Slow progress over the past weeks, but I now managed to finalize most of the airframe and rescribe the typical panel lines on the rear fuselage upper and lower spine.

Thanks for the kind comment Lukasz, I appreciate it greatly. 👍
I'm not certain why there are British fin flashes, I followed the decal guide provided with the kit. Perhaps someone else knows?
The plane denoted was "Desert Warrior" crewed by Captain Ralph Lower, Pilot Officer Anthony Arthur Martin (RCAF), Sgt. John R Dawdy, Sgt. J.B. Saragalo, Lt. Floyd R. Pond, Lt. T.R. Tate, Lt. W.O. Seaman, 81st Bombardment Squadron (Medium), 12th Bombardment Group (Medium), Boiling Field, Washington DC, July 1943.
Capt Lower completed his 52nd mission and then with "Desert Warrior" flew back to the US with the above crew for a tour of the US. The art work was done prior to heading off to the US for the tour, one of the artists was a RAF Cpl.

Hello Guy, I know my comment is a little bit late but here goes. USAAF aircraft flying in the North African theatre often flew with British formations as part of their joint operations. The British fin flashes were an additional form of identification. Also, a lot of the aircraft operated by the USAAF in North Africa, had originally been given to the British as part of the Lend Lease agreement. So those aircraft were painted in RAF camouflage and markings etc. When the Americans got those aircraft, the only things overpainted were the roundels and squadron codes. So the camouflage and fin flashes remained.

Finally regarded as complete. My first attempt at a 4 engined bomber and my first attempt at rigging (aerial wires).
The aircraft denoted here is from 1943. PH-H (LM321) was the Squadron marking of 12 Sqn RAF. LM321 flew with a number of Squadrons including 460, 550 and 100. It was finally lost on the night of 10/11 June 1944 over Acheres.
Two pilots that flew in PH-H with 12 Squadron were Flight Leader Sqn Ldr FS Knight and Pilot Officer Thomas Forbes.
Thomas Forbes flew PH-H on 22 June 1943 on an operation to Mulheim whilst serving with 12 Sqn C Flight. Plt Offr Forbes was killed in action on an operation to Turin on 12 July 1943.
C Flight leader Sqn Ldr Knight and his crew failed to return from an operation to Cologne on 28 June 1943. Four are buried in Dutch cemeteries and three are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. Their average age was 23.

Welcome @Alec and @Edward! Both cockpits are finished and fuselage half are going to be put together now. I just took a few closeups - D-20 is OOB and D-5 is made from Eduard resin print. I bought the cockpit print and the kit at the same time and after finishing both there pros and cons on each, but I would not spend extra money for that - the kit cockpit is very highly detailed. What is your opinion? BTW - I saw some cotton bud fibers in the pics now - that will be cleaned up ... in this sale it´s so hard to see that with the naked eyes ... Looking forward to your feedback. Thanks all

Your seats with belts looks good - I wonder why Eduard sells now 3D printed seats with seat belts on the seat?! Makes the paint job complicated 🙁

thanks @bughunter - the side panels on the D-5 are also from the resin print set. In 1/72 and 1/48 I like using PE seat belts. In bigger scales they are too flat. Thanks for sharing this - I didn't know that they offer this now - I agree with you that I don't see any benefit on this. That is interesting, indeed.

If available for a type I prefer HGW belts. Eduard is at least involved with providing the metal parts for the sets.

I think the printed seat belts are more realistic looking, despite drawbacks with painting. This works well in 1/72. Steel is just too rigid, plus they flake on me sometimes.

Thomas, I have not. I should qualify my statement: I think they look more realistically shaped (twists and bends) than what can be done with Eduard PE or steel belts. How well one can paint the 3D printed ones remains, for me, to be seen.

@Jakub: many thanks for your nice feedback - appreciate it a lot! @Alec: I thought you might have done a printed seat - no worries and I hope you didn't get this wrong .. I'm really interested in how a seat with printed belts looks like. I think in 1/48 and bigger it can be nice, but 1/72 would be really tough to paint.

