Takom 1:35 DF-17/DF-ZF (CH-SS-22)

Here's the latest kit I've completed, a 1/35th scale Dongfeng-17 (DF-17) from Takom. The DF-17, whose direct translation means 'East Wind', is a solid-fuel, medium-range ballistic missile and is designed to carry the DF-ZF hypersonic glide vehicle (also included in the kit). The DF-17 is stated to have a range of approximately 2000 kilometers (or 1080 Nautical Miles)

The kit itself was very simple to put together, consisting of a very modest 13 parts. Seams are prevalent on the model, with some very noticeable seams running the length of the missile body on either side and another seam running the circumference of the transition piece between the booster of the DF-17 and the DF-ZF HGV. However, these seams were easily filled and sanded, as there are basically no details that will be lost during the sanding process.

The model itself was painted using Vallejo Game Color paints and color modulation was used to add visual interest. A word of caution on the decals, they are quite thick and difficult to work with (not wanting to conform to the surface, silvering even with a gloss coat, etc). Modelers wishing to build this kit would benefit greatly from remaking the decals themselves with a much thinner transfer film. Other than decal issues, the kit went together well!
