Revell's late P-47D
Revell's kit parts. I will only need a few parts to update the Academy kit.
Revell cockpit floor. I will need this part.
The revell cockpit sidewall very poor details, the Academy kit is much better.
Revell P-47D sidewall details very poor.
Revell lower wing section. I will refer to this to upgrade the Academy wing.
Here are the Revell parts that I will use to update the Academy kit.
Kit cockpit. In the end I just scratch built the cockpit floor and did not us the Revell kit cockpit floor. One of the main differences in late model P-47D was a flat cockpit floor.
Added cockpit floor details.
Kit sidewall details.
I added some more sidewall details. With only a few cents of Evergreen Styrene.

Remove kit wing guns
I drilled new holes for brass tubing

Added wheel well details
I removed the kit ID lights and added new ones
New ID lights
I will use the Revell wing as a reference (top) to update the Academy wing
Updated Academy wing. Note I added the compressibility flap to each wing. The flap does set a little proud on the wing, also I filled in the kit landing light and added a new landing light out board.
Improved kit wings
Kit wing
Improved kit wing. I added the wing missing flap hings
Fuselage and wings
To update the Academy kit using the fuselage fillet from the Revell kit. The fillet is one thing that distinguish the late P-47D
The fillet fit was not great, a little filling and sanding was needed.
Fuselage fillet
I did some rescribing of some panel lines. I think the Squadron's scribing tool is the best I have used. It's simple and cheap for around ten dollars US.

I am starting a new P-47 project. It will be an P-47D Bubble Top from the 79th FG in Italy 1945. The P-47D OX1 is a late model P-47. I have no War time photos of this aircraft to compare with the art work. This aircraft features nose art from a well know war time artist Alberto Vargas. Vargas pinup nose art were on several WW2 aircraft. Vargas is also know for is work in Playboy in the 1960's and 1970's. I will use the Academy P-47D Bubble Top Kit. I like the Academy kit better than the Revell kit. Just need to steal a few parts from Revell's P-47D kit to upgrade the Academy kit to a late model P-47D. Much of the same detail work that I did on my Miss Mary Lou project will apply here.