I build the Tamiya one, but Eduard doesn't have to fear the comparison. You brought all those details nicely to effect with your paint job. Anxious for more.

@Micheal: don't make me blushing .... @Alec: well, good question and I have to say I didn't apply any wash on the panels. What I did was black primer and a real heavy dry brush with white or off-white. And then I sprayed a thin layer of interior green in 90° to the panels to get a kind of base coloring. Final layers were then applied from a smaller angle (almost 90° to the wings just to explain). With this technique the shadows created them by themselves. I then used very little amount of black panel liner to pop out the smallest details. Let me know if I could explain understandable ... not en English native 😝

Welcome Alec - any time ☺️ if I do dry brush after painting main color I would match the color. If you do it directly on black primer you have the highest contrast and you are able to blend with main color until it's just enough visible to pop the edges a bit. So can create a bit of depth at least this was my idea 🤷♂️

You achieved a nice 3D-effect with this technique. Maybe you wanna try to spray pure highly diluted plain white from your imaginary light source afte the black primer. On top of that come light coats of the base color. This gives you highlights and shadows in a pretty natural way. I like it with figures and cockpits.

@Michael: thanks - I used this technique one the figure I made for my Fw190 vignette, but I haven't thought on this on a cockpit. In my opinion this technique probably does not pop the edges as much as dry brush done before spraying the main color. Maybe a combination is good in bigger scales ... I will think of it on my next builds. @Alec: welcome and thanks for your positive feedback ☺️

many thanks @Rui! appreciate your kind feedback. I was able to work a bit on the the D-5 and I want to share a quick update on one of the two P-51´s. I decided to give the D5 open engine cowlings and gun bays as Eduard released the prints recently. The engine is only dry fitted and only shows the main components no. In total you can see an assembly of about 10 components. I´m really impressed by the quality of the prints

Many thanks @Martin and @Dave! Appreciate your nice words! @Dave: I am sorry ... the kit gives so much detail, it´s not a big deal to make something acceptable out of it. If you go for it or any aftermarket: think about the 3D print cockpit - as you can see in the older pics in this album I do a D-20 OOB at the same time. In my opinion the 3D printed cockpit is not a must, the sprues provide more than enough details. The engine + engine bearer surprised me a lot with superb fit, clever part separation and a flawless assembly.

thanks @Alec! I´m not a native English speaker so I asked to get it right! Indeed the superb engineering from eduard combined with the new direct 3D printing technology makes it way more easier for us modellers. Absolutely no doubt about that! Even if you would say, that it´s just a bit of paint on some printed parts I would be fine with that. I probably would not agree, knowing that I used roughly 0.5m of lead wire and glued all in place without messing up the section with CA glue - but that´s a different story 😆 Everyone should be allowed to share his thoughts and we should be glad about that. Thanks again for any feedback - happy modelling!

Hi Przemek,
Now I got your LVSR parts, and I'm not sure what do do with the drive shafts parts?
emp3d.eu/en_US/p/LVS..ft-4-pieces-135/5752
You mention in the link above the drive shaft parts should replace the F10 parts from the kit.
The F10 part is needed 8 times in the suspension, but there are only 4 drive shaft parts in your kit?

Thomas, Part F10 is needed 4 times according to the manual. 2 parts in step 3 and another 2 in step 6 (which i wrongly labeled as E1). All other drive shafts are E1 parts (2 in step 1 + 1 in step 2 plus 2 in step 4 and 1 in step 5 -- total 6 parts E1)

You are right, I had another look at the instructions, and it was the comment "Make Two" which confused me. F10 and your replacement drive shaft is indeed needed four times in total. Thanks for the clarification.

The photo etch is really fun for vehicles if one is a little careful (maybe less so for ships, because of the amount of PE, heh.
I found out my way of modeling is parallel modeling, and I bought some big plastic trays to try keep all the kit parts together, also using small plastic bags so the smaller parts doesn't vanish so easily.

