BTR-70 Afghanistan
Starting with some PE on the hull bottom and building the suspension.
To me, the hinges on all the hatches and doors look TERRIBLE! They are the wrong style, too tall, and show gaps. They must be re-done... 🙁
Here are the side doors. Gaps are filled with plastic sheet...
The side doors look like they should sit lower on the frame. To do that, I have to fill near the top of the door, to avoid a gap later.
Making hinges out of plastic sheet and rod.
The finished side doors are installed. 🙂
Now to fix the hinges on the hatches.
Again, using plastic sheet and rod.
Copper wire is used for the hinge spring.
The top-front hatches are done. 🙂
Re-worked top hatches and rear top panel.
Working on rear engine panel to accomodate photoetch parts.
Added some home-made tow cables.
The base coat of paint cleans things up alot!
Second color base coat applied (Gull Gray)
It always amazes me how much detail a wash brings out. Haven't even dry-brushed yet...
Finished!

Thanks Fabian 🙂 I was waiting for the Trumpeter kit, but found this on sale at a great price ($11). Maybe it wasn't that great... 🙁

Nice sanding job.😉 Good to see you have added some Afganistan Accsessories. Was the gun ontop of the turret included?

Thanks Fabian. Yes the gun on top of the turret is an AGS-17 grenade launcher and was include with the kit. 🙂 It comes with a belt of shells, but I can't find any photos of it with the shells so I haven't used them yet. 🙁

Yes, I do apologise for not commenting on your build in my first reply George. But I will now and, I am also most impressed with all you have done here mate, as the 'tone' comes across well. Cheers mate 🙂

Photographs of the real thing that are then photoshopped to make them look like a model is not fair mate. !!! LOL 🙂 🙂 🙂
:-0What a stunner George, and just perfect in every way from what you have presented here. I am most impressed, like everyone else mate. 🙂

Well, I guess there is not much more what the Trumpeter kit can offer in terms of exterior detail, which you haven´t included in your build. Splendid work here. 👍
But what amazes me most is your ability to turn a "boring" (meaning not modulated) paintjob into such a great looking model...

Thanks Fabian! 🙂 I tried modulation a couple of times but must not have done it right, because I didn't see much difference (maybe I was too heavy with the next layer of paint). It seemed like I got the results I wanted with just "washes" and "filters" (which is kind of like modulation, but on top of the basecoat). However, I do want to try "hairspray" chipping!😉

Thanks Gerald and Aghis! 🙂 Aghis, the tires are a problem because they are vinyl and have several ejector pin holes on one side. Normally, you could just mount the tires with the holes facing in. But, if you want to align the tire-tread correctly, one side (the right) will have the holes showing. 🙁 I filled the holes with a slurry of super-glue mixed with corn starch. Then had to file and sand them smooth (it was a hard job because the vinyl doesn't sand well). I was happily surprised to find the tires looked perfect after I covered the sanding scars with acrylic flat-black paint! 🙂 I brushed on a sand colored enamel wash and finished with dust using an air-brush.
