A6M2 Zero Academy
Sorry for the messy desk, the plane is ready for preshading/black basing. The primer is Mr Mahogany Surfacer 1000.
Here is a test run of the blackbasing on the spoon with a painted hinomaru.
The kit provided masks for the rear of the propeller blades
I painted the red stripes since the instructions didn't mention that there were decals for them, and only showed a paint number for them, so I only found out about that later.
Painted the cowling separately from the body
The cowling wouldn't fit until I sanded away this spot that protruded at the bottom, not sure if I did something wrong.
Test fitting the cowling on the fuselage
Preshading with white and yellow over Mr Mahogany Surfacer. The control surfaces were made brighter as the paint there seemed to fade quicker than the rest of the airframe.
Painted with AK Real Color RC302
I used this DSPIAE MT-EC circle cutter to mask the roundels
Painted the roundels on
The roundels are gloss red, I'll put a satin varnish on the model at the end so it should tone down the shine.
Added all the topside decals
These decals were printed by Academy and were very nice to work with, they went into panel lines even without any decal softener although I used Tamiya Mark Fit Super Strong to make sure they conformed fully.
Test fit of the body with the cowling, I will attach it later as it fits well even without glue.

megagnomeSadly I didn't take more pictures of the cockpit before I closed it up for painting, I should be ready to start painting the plane now.

megagnomeI think I'm done, I wanted to add a panel line wash but I haven't done one in a while, and I couldn't get it to stay in most of the panel lines. The kit was mostly good but was overengineered in places and had some issues like requiring the landing gear to be installed before gluing the wings together, I had to modify them to be able to attach them later. I think next time I will do fewer paint layers to get the preshading to show through more, it's very subtle on the end result.
