned the stabilizers
![Album image #22 Album image #22](/albums/img/4/8/1/1337481-10501-43-720.jpg)
The kit only provides short 275 gallon wing tanks, but I need lengthened 335 gallon tanks. Modified the kit tanks using a suitable donor from the spares box
![Album image #23 Album image #23](/albums/img/4/8/5/1337485-10501-16-720.jpg)
Took quite some sanding and filling needed but looks OK under a coat of primer.
![Album image #24 Album image #24](/albums/img/4/8/7/1337487-10501-43-720.jpg)
Also added some detail to the pylons and ordnance. Rocket pods are from a Hasegawa set.
![Album image #25 Album image #25](/albums/img/4/8/4/1337484-10501-92-720.jpg)
And on to the painting phase! The first coat of primer revealed that I had some more work to do around the windscreen, which did not fit very well
![Album image #26 Album image #26](/albums/img/4/8/6/1337486-10501-85-720.jpg)
Time for the base coat. Took the easy way out and used a Tamiya Gloss Aluminum spray can. Actually a bit of challenge to prevent a too thick coat of paint…
![Album image #27 Album image #27](/albums/img/4/8/8/1337488-10501-79-720.jpg)
Masking in progress around the areas that will receive another color
![Album image #28 Album image #28](/albums/img/4/8/9/1337489-10501-67-720.jpg)
Sprayed wheel bays green olive drab which according to Internet sources is the best match for the F-100 wheel bay color
![Album image #29 Album image #29](/albums/img/5/1/8/1337518-10501-93-720.jpg)
Spraying the aft fuselage NMF areas with a 40/60 mix of Vallejo steel and aluminum.
![Album image #30 Album image #30](/albums/img/4/9/0/1337490-10501-57-720.jpg)
And the hard bit: the copperish discolorations at the back. Man, this is hard. Reaching the limits of my airbrush and airbrush skills here. Needed a paper mask to get the vertical pattern, no way I could achieve it freehand…
![Album image #31 Album image #31](/albums/img/4/9/1/1337491-10501-85-720.jpg)
Moment of truth, it all turned out somewhat lighter than I had intended and will need some more work with pastel powder. But happy enough with the result so far, at least it is not a disaster.
![Album image #32 Album image #32](/albums/img/4/9/2/1337492-10501-18-720.jpg)
Giving the panel lines a wash with black. One of the techniques I still have not yet fully mastered.
![Album image #33 Album image #33](/albums/img/4/9/3/1337493-10501-23-720.jpg)
Added studs below the slats since most of the too fragile slat tracks have broken off.
![Album image #34 Album image #34](/albums/img/4/9/4/1337494-10501-73-720.jpg)
And on to decaling! Subject comes from a very nice Wolfpak decal sheet I have already used for other kits.
![Album image #35 Album image #35](/albums/img/4/9/5/1337495-10501-67-720.jpg)
Almost done after three sessions, decided to add more stencils as the airframe still looked a bit too cleanish.
![Album image #36 Album image #36](/albums/img/4/9/6/1337496-10501-62-720.jpg)
Final weathering with pastel powders. I like this technique. It's fast, less messy and easy too add just that touch of grimness and tonal difference to liven up a model.
![Album image #37 Album image #37](/albums/img/4/9/7/1337497-10501-91-720.jpg)
Sealed it up under a coat of satin and done with the painting and decaling. Almost there!
![Album image #38 Album image #38](/albums/img/4/9/8/1337498-10501-24-720.jpg)
Installing the landing gear
![Album image #39 Album image #39](/albums/img/5/0/0/1337500-10501-86-720.jpg)
Moment of truth, unmasking the cockpit. And what do you know, no disaster underneath!
![Album image #40 Album image #40](/albums/img/4/9/9/1337499-10501-85-720.jpg)
Adding slats and wheel doors. Realized in time I had to modify the inner doors for this s/n, which was an easy fix.
![Album image #41 Album image #41](/albums/img/5/0/1/1337501-10501-77-720.jpg)
Made my own gadget to hold pairs of wheels and file a more perfect flat spot than my earlier unassisted efforts.
![Album image #42 Album image #42](/albums/img/5/0/3/1337503-10501-88-720.jpg)
Adding the final bits and pieces…
![Album image #43 Album image #43](/albums/img/5/0/2/1337502-10501-39-720.jpg)
… and we’re done!

Hi everyone, it has been a while since I posted something here due to other priorities but I'm back to modeling again. This spring I picked a Hasegawa F-100D from my stash to get back into shape again. It was a fairly recent purchase that I picked up second-hand last year because I wanted to add an early silver Hun to my collection and I had the decals for one in my stash. Hope you enjoy the build.

While the Hun is not my cup of tea, this one looks really good and the hard work paid off. Well done Hans!

I think, this is the best build I've ever seen from a Hasegawa Super Sabre in this scale. Excellent work!
