Work in progress

Album image #1
The cockpit is finally done, after alot of work with the tiny pe-parts provided by eduard in this kit.

Album image #2
I'm thinking about removing the clear plastic from the gunsight and instead add some thin clear plastic sheet. Need to get some weight into the nose. Sadly there are no lead weights in this kit.

Album image #3
Closed the wheel bay with a sheet of plastic and added 2x4g dropshot lead weight. Also used the clear plastic sheet on the gunsight.

Album image #4
Fitted the fuselage together and did some sanding. Fit is okay, if you take some time to dry-fit. Added 2g more weight in the nose before closing it.

Album image #5
Started out with black primer, which pointed out alot of spots i have to sand or do some more sanding on. Here you notice this is one of the older Eduard kits.

Album image #6
Started out with painting the underside. It will need a layer of thinned neutral grey to blend everything together and then it´s off to the upper side...

Album image #7
Trying to achieve weathered olive drab...

Album image #8
Done with the upper side...

Album image #9
...and with the lower side.

Album image #10
Quite happy with the results so far.

Album image #11
Different lightning really gives a different effect on the camera.

Album image #12
Especially on the fabric covered rudders, the olive drab bleached out fast on Guadalcanal.

Album image #13
Small progress on the wings.

Album image #14
Here the modulation can be seen a bit better. I think i need a camera with a macro function.

Album image #15
Masking the fuselage band was not easy and the result is not correct, concerning the angle. Thinking about redoing it. :\

Album image #16
Redid the entire fuselage band, which took me some time.

Album image #17
A first layer of gloss varnish to prepare the surface for the decals.

Album image #18
Applied the decals and i must say those are the best i ever worked with. I´m very happy how the decals fit to the paintjob.

Album image #19
Anyone have a tutorial on how to do nice exhaust stains? I`m a bit nervous about ruining the paintjob with them. 🙂

Album image #20
Exhaust stains done!

Finished today. Due to bad weather, i couldn´t take better pictures.

Might do some better pictures some day soon.

Thank you guys. Managed to assemble the wings to the fuselage today, so after some sanding i will probably prime it black tomorrow and start with the paintjob.

Thanks, hard to capture it on camera tough. It looks a bit different in real life. I really look forward to how it turns out when i add the white stripe around the rear part of the fuselage, the black stripes on the wings and roundels. Not to mention the bright blue nose and decals. 🙂

Nice work David.
What especially did you make with the upper side to let it look weathered?

Thanks Sören! I started out with black primer, then added mottling with vellejo air 71.016. Then i mottled some panels with 71.043 and/or with 71.044. Some more, some less. The panels that would be exposed more to sunshine got more 71.044. The rudders got the most 71.044, since they were covered in fabric and the olive drab bleached out there the most. Then i used a nearly black green to go along some of the panel lines. I then used very thinned 71.043 to go over all areas again, however i didn´t use the same amount on each panel. Less on the areas i didn´t want to be that worn out.

Thanks James! I was really unsure how i was going to tackle the green upper side. The Eduard instruction pictured it in a really light grey green, naming the color olive drab tough. Which is called brown-violett or rlm81 on the vallejo air bottle. And then i started to research what color this plane probably was in. Since i found nothing about this plane, i started to research on olive drab on P-39's and that´s a topic, that you can seem to spend an entire academic carreer on. So in the end, it´s probably more of an artistic take on the subject. However so far it´s been fun painting it. 🙂

Really good paintjob David. For fuselage bands and stripes I always use "Tamiya tape for curves", really ideal stuff. Very flexible tape and does not effect the paint whatsoever. But, having said that, you still have to mask it yourself so errors can occur 😄

Hi Erik, thank you for your kind words and the hint. I got the tamiya tape for curves some time ago after some fuselage bands on the bf109's i did a long time ago. Way better than with normal masking tape, however as you said... you still have to mark it for yourself. 😄

Superb work on the shading there! 👍👍👍

Thank you very much Burkhard! Really nervous about doing the exhaust stains next. Not sure if i should use airbrush, pigments or oil paint. Afraid to ruin the paintjob. So i guess today i will do the wheel's and prop instead. 😛

You should airbrush it!

I was nervous the first time. I started with Tamiya buff and gradually added brown and black getting darker and narrowing the stain with each mix. (Have a look at my bf-109)

Worked out fine airbrushing the stains. I used vallejo air nato black, which i thinned alot for the first streak and then added some white to the mix, so i got thinned white-grey.

I like it!

But scary though isn't it!

Thank you guys! Yeah, it really is scary to apply them.

Lots of assembly work today and stains on the guns. Need to glue the prop and two wheels to it and then go for matt varnish. Might finish it today!

Done. Much i would do different on the next build. Mainly working on a cleaner build (you can see gaps on the doors) and add around 1-2g more nose weight. It just barely isn´t a tail sitter. But I'm happy with the result, since i can see some improvement since the Wildcatfish. Now I'm thinking what to build next... 🙂