Thanks Treehugger. I think that is the way to go. Do 2 or 3 projects at a time. Then you don't get burn out on one. I currently have 3 on the go. This, Tamiya's 1/32 Spitfire, and Zvesda Dreamliner. Spitfire & Dreamliner have been put on the back burner. I think I will start a new project soon too. Think I will make a start on the AFV Club Stryker next.

when pictures are taken, digital cameras add EXIF data, like camera model, setup of the foto, etc.... and also if the camera was rotated to take the picture. software to view the images, takes the information, and automatically rotates the images. but when uploaded to SCM there is no autorotation.... so that is why you need to fo it yourself, even if "they look fine in my computer". unless I am totally wrong of course 🙂

are you sure those are not normal water slide decals? I say so because they seem to have a carrier film, and when I check the produc page of the kit, it say that it contains water slide decals.... they certainly look quite yellowed (no wonder with their age) but that sometimes can be resolved placing then in a window to get the sun to white them a bit.

Hey Felix, a very promising start. Unfortunately I can't give you any tips on the interior color, I only know that with American aircraft it sometimes depends on the factory, as the same type was painted differently in different factories.

Great work, can I ask how you went about the weighting? I tried lots of small lead fishing weights with my Airfix Mitchell but ended up having to fill not only the tiny area given but also the room, behind and just below the cockpit, also behind the control panel and part of the room just behind the cockpit, every space I could find. I'm new to building American bombers, all the RAF ones sit on their tail wheel. Do you or any of the people who have commented have any better ideas than lead? I'm really looking forwards to seeing this project develop (especially as I have the kit myself and need all the tips I can get). Thanks Richard. Following.

Dear Boywellum
Both the Mitchell and the Liberator require lots of weight. I bought liquid gravity but it's not heavy enough for the space provided. But there is an ladder for the entry door which will serve as a stand. So i have to go with that!

Thanks Felix, that is very kind of you, these kits must have been designed with something in mind for them to work with the actual spaces provided but I have never found a definitive answer anywhere. If any other of the contibutors to your most excellent post have any ideas that would be much appreciated. Maybe Airfix expect us to mix some concrete and pour that in 😉 Cheers Felix, BW

Great progres. 👍
Years ago I build the old Revell /Monogram Liberator in 1/48. I decided to glue some lead at the rear side of the engine firewalls. It helped, but wasn't enoght (I forgot the lead at the nose wheel bay).

@Nicolas, that must have been a big bird! I struggle to put this 1/72 Liberator into the paintbooth 🙂
I am glad this kit provides a ladder as support. I bought liquid weight for this build but it's not as compact as i hoped it would be and wouldn't do the job with the spaces provided.

Hi Felix,
I usually use fishing weights, the lead is more dense and has high specific weight. I fill all available space and fix it with PVA glue.
There are also aftermaket sets for the front interior, casted in white metal and intended to replace the plastic part:
B-24 Liberator Landing Gear ..aft Conversions 72009, 1:72)
This one however is designed for Hasegawa kit and most likely won't fit on Airfix one.
If non of this helps, I add more weight in front of the engine bays. This worked for me on my both Mitchell and He-219 (which btw is notorious tail-sitter kit).

Cool! Please be careful with the wiping, let the base seat color dry properly. Use Tamiya acrylics for base color (lacquers will probably work too) Also, do not use flat, at least semigloss or gloss for the base paint so the stitch paint will be easier to wipe off. Use waterbased paints for the stitches (Vallejo, etc) wipe of IMMEDIATELY with water and if necessary a bit of the same brands cleaner.

That is so cool 👍 Could you probably explain in a few words how you did the illumination? Is it some kind of a kit, do I need an electronics degree for it or is it easily applicable? What kind of PCB is the one you are using? Anyhow hats off, that looks amazing!

Thank you Alexander. These lights are not as complicated as they seem and don't require specialized electrical backgroud. I bought some LEDs with dimensions of 0.6mm x 0.3mm and in different colors, 3 volts. So, all that's needed is to connect a battery and a switch.
The PCB board is a multi-switcher, enabling me to control those lights with a remote controller. Additionally, I plan to use soft filaments for the flame part. Different colors and different lengths also available in the market.

