Casey BeckettGreat new kit, a few wee issues - scales out darn near perfectly.
Seen several reviews complaining about fin cap shape - it is darn near spot-on. I worked on A-6s for over ten years, know this airframe intimately.
Couple small things I've caught as I contemplate my build -
- Big complaint from many, but not quite correct - some A-6A WERE IN fact retrofitted with MB GRU-7 seats, so this should not be a huge issue - anyone doesn't believe you, get this book - Intruder: The Operational History of Grumman's A-6 by Mark Morgan
- the 'slime lights' on the wing tips and fuselage above and forward of the speed brakes are wrong for an A-6A. A-6A did have a small formation light on the fuselage.
- Pitot tube is far too thick and too long
- 'v' shaped tabs on rear of radome are far too thick, in real life this very thin steel straps
- A-6A had one anti collision beacon on the nose door, not one one each intake belly as the kit has. So; one, not three as the kit has.
- Cockpit got the B/N lower and to the rear of the pilot pretty well.
-Instrument panel as molded would be a great depiction of a KA-6D tanker for starters, as the B/N had very little in front of him.
-Engine face is way too far forward - real aircraft the fan face was almost below the main wing root leading edge.
- Canopy is crystal clear and I think nailed the slight 'bulge' of each side of the canopy.
- several small vents are wrong for the -A, but correct for an -E or Tram model.
I won't complain about ordnance, they do all look pretty sketchy! (Fuel tanks look ok)
Overall, I am very happy to have a new mold, and will be getting the Tram version too

RandoCasey what do you think about the problem with the nose gear doors? I'd really like a 1/72 A-6A but have held back because of that.

Casey BeckettHello Rando! I wasn't aware of any issue with the nose gear doors- mind you mine are still in the box as I haven't started any of them yet - what is the complaint? I have seen anything in the reviews I've read - At a cursory glance they appear to be okay.

RandoApparently it's something with missing parts on the nose gear door. There's another set of comments on this page discussing in detail. I don't know the A-6 super well yet but this review explains it here
"Each main landing gear strut has seven parts plus a one-part wheel. But strangely, the forward main gear doors are missing. They should be opened when the gear is down, and there isn't any indication of the closed doors molded into the fuselage halves." finescale.com/produc..er-plastic-model-kit

Casey BeckettHey Rando- Do you mean the forward main gear doors ? Yeah, they oddly left those out-You can cut them ou/t and make new ones, or leave it and just scribe the lines - my only guess as to why they omitted them is because many display /museum A-6 are out there with those forward main doors closed. Still a better kit than what's out there - Hasegawas are now only useful for spares - (get the doors from an old kt cheap on ebay? ) The Fujimis are fine kits if you haven't built one of them - Italeris are pretty good too. -
If you get a Hasegawa, make sure its a boxing after 1987 - some improved parts in those.

RandoThanks Casey great advice, I'm not one to shy away from cutting and grafting parts so I'll definitely consider it. I was considering getting a Fujimi at one point. Maybe I'll give the trumpeter a chance tho. I love all Navy from the 60s-70s era and I'm slowly learning all the details about them. I'm "getting" into the F-4 right now and the A-4 somewhat. The A-6 is a really remarkable and kind of underappreciated I find, definitely want to give it and its EW versions a few builds. The Hobby Boss 1/48 is high on my wish list, I hear it's the best in that scale

RandoTotally agree. I'm building an SEA plane or two in my future but they're all so similar. I've been eyeballing Navy F-4 schemes, especially like the VF-161 Chargers with the black back and red lightning bolt on the tail. Lately I've been all about my Crusaders, with Sword and CAT4 opening up so many options it's hard to want to do anything else.

The drop tanks used on the Mig you are building are the original (older) version. They were attached directly to the wing (no hinge) and did not have stabilizing ailerons on the end. This type of tanks had one unpleasant feature. When dropping the empty tank, the tank rolled on the wing. This was annoying because it could damage the control surfaces. Therefore, these tanks were replaced by a new type with stabilizing surfaces at the end of the tank and these tanks were suspended on a wing hanger (tanks of this type are in the kit). This solution eliminated the rolling problem.

Ben MLudvik, thank you for the details. I did not know that. I imagine they usually did not drop the tanks on trainers.
I also masked the canopy last night. The molding of the frames are a bit vague and lots of curves so it will require some cleanup after painting.

