Nice job on the camoflage. Did you mask it or freehand? Airbrush or paintbrush?

Good job on this special topic from a quite bad kit!

Thank you! I masked the camo. The wings are so small, I was able to trace their shape onto a wide piece of masking tape. Then I carefully sketched out the camo pattern from the painting instructions and cut them out with a hobby knife.

You made something really nice out of... not much. I just got this kit for $2.40, I couldn't pass up a model that cheap. Thanks for describing what's in store for me. Did you do anything special to the decals to make them hold up?

One of my favourites. This kit has not had some friendly boxings, but you've done a great job with this one.

@Monte, the decals weren't too bad and didn't require much additional attention. They had an oddly rubbery texture, but they responded to decal solution pretty well. I had to make some compromises to make the rudder decal fit because it is badly out of scale. Someone else on here scanned, resized and reprinted it on blank decal paper for their build, which seems like a good solution. Unfortunately that didn't occur to me as an option when I was working on this!

Album info

I bought the kit on a whim because I liked the box art, and it was an interesting subject. The kit is simple and crude, with poorly fitting parts and rudimentary detail. The canopy was badly molded, devoid of detail and did not fit in the fuselage properly. The decals are thick and rubbery, and the decal for the rudder was badly out of scale. Interestingly, the landing gears are fairly well-engineered and provide nice visual interest.

If I had it to do over, I would probably spend more time correcting and filling gaps. I decided my body work was "good enough" and moved on to the next steps. I was unable to find good references to scribe missing panel lines, and I'd already started painting when I saw, too late, that the back of the box showed more detail that I could have recreated. With no indication of the canopy frame to go on, I was forced to mask it freehand, using reference photos.

There are no internal details other than the included pilot's seat. I scratch-built an instrument panel just to have something inside the cockpit; I stopped short of adding a rear bulkhead, though I probably ought to have done so. Had I planned ahead, I also would have closed up the gaps inside the landing gear bays and added interior detail.

I put on a panel line wash and sealed it with a matte coat. I may come back and weather it later on, but for now I'm calling it done. Though I wouldn't necessarily recommend this kit, it was a fun build.