@Alexander,
I bought my remote switch from a local store. But similar one available in amazon or ebay. Below one has 4 channels, DC 3 - 24 V voltage range, should be good.
amazon.com/dp/B09P89RF8R/
You could also search if this is available in your local store, key word is "RF433". If the LED light is too bright, you could connect some resistance in series. 10KΩ is ok for those LEDs.

@CaptGPF, the flames are included in the kits. I just painted them and put the filaments inside.
@Alexander, I tried your suggestion, seems I overestimated my skill😜 The stitches are really difficult to be a straight line. Finally I brought a decal (dot line decal) for these stitches. Anyway, I'm still really grateful for your instruction. I need to practice more.

Do you jave some programming experiences? If yes ,i can recommend you the small microcontrollerboards with esp32 or esp82 chip. With some programcode, you can control your models over wifi from from a web-interface on your tablet, handy or pc 😉

That is a very good job you're doing on that old kit 🙂 Though I am wondering why you're bothering to correct the Tamiya kit when the Asuka and Meng M4A3E2 kits would be much less work? Oh, also: the machine gun in photo 80 is an M2 HB, not an M1919 🙂

Greetings! Here are some pics of my new build. Skating back into the post-WW II period, it's the first Soviet supersonic fighter, the MiG-19. The original KP had this aircraft in their lineup back when and it was the first kit I have completed fully by myself as a wee lad. I was actually home "sick" from school for a week recovering from chicken pocks. Instead of heling myself appropriately in bed, I modeled illicitly at the kitchen table as soon as my parents left for work. Ahhh, what a glorious week…
The kit is the much-reviled 2019 "new tool" from KPs "traditional manufacturer" (or usurper, depending on where one stands in this ongoing mud-slinging match). It's a short-run technology kit, so "traditional" in that sense but really a bit old-school for today's pampered modeler. In the "modern" era, Trumpeter had it in their catalog in 2008 but it was never released. Clear Prop has been working on it last few years but the events in Ukraine clearly impacted its release. Rather than wait for a better offering, I decided to go for it and build the KP's kit with few PE and resin bits thrown in. Hope you enjoy!

Excellent start Alec, and great choice of aircraft type. As a kid I loved the box art on the old box from Kovozávody. I built this new KP and I know that it is not exactly a top kit. But it probably doesn't matter to you, almost everything will be scratchbuild anyway 😄

Łukasz, this kit can be built nicely OOB, as demonstrated very recently by a modeler here accomplishing this in 10 days (something I am not capable of…). Building the OG Kovozavody is another matter 😄
Jakube, I agree regarding the box art. Velc just knows his stuff! The cover of this kit is pretty good as well imho. Thanks for the reminder about your build, forgot about it (including it here for reference). Cheers!

Welcome aboard! I made some sloooow progress and uploaded new pics.
@Marius: I am endeavoring to keep the slaughter to the barest minimum 🙂
@Woit: I must say that at the time of building the KP version of this bird, I was still a child in the firm embrace of the Czechoslovak socialist motherland. It would be fun to know how many of those kits were made in the West pre-89 🙂 (there were modelers that exchanged kits across the curtain, so some probably were).

Thanks Cuajete 🙂
Frank, the stacked saw blades worked ok, but one must saw slowly as they tend to spread, so instead of a nice wide channel, one has three adjacent grooves...
The mill is a Microlux item made for MicroMark, a US hobby supplier with long tradition. It's a nice hobby-grade mill that fills my needs, but "precise" is not a label I would put next to it. Everything is a bit on a wobbly side, and the chuck runout for bits under ,5mm is significant (not sure if a better chuck would fix this). But, for the price, a fair buy imho.

Thanks Alec! Your nice labeling description can also be used for my Proxxon! At least yours looks more robust and precise. But yes, the _look_ do not mill anything. This is where the true quality comes out.