Ludvík KružíkBen, you're right that trainer planes didn't usually drop tanks. In peacetime, in normal use, even combat aircraft don't drop tanks (except in emergency situations or exercises).
The purpose of my comment was merely to explain why the tanks on Indonesian aircraft differ from those in the kit.
I look forward to following your progress and wish you a lot of fun building the model and the result to your liking.

Ben MWell the other night I got frustrated with the Vallejo gloss black primer clogging my airbrush, so I added some Mr leveling thinner and gave it the worst orange peel ever as this is totally incompatible with the paint. I thought I could selectively strip the paint with windex but while that kind of stripped the paint it also dissolved a lot of the perfect plastic putty and also dissolved the canopy pva glue and masking. Also I broke off a wing and a horizontal stabilizer. So a bit of a setback.
I have constant problems getting the Vallejo gloss black primer to not clog my 0.4mm nozzle.

Duster_dIt's sad, Ben. These Vallejo primers can only be diluted with distilled water because they are based on acrylic urethane (this is my IMHO). Even Vallejo's Thinner and Flow Improver for acrylic paints does not go well with these primers. The same applies to their polyurethane varnishes.

Sy BarWow that video seam to show it's a lot of hard work to get their primer coat working 👀
I'd go with mr surfacer 1500 approx 50:50 with mr levelling thinner, then if you need a gloss use mr Color gx110 again 50:50 with levelling thinner, sounds just as complex but I've never had this block airbrush and you can get rid of surface issue before you gloss saving the thicker gloss primer obscuring details..

Ben MPainted some detail parts. Unlike the Vallejo primer, the metallics shoot like a dream. Started reassembly. I will have to re-putty and this kit needs a lot of putty. The canopy is a goopy fogged mess, I'm going to soak it in degreaser to hopefully strip off the future and start over on it.

Ben MI finally broke the pitot tube off, amazing it stayed on this long with all the handling I had to do. The second time I did the puttying I didn't sand things as smooth, live and learn. This kit has a lot of challenging fit issues. I think I will decal next. Fairly happy with the canopy, it was a bear to mask. The gun blast panel and air brakes came out nice, slight contrast with the rest of the nmf.

Have you considered subtle colour differentiation of the individual panels? It'll brighten up the uniform silver surface of the aircraft nicely.

Ben MThere are a few panels painted a different color and some light weathering, but I'm keeping it subtle on this one as my photographic references don't show a lot of variation other than the gun blast panel and air brakes. I'll take some better pictures when it's done. I've done the full on panel painting before and I enjoy doing that!

coporadoBuild completed so far. Still waiting for the metal barrel. Quite challenging to attach the Zimmerit- PE parts. Was annoying when it comes to round shapes on the turret front armor. Treating those metal parts with some heat, made them much more handy to shape. First time using Friul tracks, very time consuming, but the best track result I´ve seen so far 🙂

coporadoThe tank received several rounds of paint. Starting with red brown primer, followed by dark yellow as base color and finally the camo pattern. Next is detail painting, and weathering.

The exhaust was painted in a medium grey first. The parts having armor plates underneath were left in the original painting, as these area is less affected by heat and corrosion. Then a warm white followed by a reddish brown was applied using the sponge technique. Next was rust tones painted and blended with enamels. Colors of the original camo scheme where then applied with a sponge in the areas with less corrosion, to turn out the different stages of heat impact. Finally the upper parts received a slightly black shade to simulate the exhaust fume grime.

coporadoKick off for the base. Styrofoam is the desired material for house, road and pavement. As the road and pavement is covered with lots of dirt and debris, I added cobblestone only randomly. For the road thin sheets of styrofoam were shaped using a 3D printed rolling pin. In order to create more texture the stones were carved with a pencil. For the pavement an old brush was used to shape the small stones. Everything was painted in several greyish, brownish, sandy tones with acrylics.
The shape of house was cut with the Proxxon hot wire. To make the facade more interesting I added some "decoration" around the upper windows. A border seperates the upper and lower floor. Next is closing the gaps between the decoration elements at the upper windows and cover the lower floor with wood.

coporadoSlowly taking shape. Lower floor fassade updated with some wooden panels. Dirt and debris was added to the road and pavement and painted with the airbrush. I used the same colors I used for weathering the tank tracks. Next is windows and door installation and of course detailing the interior.

coporadoLower and upper floor and walls were detailed using Balsa wood and wallpaper. Added windows using Balsa and lasercut as well as some transparent plastic for the glas parts. Also the infantry miniatures arrived meanwhile.

coporadoScratch built some interior from balsa wood and plastic residues. The attic floor was installed. Next is finally building the lower floor entrance and preparing the roof.
