2F-Adversaries: Latin American States (1991-2001)
This collection covers military equipment used by Latin American nations to take hostile action against US military and civilians during my time in service.
In general, the formal governments of Latin American countries involved in the War on Drugs cooperated with US drug interdiction efforts. However, there were notable exceptions when interceptors challenged US aircraft operating in sovereign airspace.
- F-16A Fighting Falcon (Venezuelan Air Force)
- Kfir C2 (Columbian Air Force)
- Mirage F.1JE (Ecuadorian Air Force)
- Su-22M Fitter-J (Peruvian Air Force)
In 1996, Cuba shot down two civilian Cessna 337 aircraft over international waters near Cuba. Cuba claimed the civilian aircraft were sponsored by the US military and that they had the right to destroy the aircraft because they had previously flown over Cuban airspace to drop leaflets. The incident prompted US President Clinton to declare a state of national emergency and took measures to protect US aircraft from further Cuban aggression.
- MiG-23UB Flogger-C (Cuban Air Force)
- MiG-29UB Fulcrum-B (Cuban Air Force)