Oh no, you've not been tasked with 'useful work'? 😮
You're non-modelling self needs to be made aware you have an audience to entertain and inform, by creating something worthy of (almost) being considered useful work in itself.
PS. If she falls for it, let me know your technique and I'll try it myself. 🙂

Just a hint, the cannons in the wings are not symmetrically positioned (left-right) in the kit. With other words, the kit's wings are not entirely symmetric (which is wrong). Make sure you do install the guns symmetrically yourself, just in case you followed the gun positions the kit is suggesting. Better sand away completely those gun fairings moulded in the wings and redo the guns. It becomes quite obvious only at the very end when you also install the muzzels, since they are so close to the fuselage, therefore any deviation will look bad if you'te looking at the model from above (ask me how I know).
Second thought: I remember the horizontal stabilizer was leaving some visible gaps underneath. If you went this far and did those numerous engine air intakes justice, make sure you prepare in advance with more added styrene to fix this new issue. But I might be wrong on this last point.
Third little thing: the kit's air exhaust looks a bit dull (in my view) since it's missing those 3-4 small access panels it had. I regret not scribing them myself for my models, since they bring more drama to a rather "flat" area. They should look cool especially with the metallic finish. I see you already scribed some yourself?

Now I understand your recent comment even more ... this is some crazy project with all this scratch building around. Very excited to see that coming together Alec. Looks very promising 😊

The corresponding US dollar price should be $9.3, which is the pre-sale price on Taobao in China. Pre-sales start around May, and the non-pre-sale price is ¥128, about $17.5. It may be a little more expensive in the United States due to taxes.

I wish I could find this on Temu today 😄, because Temu is imo 99 if not 100% bullshit when it comes to selling scale models. Overpriced, and old, uninteresting models. Some stuff sell at 3-4-5 times the selling price locally. I had to give up Ebay because of how sellers and ebay blamed eachother, unable to prevent double VAT payment. Amazon is typically just too expensive. My bank didn't allow me to buy from this one Hong Kong hobby store anymore. I did find an ok priced Border Models 1:35 Spifire on Temu recently, but I didn't like this particular Border Models kit. Most of this stuff are just kids toys, paper and thin metal models and some cast metal stuff. 99,9% uninteresting to me.
I forgot to add, so many scam sales on eBay (in the past some 2 years ago or so). I had some 10 orders that were apparently just bullshit. Luckily I got my money back, except for the currency conversion fees, that were lost. It is simply not possible to spot a scam seller on eBay now imo. 10 time in just a few months, postal service end up telling me, these kits (individually) were returned to seller. Everything else off eBay arrived normally. I used to warn eBay, by reporting obviosuly scam sales, but eBay turned off my reporting ability after a while it seemed.
I mention this now, because I do see now on eBay, they are selling several kits of this Tiger Model Tiger tank kit.

i bought this on temu for 28 euro and its a great beginners kit i bought it for the decal sheet but the build was surprisingly satisfying and yes mold on tools but with some in deep weathering etc you can give it more dimension to it

Nice deal. I gave them the finger the other day and closed my account, making sure to point out that their scale model kit sellers are apparent scammers, with some kits being sold at x4 x5 time the expected retail price.

I would stamp this kit into the ground and break it up over the builders head. 1/72 kits are better than this garbage

@Cortex - everything? It is NOT a 'class A' model. It is basically a 1/72 model tool expanded to 1/35. Border/Vespid/Flyhawk are better than this kit at 1/72
Molded on tools and very basic detail (No cupola detail and in TWO halves!) linked up road wheels. Fixed suspension - it all makes for an almost 'snap it' kit

@herbert otter - I got those facts from the Modelling News webpage - it is a very simple build for simple beginners or children providing there is an adult present. I am pleased you found the decals easy to build but if I were you I would try to seek some assistance for your kits as they look like they have been made with plasticine and painted with crayons!

A topic which has never changed
SCM Topic: HMS Victory (1765)
From a full kit persective this topic is all about one ship, HMS Victory, there is no other full kit listed here but maybe its a sort of catch all catch all for some aftermarket products.
Do we rename the topic HMS Victory (1765) or do we just leave things as they are.

What I like most, is to see the evolution of your skills. Each new build shows you're getting better and better. Very nice 👍

Such a varied collection it's hard to pick a favourite, but the Ford Escorts caught my eye.
